For every car journey, day trip or family holiday, many books were always packed to keep me busy. Since then, I’ve continued reading all kinds of books but I’ll always love my childhood favorites.‎ ‎ The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time—Mark Haddon ‎ This children’s mystery novel is interesting, exciting ,thought-provoking(发人深思的), sad and happy all at the same time. The main character is a 15-year-old boy who has autism(自闭症).the book gives you a window into his world, his thoughts, his hopes and his dreams. It’s easy to read and both kids and adults love it. A must-read in my opinion.‎ ‎ Secret Seven—Enid Blyton ‎ If you love adventures, this one is for you. The Secret Seven are a group of child detectives who make it their duty to solve crimes. They have many adventures along the way. It’s a fun book that you won’t want to stop reading. And in fact, there is more than one book. There’s a series of books about the Secret Seven’s adventures so if you like the first one, you’re in luck!‎ ‎ Matilda—Roald Dahl ‎ It’s now a film and show at the theatre, but we can’t forget the original book. Matilda is about a loveable little girl who is very clever and, like me, loves to read. She goes to school and meets the very scary Miss Trunchbull who Tortures (折磨) children, but thankfully makes friends with a kind teacher. The book will have you crying one moment and laughing the next.‎ ‎ The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe—C.S. Lewis ‎ As a kid I read the book ,watched the film and listened to the tape. I really couldn’t get enough of the book. It’s an exciting story set in a magical land called Narnia. When you’re reading it, you’ll feel like you’re really there. You’ll get caught up in the adventures of the four children and the characters they meet. I can’t rate it highly enough.‎ ‎21. Which book tells an autistic teen’s story?‎ ‎ A. Matilda.‎ ‎ B. Secret Seven.‎ ‎ C. The Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe—C.S. Lewis.‎ ‎ D. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time—Mark Haddon.‎ ‎22. What do we know about Secret Seven?‎ ‎ A. It is scary but moving.‎ ‎ B. It consists of many stories.‎ ‎ C. It’s extremely popular with adults.‎ ‎ D. Its characters are strange but lovely.‎ ‎23. What do Matilda and The Lion, the Witch and The Wardrobe have in common?‎ ‎ A. Both are adventure-themed.‎ ‎ B. Both have stage adaptations.‎ ‎ C. Both are based on true stories.‎ ‎ D. Both have been adapted for the cinema.‎ B ‎ Imaging walking through the park on a sunny day. You look up to see a spider twice the size of your head. It looks so real that it seems to be moving down its web toward you.‎ ‎ Before you scream and run away, look closer. That 50-pound spider is a wood sculpture, made by artist David Rogers. It is one of 14 bugs (虫子)David has on display in parks and gardens around the United States.‎ ‎ David’s collection is called Big Bugs. It includes three monster ants. Each one is 25 feet long. That’s almost as long as a school bus! Some of David other bugs are all big enough to sit on. ‎ ‎ David hopes his huge sculptures will help us to stop and notice bugs. We may not see them working. Sometimes we may not even want them around. But David points out that bugs are an important part of nature. They make the soil a better place for plants to grow, they pollinate flowers, they eat other insects, and they are food to many creatures.‎ ‎ As a child, David did not get the best grades. He was not even the best painter. But he loved to ‎ make things. Using only sticks and string(绳), he would build tiny villages small enough for an insect. One day when he was older, he saw a bent tree that reminded him of the backbone of an animal. He decided to form a giant beast by adding more braches. The result was a dinosaur named Goliath, his first large sculpture. David has also made sculptures by welding(焊接) metal. By joining together old car parts, he made a housefly and a dragonfly.‎ ‎ Does this sound like fun to you? Good news—David believes there’s an artist in everyone. Of course, you probably won’t start out by making a 25-foot ant. It took David years to come up with his huge bugs. But as David says, “There’s no right or wrong way to express yourself with art. Let your imagination run free.”‎ ‎24. What do we know about the spider mentioned in the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. It is almost as long as a school bus.‎ ‎ B. It is a newly-discovered species.‎ ‎ C. It is David’s favorite animal.‎ ‎ D. It is actually a wok of art.‎ ‎25. What’s the purpose of David’s bug display?‎ ‎ A. To show his artistic talent.‎ ‎ B. To raise money for local parks.‎ ‎ C. To teach others how to sculpture.‎ ‎ D. To call public attention to insects.‎ ‎26. What did David mainly use to make his sculpture called Goliath?‎ ‎ A. Metal. B. Wood.‎ ‎ C. Real bugs. D. Sticks and string.‎ ‎27. To be an artist, what does David think is very important?‎ ‎ A. Having good grades.‎ ‎ B. Being good at drawing.‎ ‎ C. Expressing yourself correctly.‎ ‎ D. Making full use of your imagination.‎ C Where have all the bicycles gone? Getting that first two-wheeler used to be one of childhood’s most exciting moments. It meant an expansion of the child’s world. The opportunity to travel beyond one’s street and meet friends at the playground, ball field, or just go to someone’s house on your own was an exciting new stage of independence. It also meant lots of exercise.