To be exact, thoughts of the future have kept me up countless nights and made me worry enough to do poorly on more than one test. Because of this, words of wisdom are a source of comfort. Steve Jobs gave a speech to Stanford’s graduating class in 2005 and his words resound repeatedly in my mind whenever I think about my future.‎ It wasn’t always like that, though. It started when I became a junior, when college came into view. It’s the first big step to making your life your own. So when Jobs discussed his life as a student, some fears were eased. He, too, felt the need to attend college to make something of himself. He faced what many are extremely afraid of: uncertainty. His lack of understanding caused him to stop attending college and focus on what he felt was important. His story had a happy ending, of course, since he certainly turned out well. ‎ This doesn’t mean that students shouldn’t attend college, but rather that they shouldn’t worry so much. You’ll get where you need to go, even if your path is a bit more winding(蜿蜒的)than you’d like.‎ Jobs talked about the hardships in his work. His love of his work helped him carry on and he got where he was meant to be, which restates the point: don’t panic.‎ One particular part of his speech stayed with me. Steve Jobs quoted(引用)the saying “Stay hungry, stay foolish” and it has become my motto. Staying foolish is realizing that you are still a fool, no matter how much you’ve learned or experienced. There is always more to explore. Staying hungry is wanting to find those things about which you are still uneducated.‎ Steve Jobs’s level of success is attainable, and I aim to prove that. With the will power to go into the world living every day like it’s my last and allowing the future to take care of itself, I will do great things. In the last moments of my life, I’ll be proud of what I have done and hope to have all the wisdom a person could wish for.‎ ‎21. It is suggested in Paragraphs 1 and 2 that _________.‎ A. Steve Jobs didn’t attend college B. Steve Jobs failed because of his decision C. the author is a college student D. the author cares much about his future ‎22. What did the author gain from Jobs’s speech?‎ A. Courage to drop out of school. B. Confidence in defeating Jobs.‎ C. Interest in computer industry. D. Bravery to face uncertainties.‎ ‎23. What did NOT Steve Jobs encourage students to do in his speech?‎ A. Have the desire to learn more. B. Be content with what they know.‎ C. Stay calm in the face of hardships. D. Be modest so as to learn more.‎ ‎24. The passage is mainly about _________.‎ A. the wisdom drawn from a speech B. the most impressive quotation in life C. a memorable meeting with Jobs D. an experience of a speech B ‎ For many years there's been a debate about rewarding our children. Does it work? Is it effective?‎ Some people think we should establish a standard with our kids and give them something for meeting this standard as a reward. Punishment is given out in much the same way, but it’s ‎ used when certain standards of performance, behavior, etc. have not been met. Kids will often become more dutiful when threatened with punishment, and work harder when promised a valuable reward. The problem is what happens when you aren’t around. ‎ To develop responsible, self-disciplined(自律) kids, parents need to promote certain ideas. One of these ideas is that everyone pitches in and helps in your family. Another idea is that there can be enjoyment in doing any task if we choose to make it so. When a task is for a worthy cause (our family can enjoy the house more because I helped clean it), this message can have a big impact. ‎ This is how we help our kids develop a sense of responsibility. When our children develop this responsibility, they’ll be more disciplined, and they’ll control their emotions better. When we give rewards to our kids, we reduce the sense of responsibility. We also create children who may temporarily perform to a certain standard, but who aren’t likely to continue the performance without the carrot hanging in front of them. ‎ ‎“Rewards and punishment can change behavior for a while, but they cannot change the person who engages in the behavior,” said Alfie Kohn, author of Punished by Rewards. “Good values have to be grown from the inside out.” Parents can help give their children a sense of shared responsibility and discipline which can last a life time. The real rewards that your children receive will be their readiness for the complex and demanding world that waits for them—a world that rewards those who have learned the secrets of discipline responsibility. So keep those shiny rewarding to yourself, and let your kids find their own rewards. ‎ ‎25. According to the passage, when children are threatened with punishment, ______.‎ ‎ A. they may lose interest in their work ‎ B. they may appear to be well-behaved ‎ C. they may change to another person ‎ D. the results will be worse than usual ‎26. The underlined part “the carrot” in Paragraph 4 probably refers to _____.