But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camels’ hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cats’ hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush. The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing. The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit. - 13 - In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape (风景) painting. Wiliams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Wiliams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist. 21. What is the text mainly about? A. Benjamin’s visit to Philadelphia. B. Williams’ influence on Benjamin. C. The beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist. D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington. 22. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggest? A. The cat would be closely watched. B. The cat would get some medical care. C. Benjamin would leave his home shortly. D. Benjamin would have real brushes soon. 23. What did Pennington do to help Benjamin develop his talent? A. He took him to see painting exhibitions. B. He provided him with painting materials. C. He sent him to a school in Philadelphia. D. He taught him how to make engravings. 24. Williams’ two books helped Benjamin to ________. A. master the use of paints B. appreciate landscape paintings C. get to know other painters D. make up his mind to be a painter B When Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955, in San Francisco, California, his unmarried mother decided to put him for adoption because she wanted a girl. So in the middle of the night, his mother called a lawyer named Paul Jobs and said, “We - 13 - have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” But his mother told his future parents to promise that they would send Jobs to college. After Steve Jobs graduated from high school, he went to college but decided to drop out because it was so expensive that he had to sleep on the floor in his friends’ rooms. At 20, he and a friend(Steve Wozniak) started a company in a garage on April 1, 1976. Jobs named their company --- Apple in memory of a happy summer he had spent at an orchard (果园) in Oregon. After 10 years of hard time and failures, starting from two kids working in a garage, Apple computer eventually grew into a big company with over 4000 employees. At 30, Jobs, however, was fired from the company he co-founded. But after he had to leave the company, Apple was under heavy pressure from rival (对手) Microsoft and in 1996 posted billions of dollars in losses. Apple needed Steve Jobs and he was appointed as Apple’s CEO in 1997. Under his leadership, Apple returned to profitability and introduced new products such as the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad. Steve Jobs once said, “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick, Don’t lose faith. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find what you love. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.” 25. Steve Jobs didn’t finish his college education because he _______. A. wanted to start a company. B. had financial problems. C. took no interest in his major. D. hated to share rooms with his friends. 26. It can be inferred that Apple _______. A. was founded in Oregon B. developed from a garage C. had a difficult beginning D. had a successful beginning 27. What can we learn from what Steve Jobs said? A. Interest is the key to success. B. Hope helps us succeed. C. Attitude is everything. D. Courage goes with confidence. C In ancient Egypt, a shopkeeper discovered that he could attract customers to his - 13 - shop simply by making changes to its environment. Modern businesses have been following his lead, with more tactics (策略). One tactic involves where to display the goods. Foe example, stores place fruits and vegetables in the first section. They know that customers who buy the healthy food first will feel happy so that they will buy more junk food later in their trip. In department stores, the women’s shoe section is generally next to the women’s cosmetics (化妆品) section:while the shop assistant is going back to find the right size shoe, bored customers are likely to wander over and find some cosmetics they might want to try later. Besides, businesses seek to appeal to customers’ senses. Stores notice that the smell of baked goods encourages shopping, so they make their own bread each morning and then fan the bread smell into the store throughout the day. Music sells goods, too. Researchers in Britain found that when French music was played, sales of French wine went up. When it comes to the selling of houses, businesses also use highly rewarding tactics. They find that customers make decisions in the first few seconds upon walking in the door, and turn it into a business opportunity. A California builder designed the structure of its houses smartly. When entering the house, the customer would see the Pacific Ocean through the windows, and then the pool through an open stairway leading to the lower level. The instant view of water on both levels helped sell these $10 million houses. 28. Why do stores usually display fruits and vegetables in the first section? A. To save customers time. B. To show they are high quality foods. C. To help sell junk food. D. To sell them at discount prices. 29. According to Paragraph 3, which of the following encourages customers to buy? A. Opening the store early in the morning. B. Displaying British wines next to French ones. C. Inviting customers to play music. D. Filling the store with the smell of fresh bread. 30. What is the California builder’s story intended to prove? - 13 - A. The house structure is a key factor customers consider. B. The more costly the house is, the better it sells. C. An ocean view is much to the customers’ taste. D. A good first impression increases sales. 