奋斗中学2017---2018学年第一学期高二年级期末试题 英 语 第I卷(笔试)‎ 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)‎ 第一节 ‎(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。‎ A Mike is an automotive mechanic(汽车修理技工), but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but always feared applying for a new job.  One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Mike immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Mike finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Mike said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It’s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Mike agreed.  Upon arrival, Mike found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Mike still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the interviewer’s office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Mike’s heart sank. “With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” he thought to himself.  Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Mike’s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.  “Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to ‎ have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Mike sat down and they shared a cup of well-deserved coffee as he landed himself a new job.  1. Why did Mike apply for a new job? A. He was out of work.                  ‎ B. He was bored with his job.  C. He wanted a higher position.    ‎ D. He hoped to find a better boss. 2. What did Mike see on the way to the interview? A. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really improve people’s health. Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their hearts, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works on several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial. Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effects of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which reduces both stress and pain. As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics(诊所), in which they help to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughter.‎ ‎6. According to the passage, which of the following statements is WRONG? A. Laughter is good for health . ‎ B. Laughter can make you become old quickly. C. Laughter helps to reduce pain. ‎ D. Laughter, just like physical exercise, is good for our body. 7. Why do some doctors hold laughter clinics? A. Because they want to earn more money. B. Because they think they will help the patients recover from illnesses. C. Because they want to improve their patients’‎ ‎ condition. D. Because they want their patients to practice how to laugh. 8. What would be the best title for this passage? A. Both laughter and physical exercise are good for health. B. Laughter clinics help patients improve their condition. C. Laughter can reduce the effects of pain. D. Laughter is the best medicine. ‎ C One night, the first floor of the house suddenly caught fire. The fire was big, and soon became a sea of fire. On the second floor lived a little girl and her grandmother; the little girl’s parents had died, and she lived together with her grandma. In order to rescue the little girl, the grandmother was burned to death, leaving the little girl crying for help loudly. How could people enter the house? At that very moment, a man carrying a ladder rushed to the flames and entered the house through the window. When he appeared again in the eyes of the people, the little girl was in his arms. He gave the child to the crowd, and then disappeared into the night. This little girl had no family. Two months later a meeting was held to find a person to adopt(收养)the girl. A teacher was willing to adopt this child, and said she could give her the best education; a farmer wanted to adopt this child, saying that village life would let the child grow up healthily and happily; a rich man said, “I can give the child everything that others can do.” A lot of people who wanted to adopt this child said a lot about the benefits of their adopting the child. But the little girl’s face had no expression. At that time, a man, through the crowd, walked straight to the little girl, and opened his arms for the little girl. People were puzzled, and they found that the man had terrible scars on his arms. You look up every new word in the dictionary. Bad move. All that does slow you down. Even electric or CD – ROM dictionaries can get in the way of your reading progress. A dictionary is like a road map. It can help you if you get lost and point you in the right direction. But if you stop to look at the “map” each time you take a step, you’ll get nowhere fast.    On your English learning “journey”, a dictionary can be a helpful “travel companion”----if it is not overused. To help you start thinking in English, use an English-to-English dictionary. Otherwise, you will always depend on your native language and end up translating in your ‎ head.     A good dictionary can help you do more than just find the meaning of a word. It can help you verify(核实)spelling, check word forms and grammar usage, find example sentence and learn pronunciation. Some dictionaries even provide exercises to teach you how to use their resources.     Take time to get to know your dictionary. Learn the pronunciation symbols. Understand what the abbreviations (缩写字) mean. Try to master the important grammar rules. Look for charts, diagrams and lists that might be useful in the future. You will discover how helpful it can be to make friends with your dictionary. And as they say, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” 13. Why do we need a good English-to-English dictionary? A. Because it is a good friend. B. Because it can help us to find the right direction if we get lost. C. Without it we’ll always depend on our native language and end up translating ‎ in our head. D. Because it can help us to start thinking in English and in Chinese. 14. The underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refers to __________. A. pronunciation symbols and grammar rules B. abbreviations and usage for grammar rules C. the meaning of a word, spelling and grammar usage D. charts, diagrams and lists 15. According to the passage, which statement can lead you to believe? A. The more you use a dictionary, the better you can understand the article. B. The more you use a dictionary, the faster you may read. C. The more you use the resources in a dictionary, the more you can benefit ‎ from it. D. The better a dictionary is, the more expensive it is.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Health is considered the most important thing in the world.
