Is that you?” The woman speaking to me at the baseball game looked a little familiar.“Marci?” I asked.“It is you!”she cried out, smiling broadly.“It's good to see you again!” It was good to see Marci, too.Off and on during the past few decades,I've wondered about her.I almost tried to search for her a few years ago after talking to a friend who had indicated that the 1990s had been pretty rough for Marci. So meeting her at the baseball game was really a surprise. We spent a few minutes talking about our lives—the good old,bad old days. Then Marci grew quiet for a moment.“You know,Joe,” she said,“I've always wanted to tell you how...how...sorry I am for the way I treated you.You must have been hurt both physically and mentally.”I was a little embarrassed.I turned and looked at her.“It's OK,” I said,“No big deal!”“But I was such a jerk,” she continued.Yes you were,I thought.“We were both pretty young,” I smiled,“I know,” she said.“It's just always bothered me,remembering how mean I was to you.And I've wanted to tell you that I'm sorry.” The expression on her face was warm and sincere. And there was something in her eyes—it looked a lot like relief.“OK,” I said.“Apology accepted!” Overcome by the sweetness of the moment,I reached an arm around her and gave her a quick hug.Just then, the crowd erupted with a huge cheer, and Marci and I both returned our attention to the game.By the time I looked over to where she had been, she was gone. But the warm, wonderful feeling of our brief exchange was still there, and continues to this day whenever I think about it. It isn't enough to just say “I'm sorry” and “You're forgiven”.But when those words are truly felt and sincerely expressed, they can open the door to miracles of the heart.Forgiveness can bring peace to an injured soul—even years after the fact.Even at a baseball game. 1.What kind of life did Marci live during the late 20th century according to the passage? Probably not.Why is that? According to a new study published in the journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to skip the temporary darkness when we blink. It can keep visual information for a short period of time and then put it together to form an image without interruption. In order to understand how this works,a group of scientists at the German Primate Center and the University Medical Center Gottingen in Germany conducted an experiment. In the study, the participants were asked to look at patterns on a screen whose direction could be interpreted in different ways, such as horizontally(水平地) or vertically(垂直地).When one pattern was about to disappear and the next one was about to come, the participants had to indicate the direction that the next pattern would appear. The researchers found that when the directions of two patterns didn't match, the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction. “The medial prefrontal cortex(额叶皮层) adjusts current visual information with previously obtained information, and thus enables us to perceive the world with more stability, even when we briefly close our eyes to blink,” Caspar Schwiedrzik explained in Science Daily. He is the first author of the study and also a scientist at the German Primate Center. 5.We don't miss anything when blinking because our brain can ________. A.deal with the missing image B.remember all that we see C.imagine what our eyes miss D.put our pieces of memory together A [推理判断题。根据第二段第一句“According to a new study published in the journal Current Biology in September, our brain has the ability to skip the temporary darkness when we blink.” 6.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.Our brain. B.Visual information. C.Current Biology. D.The temporary darkness. 根据第二段第二句“It can keep visual information for a short period of time and then put it together to form an image without interruption”可知,大脑可以在短时间内保存视觉信息,然后将其组合在一起形成不中断的图像。 7.What do we know about the experiment? A.The two patterns appear at the same time. B.Visual memory can be more activated by similarity. C.Participants can interpret patterns differently. D.The different directions activated visual memory. 根据第四段中的“when the directions of two patterns didn't match, the area in our brain which is responsible for visual memory was activated. This same area showed less activity when two patterns were in the same direction”可知,当两个模式的方向不一致时,则掌握视觉记忆的大脑区域被激活;当两种模式在同一方向时,则这个区域显示出较少的活动。 8.What would be the best title for this passage? A.The Brain's Structure B.The Brain's Activated Patterns C.The Brain's Special Skill D.The Brain's Orientation C Ⅱ.完形填空 (2019·合肥市第一次教学质量检测)Greenberg was a lucky guy to enter Columbia University on a full scholarship. But just before junior year,Greenberg's __1__ changed. One day his vision “__2__ up” and later he was diagnosed(诊断) with glaucoma(青光眼).Then doctors operated on Greenberg's eyes.__3__, the surgery didn't work.Greenberg was going blind. He was so __4__ that he refused to see anyone. For years now,I've been wanting to sell our home, the place where my husband and I raised our kids. But to me,this house is much more than just a building. In the front room, there's a wall that has hundreds of pencil lines, marking the progress of my children's growth. Every growth stage is marked in grey, with each child's name and the date when they were measured.Of all the objects and all the memories,it's this one thing in a home that's the hardest to leave behind.Friends I know have returned home after work only to discover their wall of heights has been freshly painted over.A new paint job wouldn't normally be greeted by tears, but erasing that evidence of motherhood hurts more than it should. Our kids grow in so many ways, but the wall is physical evidence of their progress, right there for everyone to see. Over the years,I've talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall behind when I moved, even though the last marks were made 10 years ago when my kids stopped growing. So one day, while I was at work,my children decided to do something about it. They hired Jacquie Manning,a professional photographer whose work is about capturing(捕捉) the beautiful things in life, from clear lakes and skies to diamonds and ballgowns(晚礼服). She came to our house while I was at work, and over several hours, took photos of the hundreds of drawings and lines, little grey fingerprints(指纹),and old marks.Somehow, she managed to photograph all those years of memories perfectly. Afterwards, she put all the photos together into one image, transforming them into a beautiful history of my family. Three weeks later,my children's wonderful gift made its way to me-a lifesize photo of the pencil lines and fingerprints that represents entire lifetimes of love and growth. 1.The underlined phrase “blew me away” in Paragraph 1 probably means “________”. Japanese researchers followed 1,083 adults for five years, splitting them into three categories based on how quickly they ate: slow, normal, and fast. They also answered a questionnaire at the beginning of the study, sharing their diet, physical activity, and medical history. In the beginning, none of the volunteers had metabolic syndrome(新陈代谢综合征)-meaning at least three risk factors—which can lead to health problems like heart conditions and diabetes. When the participants reported back five years later,84 had been diagnosed(诊断) with metabolic syndrome-and their eating speed was a major predictor, according to the results in the journal Circulation. The fast eaters were 89 percent more likely to have metabolic syndrome than slow and normal eaters.Just 2.3 percent of slow eaters received the diagnosis, compared to 11.6 percent of fast eaters. But that's not all.Fast eaters also saw more weight gain, larger waistlines, and higher blood sugar levels than slow eaters. The researchers say gobbling makes it easier not to take notice of fullness before your body has a chance to signal you to stop.“So when people eat fast they are more likely to overeat,” said Takayuki Yamaji,MD,study author and cardiologist at Hiroshima University in Japan in a statement. Previous research backs up the weight benefits of slow eating, too. One study of New Zealand women found fast eaters have higher body-mass indexes(指数),and a Chinese study found that both healthy and fat men ate less when told to chew 40 times instead of 15 times before swallowing.Initial research even suggests chewing your food longer could burn more calories-up to about 1,000 extra every month. 5.What are the participants divided by? 根据第三段中的“Fast eaters also saw more weight gain, larger waistlines, and higher blood sugar levels than slow eaters.” 7.What does the underlined word “gobbling” in Paragraph 4 best mean? A.Tasting slowly. B.Digesting quickly. C.Eating greedily. D.Cooking carefully. 根据第四段中的“when people eat fast they are more likely to overeat”可知,吃得快可能会让人吃得过多。 8.What does the last paragraph tell us? A.The importance of eating speed. B.The advantage of eating slowly. C.The result of a Chinese study. D.Fast eating and overeating.