‎ ‎ A. rewards B. aims C. apologies D. doubts ‎27. According to the passage, Alfie Kohn would agree that parents should ______.‎ ‎ A. never pay attention to the way their children do things ‎ B. show their children how to behave by example ‎ C. never punish their children ‎ D. help their children establish good values ‎28. What’s the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. Do you often reward your children?‎ ‎ B. Should parents reward their children?‎ ‎ C. When should parents reward their children?‎ ‎ D. What can parents reward their children with?‎ C It has long been believed that drinking green tea is good for the memory. Now researchers have discovered how the chemical properties(特性) of China's favorite drink affect the generation of brain cells, providing benefits for memory and spatial(空间的) learning. “There has been plenty of scientific attention on its use in helping prevent cardiovascular(心血管) diseases, but now there is evidence that its chemical properties may affect cellular mechanisms(细胞结构) in the brain,” said Professor Yun Bai. ‎ ‎ Professor Bai's team focused on the organic chemical EGCG, a key property of green tea. The team believed it can also have a beneficial effect against age-related degenerative(退化的) diseases. “We proposed that EGCG can improve learning by affecting the generation of neuron cells, a process known as neurogenesis,” said Bai. “We focused our research on the hippocampus, the part of the brain which processes information from short-term to long-term memory.” ‎ ‎ The team found that EGCG increases the production of neural progenitor cells, which can adapt, or differentiate, into various types of cells. The team then used laboratory mice to discover if this increased cell production gave an advantage to memory or spatial learning. “We ran tests on two groups of mice, one which had drunk EGCG and a control group,” said Bai. “First the mice were trained for three days to find a visible platform in their maze(迷宫). Then they were trained for seven days to find a hidden platform.”‎ ‎ The team found that the EGCG treated mice required less time to find the hidden platform. Overall the results showed that EGCG promotes learning and memory by improving object recognition and spatial memory. “We have shown that the organic chemical EGCG acts directly to increase the production of neural progenitor cells, both in glass tests and in mice,” concluded Bai.‎ ‎ “This helps us to understand the potential(潜能) for EGCG, and green tea which contains it, to help treat degenerative diseases and memory loss.”‎ ‎29. The new evidence suggests chemical properties __________.‎ ‎ A. in black tea may impact cellular mechanisms in the brain ‎ B. in green tea may affect cellular mechanisms in the brain ‎ C. in black tea may damage cellular mechanisms in the brain ‎ D. in green tea may damage memory and spatial learning ‎30. According to the passage, Professor Bai's team paid attention to _________. ‎ ‎ A. short-term and long-term memory ‎ B. the generation of neuron cells and hippocampus ‎ C. age-related degenerative diseases ‎ D. the organic chemical EGCG and hippocampus ‎31. The team found that it took more time___________. ‎ ‎ A. for the EGCG treated mice to find the hidden platform ‎ B. for the EGCG treated mice to find the visible platform ‎ C. for the control mice to find the hidden platform ‎ D. for the control mice to find the visible platform ‎32. What might be the potential for EGCG?‎ ‎ A. To decrease the blood level. B. To improve the time memory.‎ ‎ C. To help treat memory loss. D. To cure degenerative diseases.‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题, 每小题 2 分, 满分 10 分) ‎ 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Creating a reader-friendly home A home filled with reading material is a good way to help kids become enthusiastic readers. What kind of books should you have? 33 If they’re too young to have a preference, your local librarian can offer suggestions about age-appropriate books.‎ Here are some other tips:‎ ‎ 34 ‎ Collect board books or books with mirrors and different textures(质地) for babies.‎ ‎ Preschoolers enjoy alphabet books, rhyming books, and picture books. Create a cozy reading corner, and encourage kids to use it by setting up "reading corner time" each day.‎ Keep it appealing. ‎ Make sure reading areas have good lighting. Just past there is an area between the Catering village and the toilets where you 'll find an exhibition of paintings all done by local artists. If you then go back past the Catering‎ ‎Village, on the left is this year's Craft Market. This is always a popular area of the festival, where you can admire the handwork of our talented exhibitors. As always, we have live bands playing on stage throughout the festival. The stage is just to the right of the entrance. As well as live music, we also add a special section for literature lovers this year. You'll be able to listen to a variety of authors reading from their latest works. You can also enjoy a new section that our talented group of actors will be performing modern plays.‎
