However, to ornithologists (鸟类学家) it is a series of sounds which when combined, forms a unique language. These tiny birds are the first nonhuman species known to communicate using language. Before exploring the language of the babbler, it is important to define what that means. According to language experts, communication or exchange of information can mean various things----from the aggressive roar of a lion to the never stopping buzzing of honeybees. Language, on the other hand, is the ability to piece together phonemes----letters like p, a, b, and t. The sounds are meaningless on their own, but when strung together in different arrangements, they transform into meaningful words. For example, b, a, t can be rearranged to form “bat”, “tab” or simply “at”. The research that was led by Dr. Andy Russell, identified fifteen distinct calls that the birds make. Two, in particular, were of great interest because they seemed to share similar sounds that had been rearranged. The first is the “flight” call, which is heard when the babblers are flying over their Australian habitat. It is a short, squeaky (短促尖叫的) sound that the scientists represented as “AB”. The other, known as the “prompt” call, is made when the birds arrive at the nest to feed their chicks. It is similar to the first call except it has one more sound in the beginning, which happens to be the last sound of the flight call. The scientists are still puzzled about one thing. Why did the babblers decide to communicate using this primitive language instead of belting out complex constantly changing songs like other birds? Professor Russell speculates it could be that the smart birds figured out that rearranging sounds they already know to mean different things was easier than constantly creating songs with new sounds! 25. Over the course of three experiments on 35 young and healthy volunteers, researchers in a new study measured brain activity during two continuous nights of sleep. Sasaki and colleagues performed a series of lab tests by stimulating the left and then the right hemisphere(大脑的半球)with sounds. On the second night, there wasn’t any difference in reactions to tests between the left and right hemispheres, even during deep sleep. This suggests that there is a first-night-only effect specifically in one hemisphere of the brain during deep sleep, the authors conclude. The way participants responded to the sleep lab tests points to the potential for the brain to be on high alert for danger during the first night in unfamiliar surroundings. While this may be bad news for business travelers who regularly make brief overnight trips, it may not be as troublesome for people who go away for longer periods of time, Sasaki added by email. “Frequent travel may lead to unrestful sleep,” Sasaki said. “But if you stay for a few days at the same place, your sleep might catch up.” Some birds have been found to actually sleep with one eye open and one side of the brain awake when they’re in a dangerous setting, and some marine mammals have similar abilities, the authors note. But the new study focuses on healthy volunteers but not people with insomnia(失眠) or other sleep disorders, the authors note. “The clinical implications haven’t been confirmed at the moment,” Finan, a psychiatry(精神医学)and behavioral health researcher said. “However, the level of specificity provided by these analyses could be an important first step in understanding what sleep disorders like insomnia arise from, which is thought to be driven in many patients by continuing having a lot of worries.” . 32.
