He worked on a very large dredge vessel(挖泥船), and he went where it went. This meant he spent a lot of time away from our North Carolina home.‎ As Christmas approached, he called from Galveston, Texas. Daddy explained to my mother why he would not be celebrating the holiday with us. Money was tight ‎ and he didn’t have a way to get back to his family.‎ Disappointed as she was, Mother knew he was right. She also knew we would be upset, so she told my two sisters, brother and me right away. The news hit me very hard. Christmas just wouldn’t be the same without Daddy.‎ When we woke up on Christmas morning, we were all happy with our gifts, so we went outside to play. As we were playing, I looked up and thought I saw my daddy in the distance. I ran inside to tell Mother. She did not believe me and told me not to make up stories. She just repeated he would have been home if he could, but it just wasn’t possible. ‎ But I was sure it was Daddy! I turned to go back outside when I heard familiar footsteps. I ran down the stairs. Daddy was home!‎ As I rushed into his outstretched arms, Daddy explained that he had tried everything to get home for Christmas, but without success. At the last minute, a group of the workers had decided to drive. But the nearest guy lived miles away. So Daddy started walking on Christmas Eve until he arrived home. He had walked all night to get home to his family.‎ Though the presents that year were wonderful, the best gift was not found under the tree.‎ ‎21. Daddy borrowed a car and drove home on Christmas morning ‎ C. Daddy took a ride in a co-worker’s car and then walked home ‎ D. Daddy walked all the way from Galveston, Texas ‎24. What is the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. The Christmas Spirits B. Daddy’s Special Love ‎ C. An Unforgettable Experience D. The Best “Christmas Gift”‎ B For some kids, old photos and baby pictures are embarrassing. For others, they ‎ are cherished keepsakes(纪念品).But for thousands of children living in orphanages(孤儿院)worldwide, these records of the past simply don't exist.Either the kids'parents weren't around to snap photos,or the pictures have been lost.Whatever the reason is,the Memory Project is giving orphans a lasting document of their youth.‎ Over the last two years, the Memory Project has provided hand﹣painted portraits (肖像)for more than 4,000 children living in orphanages in poor countries.Ben Schumaker,24,got the idea when he was visiting an orphanage in Guatemala in Central America. But he's not creating the portraits alone.Students in hundreds of high school art classes across the U.S.paint them using photos sent from the orphanages.‎ Schumaker believes that the artists benefit from the project as much as the orphans do."There are two purposes of the Memory Project,"he said."One is to offer a special gift to the child abroad. The other is to help open the eyes of the student who is painting."Staring into the eyes of another person," Schumaker believes, "creates a real connection." This connection raises awareness in U.S.schools about the needs of the world's poor children. "It's about planting a seed," he said.‎ Schumaker is also working on Books of Hope,a project in which students of all ages put together homemade books for children in Uganda and India. He hopes that one day children in Uganda and India will send books to the U.S."It's important for me to have it be a two﹣way exchange," Schmnaker says.‎ ‎25.Old photos and baby pictures are clearly unavailable to .‎ A.the kids in rich families B.the kids in common families C.the kids without parents D.the kids in expanded families ‎26.What does the underlined word"document"in the first paragraph most probably mean? ‎ A.money B.record C.appeal D.doubt ‎27.How can the orphans in Guatemala get a continuing record of their youth? .‎ A.By hand﹣painted portraits that Ben Schumaker painted.‎ B.By the Memory Project started by Ben Schumaker.‎ C.By the photos taken by the U.S.students in high schools.‎ D.By the photos the orphanage takes for them.‎ ‎28.What does the third paragraph mainly tell us? ‎ A.The special gifts that the world's poor children received.‎ B.The need of the US schools.‎ C.The advantages that the Memory Project brings.‎ D.How to help the orphans.‎ C Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, drink and even fight. They often do something dangerous. ‎ Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely (可能) to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong? Not really. So what's the reason?‎ According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”.‎ As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and also they care more about what they think of them. This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs. ‎ In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.‎ Why do peers have such a big influence on teens' behavior?‎ As Laurence sees it, a teenager's brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. ‎ But the good news is that a violent (暴力的)teenager doesn't necessarily become a violent adult. About twothirds to threequarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more selfcontrolled.” ‎ ‎29.What does the underlined word “irrational” in the second paragraph mean?‎ A.Quick. B.Crazy. C.Careful. D.Correct.‎ ‎30. Why are teenagers likely to make wrong decisions according to the text? ‎ A.They like difficult tasks.‎ B.They don't care about costs.‎ C.They are too young to tell right from wrong.‎ D.They care a lot about what their peers think of them.‎ ‎31.How does Laurence explain the influence of peer pressure on teens' behavior?‎ A.By comparing it with how a car works.‎ B.By comparing it with an accident. ‎ C.By showing research findings.‎ D.By giving examples.‎ D What do you do if your nation has a severe water shortage and happens to be located in a desert? If you have the resources, you turn to technology, which is what a company in the oil-rich United Arab Emirates (阿联酋) (UAE for short) is planning to do. The country, which gets less than four inches of rain per year, could solve its issue with water shortage by dragging icebergs from Antarctica to its shores. The first such attempt will begin in 2018.‎ Once the iceberg is at UAE shores, the ice above the waterline would be cut off and crushed into drinking water, which would then be stored in large water tanks. The iceberg would also have a broader impact, says Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman A1 Shehi:‎ ‎“Cold air out from an iceberg close to the shore of the Arabian Sea would cause rainstorms across the Arabian Gulf and the southern region of the Arabian Peninsula all year round. As the rising air expands, cools and condenses (冷凝) due to the decrease in air pressure, water vapor (水蒸气) is collected in the clouds, which becomes heavy and falls as rain.”‎ More icebergs will bring more water vapor and clouds, creating a profound effect on the regional climate over a decade, turning the desert into “green meadows”. The melting iceberg would also add fresh water to the Arabian sea, returning bio-diversity. There would also be a boost for tourism from all the people interested in looking at the icebergs.‎ The Emirates Iceberg Project comes from a group of efforts by NABL called “Filling the Empty Quarter”. The project aims to dramatically influence the deserts of the “Empty Quarter”, the planet’s largest sand desert. The region is also the richest oil-producing area in the world, including parts of Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE and Yemen.‎ ‎32. What is the UAE planning to do according to the text?‎ A. To collect fresh sea water from Antarctica.‎ B. To drag icebergs from Antarctica to the country.‎ C. To make icebergs from Antarctica melt.‎ D. To get 20 billion gallons of fresh water from icebergs.‎ ‎33. What A1 Shehi said reflects the effect of icebergs on ____.‎ A. the weather. B. the industry.‎ C. the biodiversity. D. the tourism.‎ ‎34. According to the text, the deserts of the “Empty Quarter” are A. turning into green meadows.‎ B. the resource of salt in the Arabian sea.‎ C. the empty area without population.‎ D. abundant in oil as a matter of fact.‎ ‎35. Which can be the best title for this passage?‎ A. Changing Deserts into Green Meadows Using Icebergs B. Using Antarctica’s Icebergs along the UAE Shores C. Dragging Icebergs from Antarctica for Water Shortage D.
