B When Huang Lizhi took her first class in African sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa in February, her professor asked her and her classmates what impresses them most when it comes to Africa. Unexpectedly, Huang, 31, found that words like “poverty” and “safari” – negative words that were often associated with the continent in media reports – were the kind of terms her African classmates didn’t want to hear. Instead, they preferred to hear the question answered in this way: “Africa is the cradle of humankind” and “Africans are passionate and generous”. Apparently, there are some misunderstandings between us. It’s true that with incidents like the Ebola outbreak in Western Africa and the emergence (出现) of pirates off the coast of Somalia hitting the news, it’s easy for us to keep forgetting that Africa has one of the world’s oldest civilizations – Egypt, born by the world’s longest river, the Nile. The proof is in the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Great Sphinx of Giza, which are both popular among tourists. And the tombs of ancient Egypt have also become endless sources for the literature and film industries. When it comes to the natural environment of Africa, our misunderstandings are only bigger. But the truth is that instead of being extremely hot all year and covered by desert, the continent has large areas of savannas (稀树草原) where lions, giraffes and zebras live, the snowcapped Kilimanjaro – the highest mountain in Africa – and even thick forest on the island of Madagascar. These misunderstandings are one of the reasons why the 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation was held on Sept 3 and 4 – to understand each other better. Indeed, only by visiting Africa herself did Huang see the convenient living conditions, the amazing natural beauty and the friendly people. In her eyes, her classmates were as hopeful about the future of their own countries as they were about Africa as a whole, and they were quick to demonstrate both their strong will and activity. “At that moment, I knew exactly what they wanted – they wanted their culture to be respected.” 24. Which of the following best explains “cradle ” underlined in paragraph 2? A. A small bed for babies. B. A basket to hold something. C. A place for people to relax themselves. D. A place where something important began. 25. What can we infer about Africa according to the passage ? A. It is very hot all the year round. B. It’s not a safe continent to live in C. It’s different from what we imagine. D. It is bound to have a bright future 26. Which of the following would Huang agree with ? A. To see is to believe B. Think twice before you do C. A miss is as good as a mile D. Don’t judge a person by his appearance 27. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Valuing a Culture. B. Understanding Africa. C. Paying a Visit to Africa. D. Discovering a Continent. C When a Canadian woman was hit by a train and badly injured in northern Italy, rescue services quickly went to her aid on the tracks. But as they treated the injured woman, a young man photographed the scene from the station platform in a selfie(自拍) that has caused widespred anger. Corriere della Sear said he appeared to be making a “V for victory”sign with one hand while taking the shot with the other. Police caught the young selfie-taker and forced him to delete his picture. The young man has been investigated(调查)and does not appear to have committed a crime. But the image of him pointing his mobile phone at the rescue scene has appeared on many front pages in Italy and it attracted incredulity to the investigation so that the public insisted that further investigations should be carried out. Journalist Giorgio Lambri, who pictured this young selfie-taker, complained“we have completely lost a sense of morality”. Besides, a commentary in La Stampa spoke of“a cancer that affects the Internet”. “The young man who took the selfie was not bad, ”argued Antonella Boralevi. “Instead, he had turned off his soul and his personality and become an‘automation(机械行事之人)on the Internet’.” What remains unclear is how the young woman was hit by a train in the first place. According to reports at the time, the control system for closing the train’s doors was faulty and the woman may have fallen out of the train while opening a door on the wrong side. However, there was also a suggestion that she may have been rushing to board the train as it was leaving the station. 