B The kids in this village wear dirty clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts (棚屋) made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can sing the English letters, and some can make words. The key to their success: 20 tablet computers (平板电脑) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S. group called One Laptop Per Child. The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing the project say they’re already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten (幼儿园),” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia program. The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The tablet’s camera couldn’t save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment in Ethiopia. With his tablet, Kelbasa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own. “Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable,” said Keller. The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,” where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic, Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs. 24. How does the Ethiopia program benefit the kids in the village? A. It trains teachers for them. B. It contributes to their self-study. C. It helps raise their living standards. D. It provides money for building schools. 25. What can we infer from Keller’s words in Paragraph 3? A. They need more time to analyze the results. B. More children are needed for the research. C. He is confident about the future of the project. D. The research should be carried out in kindergartens. 26. It amazed Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could _________. A. draw pictures of animals B. learn English words quickly C. write letters to researchers D. make phone calls to his friends 27. What is the aim of the project? A. To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs. B. To assist Ethiopians in learning their first language. C. To make Amharic widely used in the world. D. To help Ethiopian kids learn to read in English. C A glass a day keeps obesity at bay. Wine has always been thought to cause weight gain because of its high sugar content, but new research suggests a glass a day could form part of a diet. Looking at past studies they found that, while heavy drinkers do put on weight, those who drink in moderation can actually lose weight. A scientist for the research team at Navarro University in Spain says, “Proper drinking may be more likely to protect against, rather than promote, weight gain.” An official organization reviewed the findings and agreed with most of the conclusions, particularly that present data do not clearly show if proper drinking increases weight. Boston University’s Dr. Harvey Finkel found that the reasons relating alcohol to changes in body weight are not properly understood. His team pointed out the strong protective effects of proper drinking on the risk of getting conditions like diabetes (糖尿病), which relate to increasing obesity. Some studies suggest that even very fat people may be at lower risk of diabetes if they are moderate drinkers. The group says alcohol provides energy that is quickly absorbed into the body and is not stored in fat, and that this process could explain the differences in its effects from those of other foods. They agree that future research should be directed towards assessing the roles of different types of alcoholic drinks, taking drinking patterns into consideration. For now there is little evidence that drinking small to moderate amounts of alcohol on a regular basis increases one’s risk of becoming too fat. What’s more, a study three years ago suggested that a chemical found in grapes and red wine, destroys fat cells. 28. Who is the passage intended for? A. Those who have a drinking habit. B. Those who produce wine. C. Those who sell alcohol. D. Those who wish to quit drinking. 29. What does the phrase “in moderation” in the first paragraph refer to? A. Excitedly. B. Carefully. C. Frequently. D. Properly. 30. What can we learn from the passage? A. The research found proper drinking has a strong protective effect. B. The specific roles of different types of alcoholic drinks are clear. C. Present data clearly show that moderate drinking increases weight. D. A chemical found in grapes increases the risk of becoming fat. 31. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows? A. How to do some easy experiments. B. How to prove the finding mentioned above. C. How to make wine in a healthy way. D. How to reduce the calories contained in wine. D Organic food, grown without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers (消费者) have been willing to pay up to twice as much for organic goods. However, a study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren’t necessarily more nutritious (有营养的), and they’re no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either. The latest results suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crystal Smith-Spangler from Stanford. For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues did a review of two kinds of research, including 17 studies that compared health results between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats. While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a healthy fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were very small. Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn’t always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. Experts state that whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste. 32. The new research questions whether organic food ________. A. should replace traditional food B. has been overpriced by farmers C. is really more nutritious and healthier D. is grown with less harmful chemicals 33. Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found that ________. A. organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease B. traditional food was grown with more natural methods C. there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food D. both organic and traditional food they examined were safe 34. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage? A. Organic milk and chicken. B. Organic chicken and pork. C. Traditional chicken and pork. D. Traditional fruit and vegetables. 35. What is the author’s attitude toward organic food? A. Enthusiastic. B. Doubtful C. Unconcerned. D. Positive. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 36 This was not because the woods and fields were always far away, but because they were too far from the city to permit people to make a day trip between morning and nightfall. 37 He decided to turn his little school into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small quantity of money. The idea was a success. A few years later, the school house was much too small to hold the many young people who wanted to stay there. 38 This was the first hostel (招待所). Today, young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostel and get to know each other. When young people arrive at the hostel, they have only to show their cards of membership in a hostel organization in their own country. 39 Often, at the evening meal, a group of boys and girls from various parts of the country or world will happen to meet at the same hostel. They may put their food together and prepare a dinner with many kinds of dishes. Sometimes a program will be organized after the meal with dances, songs, or short talks followed by a question period. 40 For this reason, a few weeks spent “hostelling” can be just as useful a part of one’s education as classes in school. A. As a result, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. B. People can stay in the hostel if they brought enough equipment with them. C. For years, children in the industrial areas of Europe seldom left their cities to see the beauties of the countryside. D. This card will permit them to stay in a hostel all over the world for very low prices. E. In 1970, a young German school master had an idea which changed this situation. F. One can learn a lot about other places, just by meeting people from those places G. More and more young people went to the hostel for summer holidays. When my parents were alive, they were not very rich. As for the question, there are two different opinions. 38% of the students are for the idea that parents should accompany students studying. That is because parents can do such housework as making delicious dinner and washing clothes for students, which in turn allow students to have more time to study and have a rest. On the contrary, 62% of the students go against the former viewpoint. In their opinion, parents quitting the job to accompany students will add economic pressure to family. Besides, students will be under mental press. In addition, there is no chance to develop their independence. As far as I am concerned, I am for the latter viewpoint. In the long run, not only should students study well but also learn the ability to live independently. Only by living alone can students have the chance to grow up.查看更多
