‎ ‎ A Melbourne‎, Australia     Melbourne is a hot-spot travel destination, and it’s easy to see why with its beautiful beaches and busy city life.     Why it’s a great choice: Australia as a whole is considered a safe destination for international travel, and because of that, many solo travelers go there. As an English-speaking country, you won’t be faced with any language barriers. Melbourne is easy to get around because you can walk or bike practically anywhere! Thailand     Thailand is great for solo travelers—perhaps because it is one of the Buddhist mindsets, which promote equality among the sexes.     Why it’s a great choice: Thailand is known for its friendly atmosphere, and as a travel hot-spot, there are plenty of chances to meet other like-minded travelers. Well known for being very cheap, especially in the north. A good choice if you want to get away on a budget. Thailand has a lot to offer, from the party-central Bangkok to beautiful beaches and tropical(热带)jungle. Hong Kong, China     Hong Kong is a great place to relax for solo travelers as it is full of “Zen moments,” such as beautiful gardens and Tai Chi classes.     Why it’s a great choice: Hong Kong is regarded as one of the safest cities in the world. If ‎ you’re not well-traveled, or perhaps a bit tired of things like language barriers, Hong Kong is a great place to start, as it mixes both Eastern and Western at the same time. Bali, Indonesia     Bali is a spiritual place with yoga, spas, healthy food and beaches. The combination of friendly people and splendidly visual culture has made Bali Indonesia number one tourist attraction.     Why it’s so great: You won’t be the only solo traveler in Bali. Everyone is known for being extremely friendly and you’re sure to meet some amazing characters along the way. As a Hindu island, Bali is the perfect place for a relaxing and spiritual retreat(静修). The Sacred‎ Monkey ‎Forest in Ubud is fantastic—if you like monkeys, anyway. 1. What do the four places have in common according to the text? A. They offer good spas and yoga. B. He decided to take his daughter along with him. She was only ten years old. This would be her first trip with her father on what he had always been famous for.‎ Larry first began diving when he was his daughter's age. Similarly, his father had taken him along on one of his expeditions. Since then, he had never looked back. Larry started out ‎ by renting diving suits from the small diving shop just along the shore. He had hated them. They were too big or too small. Then, there was the instructor. He gave him a short lesson before allowing him into the water with his father. He had made an exception. Larry would never have been able to go down without at least five hours of theory and another similar number of hours on practical lessons with a guide. Children his age were not even allowed to dive.‎ After the first expedition, Larry's later diving adventures only got better and better. There was never a dull moment. In his black and blue suit and with an oxygen tank fastened on his back, Larry dived from boats into the middle of the ocean. Dangerous areas did not prevent him from continuing his search. Sometimes, he was limited to a cage underwater but that did not bother him. At least, he was still able to take photographs of the underwater creatures.‎ Larry's first expedition without his father was in the Cayman Islands. There were numerous diving spots in the area and Larry was determined to visit all of them. Fortunately for him, a man offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larry did not even know what the time was, how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he had taken. The diving spots afforded such a wide array of fish and sea creatures that Larry saw more than thirty varieties of creatures.‎ Larry looked at his daughter. She looked as excited as he had been when he was her age. He hoped she would be able to continue the family tradition. Already, she looked like she was much braver than Larry had been then. This was the key to a successful underwater expedition.‎ ‎5. In what way was this expedition different for Larry?‎ ‎ A. His daughter had grown up. B. He had become a famous diver.‎ ‎ C. His father would dive with him. D. His daughter would dive with him.‎ ‎6. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?‎ ‎ A. Larry had some privileges (special rights). ‎ ‎ B. Larry liked the rented diving suits.‎ ‎ C. Divers had to buy diving equipment.‎ ‎ D. Ten-year-old children were permitted to dive.‎ ‎7. Why did Larry have to stay in a cage underwater sometimes?‎ ‎ A. To protect himself from danger. B. To dive into the deep water.‎ ‎ C. To admire the underwater view. D. To take photos more conveniently.‎ ‎8. What can be learned from the underlined sentence?‎ ‎ A. Larry didn’t wear a watch. B. Larry was not good at math.‎ ‎ C. Larry had a poor memory. D. Larry enjoyed the adventure.‎ C At home, ordering food from a menu is a normal, everyday routine. I don’t even give it a second thought. In China, it’s a whole other story! Here, ordering is a fun game of trial and error, and the adventure begins before the food is even served!