Same Technology as $ 3.500 Hearing Aids He evaluated all the high-priced digital hearing aids on the market and then created his own affordable version-called MD Hearing Aid AIR.‎ for its virtually invisible, lightweight appearance. This doctor-designed digital hearing aid delivers clear sound all day long and the soft flexible ear domes are so comfortable that you won't realize you are wearing them. This new digital hearing aid is packed with the features of its $3,500 competitors at a small part of the cost. Now most people with hearing loss are able to enjoy crystal clear, natural sound-in a crowd, on the phone, in the wind -- without "whistling" and annoying background noise. The decision marks a stunning reversal just three months after Amazon crowned Long Island City, Queens, one of two winners of a highly public nationwide search in which hundreds of communities vied for the tech group's investment. By losing Amazon, New York will sacrifice an estimated 25,000 jobs-paying an average annual salary of $150,000 each-as well as a signature victory in a broader effort to transform the financial services capital into a technology hub to rival Silicon Valley. Amazon's about-face is a particular setback for governor Andrew Cuomo, who led the company's recruitment and touted its November decision as the city's biggest-ever economic development win. At the same time, it appeared to confirm the dominance of a progressive wing of the Democratic party, led by the recently elected Queens representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who was suspicious of Amazon's arrival. Ms, Ocasio-Cortez questioned its opposition to organized labor and whether local citizens would benefit from its jobs. Amazon officials said the decision to abandon New York had been taken recently, and would not discuss what role, if any, Jeff Bezos, the company's founder, played in the move. "The commitment to building a headquarters required positive, collaborative relationships with state and local officials who will be supportive over the long term," Amazon wrote in a blog post. "While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us." Amazon said it did not intend to reopen the search process for a replacement. Instead , company officials expect to spread the jobs they planned to locate in Queens around existing Amazon facilities in Boston, San Diego, Vancouver and the Bay Area.‎ 2. Amazon drew back from setting up a satellite headquarters in that ______ .‎ A. there is a widespread public objection. B. the political climate is favorable to revolution. C. a number of state and local politicians changed their tunes. D. Long Island lost the fierce competition for the investment.‎ 3. The underlined word " about-face" is closest in meaning to ______ .‎ A. victory B. reversal C. investment D. support 4. Which of the following is true according to the passage? ______ .‎ A. Amazon reoriented itself from a financial center to a technology hub. B. Jeff Bezos was to blame for his mistakes in decision-making. ‎ C. Andrew Cuomo had prejudice against Amazon's new headquarters plan. D. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez was cautious in response to Amazon's plan.‎ 1. What is the passage mainly concerned with? ______ ‎ A. Amazon relocate its new facilities in Queens. B. Amazon drops plans for headquarters in New York City. C. Amazon seeks to cooperate with state and local politicians. D. Amazon is under fire for withdrawing the plan for a facility.‎ D Teenagers who talk on the cell phone a lot, and hold their phones up to their right ears, score worse on one type of memory test. That's the finding of a new study. That memory impairment might be one side effect of the radiation (放射线) that phones use to keep us connected while we're on the go. Nearly 700 Swiss teens took part in a test of figural memory. This type helps us remember abstract (抽象的) symbols and shapes, explains Milena Foerster. The teens took memory tests twice, one year apart. Each time, they had one minute to remember 13 pairs of abstract shapes. Then they were shown one item from each pair and asked to match it with one of the five choices. The study volunteers also took a test of verbal memory. That's the ability to remember words. The two memory tests are part of an intelligence test. The researchers also surveyed the teens on how they use cell phones. And they got call records from phone companies. The researchers used those records to figure out how long the teens were using their phones. This allowed the researchers to work out how big radiation exposure (接触) each person could have got while talking. A phone user's exposure to the radiation can differ widely. Some teens talk on their phones more than others. People also hold their phones differently. If the phone is close to the ear, more radiation may enter the body, Foerster notes. Even the type of network signal that a phone uses can matter. Much of Switzerland was using an older "second-generation" type of cell phone networks, the study reports. Many phone carriers (通讯公司) have moved away from such networks. And more companies plan to update their networks within the next few years. The teens' scores in the figural memory tests were roughly the same from one year to the next. But those who normally held their phones near the right ears, and who were also exposed to higher levels of radiation, scored a little bit worse after a year. No group of teens showed big changes on the verbal memory test. Why might one type of memory be linked to cell phone use, but not another? Foerster thinks it could have to do with where different memory centers sit in the brain. The site that deals with the ability to remember shapes is near the right ear.‎ 2. The underlined word "impairment" in Paragraph 1 most probably mean " ______ ".‎ A. association B. damage C. pattern D. improvement 3. According to Paragraph 2, which of the following is TRUE? ______ ‎ A. The teens took two types of memory tests four times in total. B. The teens needed to report the average time spent on their phones. C. Researchers paid little attention to the teens' habits of using phones. D. The teens' ability of remembering words is shown in figural memory test.‎ 4. What can we infer from Paragraph 3? ______ ‎ A. How people hold their phones has no effect on their bodies. B. Phone users can make more money with new networks. C. The cell phone network type has little to do the cell phone use. D. Radiation levels are affected by the cell phone network types.‎ 1. What might be the best title for the text? ______ ‎ A. Cell phone use and safety warnings B. Facts about cell phone use at school C. Dangerous levels of cell phone use among teens D. Teen's cell phone use linked to memory problems 二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)‎ It's every parent's worst nightmare. (1) . Now scientists say they have found a better way to wake up sleeping youngsters. Researchers in the US have discovered that playing a child a recording of their mother's voice is about three times more likely to wake them than a traditional alarm. Moreover, they can escape more quickly. Dr Gary Smith, a co-author of the research from the Nationwide Children's hospital in Ohio and his colleagues report how they compared the effects of four different smoke alarms on 176 children aged between 5 and 12 years old. (2) . While one alarm featured a high-pitched beep, the other three featured the voice of the child's mother calling either the child's name, giving instructions such as: "Wake up! Leave the room!", or both. Each child slept in a lab-based room that resembled a real bedroom, and was shown how to escape from the room before they went to bed. They each experienced all four alarms-the order of which was chosen randomly. (3) . About 90% of children woke for a vocal alarm compared with just over 53% for the traditional alarm. In addition, the children shook off their sleep faster, with a median(中位数) value of two seconds for the voice alarm compared with more than two and a half minutes for the traditional alarm. (4) . Prof Niamh Nic Daéid, director of the Leverhulme Research Centre at the University of Dundee, said the research supported by her team found a human voice combined with a low-frequency pulsing tone was far more effective in waking children than a traditional high-pitched alarm. (5) , which might have made them more responsive to an alarm, while more work was needed to explore whether other familiar sounds, such as a dog barking, might also prove effective in waking up children. A. But she noted that the latest study involved children sleeping in a location other than their own bedroom B. But she said it was important to look at developing better alarms C. None of them had hearing difficulties or were taking any medication that affected their sleep D. The results show that voice alarms appear to be more effective than high-pitched beeps E. What's more, it does so faster and is linked to a quicker escape F. There's a fire in the house; the alarms are beeping, but the children are in deep sleep G. Similarly, escape times were longer in the cases of the beeping alarms 2. ‎ A. A B. B C. C D. D E. E F. F G. G 3. ‎ A. A B. B C. C D. D E. E F. F G. G 4. ‎ A. A B. B C. C D. D E. E F. F G. G 5. ‎ A.