28.What does the underlined word“incredulity”probably mean? A.Suspicion B.Resistance C.Attention D.Sensitivity 29.According to Antonella Boralevi, the man who took the selfie . A.was a bad person B.was not very moral C.should be forgiven D.did his automatically 30.What does the last paragraph focus on? A.The failure of the train’s doors B.The process of the woman being hit C.The likely causes of the train accident D.The severity of the woman’s injuries 31.Where can we probably find this article? A.In a review B.In a newspaper C.In a research D.In a photography magazine D Throughout the world, parents talk differently to babies than they do to adults. With their young kids, parents use baby talks, featuring long pauses and a roller coaster of pitch(音高)changes. While parents may feel a bit silly using baby talks, they shouldn’t in fact. Babies not only prefer listening to them, but they also learn new words more easily from them. By highlighting the structure of speech, such as the differences between the vowels(元音)“a” and “o”, baby talks help babies translate sounds into meaningful units of language. Actually, the timbre(音色)plays a role. The timbre of an instrument clearly affects how we experience music, but its role in language is less obvious. Looking into the timbre of baby talks, researchers made some surprising discoveries. In a new study published in Current Biology, researchers reported for the first time that mothers shifted their overall vocal timbre when speaking to their babies, as if they were changing their voice into a different instrument to address these unique little listeners. In the Princeton Baby Lab, where researchers study how children learn, they recorded English-speaking mothers while they talked with their 7-to-12-month-old babies and while they spoke to an adult experimenter, and found that adult-directed and baby-directed speech had consistently different timbres. Most surprising, in a second sample of non-English-speaking mothers, researchers found that this timbre shift was also highly consistent across nine diverse languages. This suggests these timbre shifts may represent a universal form of communication with babies. Being able to identify baby talks across multiple languages could give us rich information about the amount and type of language children hear at preschool across different cultural environments. This could help researchers and educators predict and improve outcomes such as vocabulary and success at school. Parents should feel self-conscious about their own baby talks: with them they’re helping their baby learn. 32.What is the advantage of parents’ using baby talks? A.It is good for babies to change pitch. B.It helps translate sounds into different languages. C.It makes babies learn more language. D.It helps babies improve their language ability. 33.What did the study find? A.Mothers usually changed their timbre when talking with their babies. B.Mothers avoided using the sound like instruments to talk with babies. C.Non-English-speaking mothers spoke to babies with consistent timbre. D.English-speaking mothers were good at changing timbre to speak with adults. 34.What is paragraph 6 mainly about? A.The aim of the research. B.The process of the research. C.The effect of parents’ timbre shifts. D.The meaning of studying baby talks. 35.What may be the author’s suggestion to parents with babies? A.Teaching babies to talk early. B.Practicing mothers’ timbre often. C.Using baby talks to communicate with babies. D.Being conscious of babies’ emotional need. 第二节 七选五(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出正确答案,。选项中有两项为多余选项 If you sat up or had a poor night of sleep last night, you know it’s difficult to stay awake in class today. Your teacher’s voice might begin to sound like a lullaby(催眠曲). 36 To keep yourself awake, some tips are worth trying in class. Sit in the front of the room. Why? 37 Besides, it’ll be easier to pay attention and participate when you’re in the front. You’ll also be near the people who are more likely to participate, and the sound of their voices might keep you awake. 38 Ask and answer questions and pay attention to the lecture. This will help if you’re tired or discouraged by the content of the lecture, because you can ask your teacher questions to get to the bottom of the problems. Talking will also keep you engaged and alert. It might be helpful to make a goal for yourself to answer or ask at least 3 questions per class. 39 For example, you might say “I didn’t understand the last part of the proof. Could you explain it again in more detail?” Listen actively to the lesson. Active listening is a great way to force yourself to stay awake because it requires engagement of your mind as well as your body. 40 To effectively listen to your teacher, you should try to maintain eye contact, face the speaker, pay close attention to what the speaker is saying and ask questions during a pause in the lecture. A. Participate in class activities. B. Develop interest in the subject. C. If so, classrooms can be boring because you’re tired. D. Keep silent all the time and try to catch as much information as possible. E. To avoid annoying your teacher, you should try to keep your questions on topic. F. You’ll be more motivated to stay awake if you know that the teacher can see you easily. G.