31. What is the main purpose of the passage? A. To explain how businesses turn people into their customers. B. To introduces how businesses have grown from the past. C. To report researches on customer behavior. D. To show dishonest business practices. D Grown-ups are often surprised by how well they remember something they learned as children but have never practiced ever since. A man who has not had a chance to go swimming for years can still swim as well as ever when he gets back in the water. He can get on a bicycle after many years and still ride away. He can play catch and hit a ball as well as his son. A mother who has not thought about the words for years can teach her daughter the poem that begins “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” or remember the story of Cinderella or Goldilocks and the Three Bears. One explanation is the law of overlearning, which can be stated as follows: Once we have learned something, additional (额外的) learning trials increase the length of time we will remember it. In childhood we usually continue to practice such skills as swimming, bicycle riding, and playing baseball long after we have learned them. We continue to listen to and remind ourselves of words such as “Twinkle, twinkle, little star” and childhood tales such as Cinderella and Goldilocks. We not only learn but overlearn. The multiplication tables (乘法口诀表) are an exception (例外) to the general rule that we forget rather quickly the things that we learn in school, because they are another of the things we overlearn in childhood. The law of overlearning explains why cramming (突击学习) for an examination, though it may result in a passing grade, is not a satisfactory way to learn a college course. By cramming, a student may learn the subject well enough to get by on the examination, - 13 - but he is likely soon to forget almost everything he learned. A little overlearning, on the other hand, is really necessary for one’s future development. 32. What is the main idea of Paragraph 1? A. People remember well what they learned in childhood. B. Children have a better memory than grown-ups. C. Poem reading is a good way to learn words. D. Stories for children are easy to remember. 33. The author explains the law of overlearning by _________. A. presenting research findings B. setting down general rules C. making a comparison D. using examples 34. According to the author, being able to use multiplication tables is ________ . A. a result of overlearning B. a special case of cramming C. a skill to deal with math problems D. a basic step towards advanced studies 35. What is the author’s opinion on cramming? A. It leads to failure in college exams. B. It’s helpful only in a limited way. C. It’s possible to result in poor memory. D. It increases students’ learning interest. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出填入空白处的最佳选项并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 36 I say this a lot because it’s important: you need to walk more. There are a few main reasons why I’m so fond of walking, also known as moving frequently at a slow pace. 37 Walking might not be as effective as other forms of exercise, but frequent walking will help anyone with two functioning legs that allow movement who would otherwise meld into the couch lose some body fat. - 13 - It’s good for your brain. Walking does much more than work the area underneath your neck. The farther an older person can walk in six minutes, the better he or she performs on memory and logic tests. Folks who perform poorly on the walking test tend to have reduced grey matter volume in certain sections of their brains. It reduces stress. 38 Go for a walk, preferably in a natural setting. For me, it’s the beach of the Malibu hills. For others, it might be the woods or even a park. It prevents falls in the elderly. Walking on uneven, natural ground like hiking trails, improves balance and reduces falls in the elderly. 39 The earlier you start habitually walking, the better your ability to navigate the land without falling will be. It gives you a chance to think. When we walk, we think. And because walking is a low-difficulty effort, we can direct our executive functioning to more internal matters. We work through problems, come up with ideas, replay conversations, scheme, and discover solutions. 40 A. It modestly reduces body fat. B. It lowers blood pressure, especially after meals. C. Don’t wait until you’re already at risk of falling, though. D. What do I do when I need to get away from a particularly stressful day? E. Try to keep the walk as close to the meal as possible to aid in weight loss. F. Even though some of you may be tired of me saying this, it needs saying. G. Or maybe we just think about that funny dog we saw on the way to work the other day. One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life - 13 - can be 41 when you are not busy finding fault with it. Several years ago I 42 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 43 by things. People were always doing things that annoyed her, and 44 was ever good enough. She was highly self-critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 45 person. Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 46 . Her best friend was seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 47 to deal with was that the day before the 48 , Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing her 49 of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and various other things she felt she needed to 50 . It wasn’t until her friend was badly hurt that Kerry became 51 her habit of finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to appreciate life rather than to 52 everything so harshly (刻薄). She was able to transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 53 as well. Perhaps most of us aren’t as extreme at fault-finding, 54 when we’re honest, we can be sharply 55 of the world. I’m not suggesting you 56 problems, or that you pretend things are 57 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as they are — 58 most of the time, and especially when it’s not a really big 59 . Train yourself to “bite your tongue”, and with a little 60 , you’ll get really good at letting things go. And when you do, you’ll get back your enthusiasm and love for life. 41. We saw a lot of children without hair because of their treatment. We played with them and taught them to draw pictures. They suffered great pains, 62 were very friendly. It was much easier to communicate with them than we 63 (expect). One day, a girl suggested teaching us how to fold paper. She taught - 13 - us 64 great patience, explaining each step slowly and clearly. Though we could easily do that, we still pretended 65 (know) nothing about it. We followed her and did everything she told us. Finally, when we finished our work 66 (success), she gave each of us 67 big hug. We could see the pride and happiness on her face. Her father was 68 thankful to us that he held our hands tightly, tears in his eyes. It was not until then 69 we knew the girl would receive an operation the next day.