‎ Many restaurants in central Beijing advertise “English language menus”, but the translations can just add to the confusion. Although accompanying pictures can be a helpful relief, the translations often make the whole experience even more amusing. During my first few weeks in China I tried some delicious dishes with strange names. As an experiment, my friends and I would order things like “students addicted to chicken gristle (软骨)” and “red burned lion head”. It was always fun to see what landed on our table. Eventually we learned that “lion head” was actually pork, and “students” are “addicted” to diced (切碎的) chicken with green pepper.‎ Recently, I came across a busy restaurant down a narrow side street in a Beijing hutong. It was lunchtime and the small room was packed with people sitting on small stools eating noodles. I was hungry and cold, and the steaming bowls looked irresistible! I sat myself down and called out for a “caidan!” In response, the waitress pointed to a wall at the back of the restaurant. The wall was full of Chinese characters describing numerous dishes. There was only one sentence in English: “crossing over the bridge noodles”.‎ I had never heard of the dish and had no idea what it would taste like. I took a gamble and ordered one bowl of “crossing over the bridge noodles”. A few minutes later the waitress carried over a heavy bowl full of broth (肉汤) and I quickly dug in. It was the best bowl of noodles I had ever tasted! I have been back again and again and each time I point at the one English sentence – “crossing over the bridge noodles”. I always enter a restaurant in China feeling excited and a little nervous. Who knows what the next ordering adventure will reveal?‎ ‎9. How does the writer find the English-language menus in many of Beijing’s restaurants?‎ A. Confusing but amusing. B. Easy to understand.‎ C. Boring and annoying. D. Accurate and helpful.‎ ‎10. The underlined word “gamble” in the last paragraph probably means ______.‎ A. taste B. look C. sip D. risk ‎11. The passage mainly tells us ______.‎ A. the author’s favorite Chinese dishes B. the fun the author had ordering food in China’s restaurant C. a comparison between Western food and Chinese food D. the correct way to translate the names of Chinese dishes into English ‎12. The passage is developed mainly in the form of _____________.‎ A. examples and statements B. comparison and conclusion C. causes and effects D. time and description ‎ D The term “multitasking” originally referred to a computer's ability to carry out several tasks at one time. For many people, multitasking has become a way of life and even a key to success. In fact, some excellent mental aerobic exercises (大脑训练) involve engaging the brain in two or more challenging activities at a time. Although checking e-mail while talking on a phone and reading the newspaper may be second nature for some people, many times multitasking can make us less productive, rather than more. And studies show that too much multitasking can lead to increased stress, anxiety and memory loss.‎ In order to multitask, the brain uses an area known as the prefrontal cortex (前额叶脑皮层). Brain scans of volunteers performing multiple tasks together show that as they shift(转换) from task to task, this front part of the brain actually takes a moment of rest between tasks. You may have experienced a prefrontal cortex “moment of rest” yourself if you've ever dialed a phone number and suddenly forgotten who you called when the line is answered. What probably occurred is that between the dialing and the answering, your mind shifted to another thought or task, and then took that “moment” to come back. Research has also shown that for many volunteers, job efficiency declines while multitasking, as compared to when they perform only one task at a time.‎ Multitasking is easiest when at least one of the tasks is habitual, or requires little thought. Most people don’t find it difficult to eat and read the newspaper at the same time. However, when two or more attention-requiring tasks are attempted at one time, people sometimes make mistakes.‎ We often don't remember things as well when we're trying to manage several details at the same time. Without mental focus, we may not pay enough attention to new information coming in, so it never makes it into our memory stores. That is one of the main reasons why we forget people's names—even sometimes right after they have introduced themselves. Multitasking can also affect our relationships. If someone checks their e-mail while on the phone with a friend, they may come off as absent-minded or disinterested. It can also cause that person to miss or overlook key information being passed on to them.‎ ‎13. According to Paragraph 2, why may a person suddenly forget who he has called?‎ A. He may have his prefrontal cortex temporarily damaged. ‎ B. He is probably interrupted by another task.‎ C. He is probably not very familiar with the person he has called. ‎ D. He may need a rest between dialing and speaking.‎ ‎14. People tend to make mistakes when .‎ A. they perform several challenging tasks at a time ‎ B. new messages are processed one after another ‎ C. their relationships with others are affected ‎ D. the tasks require little thought ‎15. What is the main idea of the passage?‎ A. Multitasking has become a way of life. ‎ B. Multitasking often leads to efficiency decline.‎ C. Multitasking exercises need to be improved.‎ D. Multitasking enables people to remember things better. ‎ 第二节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ ‎ How to Stop Sleeping in Class?‎ Sleeping in class prevents you from paying attention to the teacher as well as stops you from learning about the material that is being taught.
