Unfortunately, in this modern world, we have become confused by very narrow standards of beauty. Images of celebrities who never seem to age are seen everywhere these days. We forget the fact that most of these images are the result of super photo manipulation (处理), driven by the incredibly powerful beauty industry. We are all different — why should we all look the same? Isn’t there more to life than undergoing surgery in order to have the same boring face that everybody else wants to have? —Dr Elisabeth McKenna, Psychologist Yes, it’s fake! That’s what I told my friends when they started asking me about my nose job. I’d always been sensitive to my nose, but it took me a long time before I decided to go for cosmetic surgery. I took advice from several doctors and after careful consultation I finally decided to have it done. I had been saving money from my parttime job and my parents helped me out with the rest. It was quite expensive but I don’t regret a penny of it. In fact I wish I’d had it done a few years ago. I’ m sure I wouldn’t have been teased so much at school. —Debbie Caron, Student It makes me really angry to think of the millions of people who spend a fortune on cosmetic surgery. Surgery should be carried out for medical purposes, not vanity (虚荣心). I would rather all the money spent on cosmetic surgery was available to treat people around the world who are in need but can’t get proper medical treatment. Furthermore, there are thousands of underqualified surgeons out there who only care about getting as rich as possible as quickly as possible. They don’t care about the psychological and physical damage they do. The whole industry makes me sick. We should do something to ban it. 1. What does Dr Elisabeth McKenna suggest? A. Don’t be fooled by “perfection”. B. Cosmetic surgery often goes wrong. C. The beauty industry needs improving. D. It’s necessary to set new standards of beauty. 根据第一段最后一部分“We forget the fact that most of these images are the result of super photo manipulation (处理), driven by the incredibly powerful beauty industry. We are all different...” A。 2. What did Debbie Caron’s cosmetic surgery bring to her? A. More friends. B. More worries. C. More selfconfidence. D. More job opportunities. 根据—Debbie Caron, Student所说内容“in fact I wish I'd had it done a few years ago. I'm sure I wouldn't have been teased so much at school.” 3. How does Danny Glass feel about those who have cosmetic surgery? A. They should be treated as patients. B. They hurt themselves badly. C. They can have a new start. D. They should be ashamed. 根据最后一段Danny Glass, Student所说的“there are thousands of underqualified surgeons out there who only care about getting as rich as possible as quickly as possible. They don’t care about the psychological and physical damage they do. The whole industry makes me sick. We should do something to ban it.” D。 4. What would be the best title for the text? A. Hard talk — cosmetic surgery B. The future of cosmetic surgery C. The mystery of cosmetic surgery D. A new fashion — cosmetic surgery 解析:A 主旨大意题。 B (2018·安徽合肥高三教学质量检测) Many young people these days adore the advertised magazine body and become too focused on attaining this image instead of worrying more about what lasts and even grows over time. But could you imagine being considered beautiful for years, and suddenly being ugly after moving to another continent? It is a sad reality that people don't realize how vacillating the idea of beauty can be from one country to another. Think of the most typical American girl you know. Is she blondehaired with white skin and light blue eyes, and does she love shopping or sports? Now place this girl in the heart of Africa, where beauty is placed on what you can control. The Maasai tribe in Kenya focuses on how clean people are,and how stylish their piercings(穿孔)are. This tribe's culture is to be a brave fighter,so they will cut their skin with patterns in it to show that they are strong. If you don't look fierce, you are not beautiful. Other countries like North Korea and South Korea have their own unique views on beauty. In an interview, a woman who has lived in both North Korea and South Korea claims that beauty in North Korea is based more on your ability to be a good woman and wife. She says that women in North Korea are less concerned about fashion and beauty in the physical sense. She says they did have a time when big eyes were a big deal and everyone wanted to get double eyelid surgery. This is something extreme and could perhaps be influenced by Western culture. But don't you think the idea of getting surgery done to look more attractive is crazy? 5.What does the underlined word “vacillating”in Paragraph 1 probably mean? Even for those with a happy family life, home can sometimes feel more taxing than work. In a new study, researchers at Penn State University found significantly and consistently lower levels of cortisol (皮质醇) released in response to stress, in a majority of subjects when they were at work compared to when they were at home. This was true for both men and women, and parents and people without children. Both men and women showed less stress at work. But women were more likely to report feeling happier there. Men were more likely to feel happier at home. Experts say there are other reasons why work is less stressful than home for many. “Paid work is more valued in society,” says Sarah Damaske, the lead researcher on the study. “Household work is boring and not particularly rewarding.” We get better at our job with time and the increased competence means less stress and more rewards. Yet none of us, no matter how long we've been doing it, ever truly feels like an expert at parenting or even at marriage. The support and friendship of coworkers also offer stress relief. At home, meanwhile, stress spreads and accumulates quickly. “That's the reason why most housewives wish they were the bread earners,” Dr. Damaske says. Much of the advice to families and couples includes the warning to leave work stress at the office and even to change our mindset from work to home, for example, a walk around the block. The recent findings, though, suggest our home life, not our attitude, might be due for some change. 13.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “taxing”? D.Most people felt more stress at home. D。 15.What do most people think of work at the office? And I suppose high school friends are the friends you'll build the strongest relationships with. __2__ Whether it is the bad haircut or the braces (牙箍) you wear, your high school friends help you through it all. They tell you that you look wonderful when you can not go out in public with that hairdo. __3__ They understand the most about you. High school friends know you better than anyone else. They can just look at you and know how you're feeling. You cannot hide much from them. __4__ And they'd rather help deal with the problem at hand than let it go. So even when you don't want to hear it, prepare yourself — because they're not going to stop trying until you're back to your normal self. They make for the best reunion. Reunions are harder to organize when friends live across the country. However, with high school friends, it's easy to enjoy the time together — you can often pick up just where you left off, no matter how long ago that was. Friendships can be hard to keep. __5__ A.We could depend on our friends all the time. B.They are with you through your embarrassing stages. C.They can sense something is off when you're the slightest bit strange. D.For me, I often think about my fantastic group of high school friends. E.They build up your selfconfidence to get you through each tough situation. F.Let's pray the flower of friendship would always bloom brightly in our hearts.
