At the time , the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(减 轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born. The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30, 000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed) , and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year. 16.What led the British government to build the London Underground? A. Traffic jams and pollution. B. Population and pollution. C. Overcrowding and traffic jams. D. The poverty and subway problems. 17.How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem? A. It made the tunnels larger. B. It put fans in the tunnels. C. It cleaned the chemical gases in the tunnels. D. It reduced the number of passengers riding in the train. 18.The underlined phrase “catch on” most probably means “______”. A. be troublesome B. become popular and fashionable C. keep up with D. seize 19. Which of the following is TRUE? A. To relocate the workers’ homes outside London , the government built the subway. B. There were so many problems and delays that in 18th century the first subway opened. C. The subway greatly eased the pressure of traffic. D. There were not enough seats for the passengers the first day the subway opened. B What will man be like in the future – in 5000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make guesses, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time. Let us take an obvious example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller. Again, in the modem world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity. As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too: the head, in particular the forehead, will grow larger. Nowadays our eyes are in constant use. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger. On the other hand, we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modem life. But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald. Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at! This may well be true. All the same, in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own. 20. The passage mainly tells us . A. man's life will be different in the future B. what man will look like in the future C. man is growing taller and uglier as time passes D. human's organs' functions will become weak 21. The change in man's size of forehead will probably be because . A. he makes use only 20% of the brain's capacity B. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries C. the other 80% of his brain will grow in due time D. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on 22. What will be true about a human being in the future? A. He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful. B. He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses. C. His fingers will grow weaker because he won't have to make use of them. D. He will think and feel in a different way. 23. It is implied that . A. human beings will become less attractive in the future. B. less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration(退化) C. human beings hope for a change in the future life. D. future life is always predictable. C This horse-riding and Spanish cooking break promises a learning holiday with a difference. Some kids might be sad, especially if they have to stand at one end or the other. For most kids, height isn’t something they can change, so what do you do if you think you are too tall or too short? It might be girls feeling too tall and boys feeling too short. If you are still worried about your height, talk to your parents and your doctor. Most kids don’t have a growth problem that needs help from a doctor, but it’s always OK to ask if you’re concerned. So for most kids, it seems like there’s not much to do but wait to see how it all turns out. But you can do something right now: Eat healthy food and take care of yourself. If you get enough nutrition, sleep, and exercise you need, you’re likely to reach your maximum potential ( 可 能 的 ) height. In other words, you’ll grow as tall as you were meant to grow. And even though you may hear people say it, taking extra vitamins or supplements that you can buy in a store won’t help you get taller. Just stick to a healthy diet if you want to be the tallest you can be! Kids who wish they weren’t so tall should still eat healthy food and take care of themselves. Eating less won’t make you end up any shorter unless you really starved yourself and made yourself sick. As they get older, most kids learn to feel comfortable with their height, whether they are tall, short, or somewhere in between. 28. The text mainly tells us ______. A. how to deal with the height problem B. how to grow taller C. how to keep healthy D. how to talk about height with others 29. The kids who have to stand at the end of the line might be sad because ______. A. they think it’s unfair B. they don’t want to follow the teacher’s instructions C. they are not satisfied with their height D. they think the teacher is making fun of them 30. According to the text, kids ______. A. can grow to a satisfying height by eating healthy food B. may stop growing by eating less C. can grow taller by taking some medicine D. should eat healthily no matter whether they’re too tall or too short 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两 项为多余选项。 Kids with special needs refer to any kid who might need extra help because of a medical, emotional, or learning problem.