‎ But bicycle sales are decreasing. Now, less than half of the children aged 7⁃11 regularly ride a bike. This is a serious change in the culture of our children’s lives.‎ But it is not just the crazy schedule of parents or the increased temptation of “screens”----- TV, video games, computers-----to play with. Another factor is playing a bigger role in the narrowing world of children. Surveys indicate parents fear that if they allow their children to roam ( 闲逛) freely about the town, those children may be abducted (诱拐) by strangers. School playgrounds are no longer safe places to hang out. The woods are no longer a great place to explore.‎ Parents couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, there are only 100--130 stranger abductions a year in the U.S. Besides, 75% of all abductions are carried out by people the child knows, most of which are done by divorced parents who are upset about custody (监护) arrangements. You and your child are three times more likely to be hit by lightning at a soccer game than your child is likely to ‎ experience a stranger abduction!‎ Children running free are very safe. Not only safe, but these children are learning to make creative use of their time, being physically active, and improving their social skills. Now what more could you ask for?‎ Don’t just shake your head and smile, as many parents do today, when your child tend to use instant messaging to talk to her friend next door. Turn off the computer and send her next door! Consider it a pleasure to yell down the street or call a friend to find your child at dinnertime. Let’s make bicycles something special for children once again.‎ ‎28. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 1?‎ ‎ A. The benefits of riding bicycles B. Different forms of exercise ‎ C. The causes of the disappearance of bicycles D. Exciting moments in childhood ‎29. Children hardly ride bicycle today mainly because _________.‎ ‎ A. there are few safe places for them to ride B. they have a very busy schedule at school ‎ C. they prefer to spend time in front of screens D. their parents are worried about their safety ‎30. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 is intended to_______.‎ ‎ A. tell readers bad weather is a great danger to children ‎ B. stress an unhappy marriage does great harm to children ‎ C. explain there is little chance of a child’s being abducted ‎ D. warn children of the danger of watching foot-ball games ‎31. The purpose of the passage is to _____.‎ A. call on people to ride bicycles ‎ B. advise parents to let their children ride more C. change parents’ attitude towards riding bicycles ‎ D. encourage children to play outdoors more D ‎ Scientists have been working to grow meat “in vitro,” or in a laboratory, for many years. In the laboratory, the mix cells from a horse and a pig. They feed the cells to help them increase in number and grow into a small piece of meat.‎ ‎ Right now, the meat that scientists have made is very small and looks gray because in vitro meat does not need blood to grow. But this is not its only problem. It takes a long time for the meat to grow and scientists do not know how to make a large amount. It also costs a lot of money to make in vitro meat. Making enough for one meal would cost $250,000.‎ ‎ Although producing in vitro meat has many problems, scientists continue to work because in vitro meat would have many advantages. Since we have 7,000,000,000 people on the planet to feed, in vitro meat can help lower the need for the earth’s resources.‎ ‎ Besides, “Moving the production of meat from farms to laboratories would help cut down the huge amount of harmful gases produced by farm animals,” says reporter Nick Collins.‎ ‎ In vitro meat could solve many of the problems of animal meat. But can humans eat this in vitro meat? Scientists do not know if it even tastes like real meat. Because of food research laws, they are not yet able to taste their meat. But they hope someday people can buy it in their local market. They say it is real meat and it is just made in a different way.‎ ‎ A lot of people are still worried about in vitro meat. However, it will be years before the meat is ‎ ready to sell. Kate Shepard, a writer for Mother Jones magazine, says, “it will require hard testing before it can be fed to humans. It is still such a new idea that we do not know yet what health problems it may have. Right now, there are no rules for in vitro meat.”‎ ‎32. What are the scientists trying to find out their experiment?‎ ‎ A. How to get a new kind of animal.‎ ‎ B. How to make a new kind of meat.‎ ‎ C. How to make animal meat taste better.‎ ‎ D. How to greatly increase animals’ numbers.‎ ‎33. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?‎ ‎ A. The ways to improve the experiment.‎ ‎ B. The bad influence the experiment brings.‎ ‎ C. The problems scientists face in the experiment.‎ ‎ D. The difficulty in collecting money for the experiment.‎ ‎34. What does Nick think of in vitro meat?‎ ‎ A. It stops people’s cruelty to animals.‎ ‎ B. It is environmentally friendly.‎ ‎ C. It is against the rules.‎ ‎ D. It worries him a lot.‎ ‎35.
