That is 40 Db higher than the safe hearing range for humans, which is 85 Db. Before this, the honor belonged to another Amazon-liver—the well-known screaming piha, which set a record of 116 Db.‎ Mario Cohn-Haft, one of the study's authors, first became familiar with the loud birds through his trips to the mountains of the Brazilian Amazon.” We could hear them all over the place; they're kind of the soundtrack of these forests,” says the researcher at Brazil's National Institute of Amazonian Research.“They give out these loud ringing sounds that sound like someone hitting metal, like a blacksmith.”‎ To find out how loud the white bellbird's sound actually was, Mario Cohn-Haft and Jeff Podos from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, walked to the mountains of the Amazon rainforests in northern Brazil in December 2018 and then again in February 2019. What they discovered was interesting The pigeon-sized white bellbirds began their courtship(求偶) with a slightly gentler scream that averages about 116 Db. Upon attracting their possible mate's attention, they increase their effort with the deafening “song”. What was strange was that the male began by singing its first note with its back to the female and then turned suddenly. "You see this bird spinning around, and he's got his beak(鸟喙) wide open, "Podos said. "And he makes the second note right in the place the female would have been if she had not been smart enough to back off.”‎ The scientists are not sure why the female birds continue to stay so close even when the males are singing at full pitch(音高). "Maybe they are trying to judge the male birds up close, though at the risk of suffering damage to their hearing systems, "Podos thinks. Since the unpleasant sound, which increases the male birds' risk of being discovered, was not one of the survival skills, the researchers concluded that the female birds might have a preference for louder male birds.‎ The white bellbirds' ability to scream loudly may be the result of their diet, which only consists of fruits. Though the sizes of some fruits are like golf balls, the birds swallow them wholly. Cohn-Haft and Podos believe the bird’s ability to open their beaks wide helps increase their sound.‎ ‎ However, the scientists are puzzled about how the birds, both male and female, can endure the loud songs without going deaf. 24. How do the male white bellbirds try to find a mate? A. By making some beautiful gestures B. By making a sound as loud as 125 Db C. By singing beautiful songs to a possible mate D. By hitting metal with their beaks to make a sound 25. What did Jeff Podos find strange about the male white bellbirds? A. They sang more than one note during the courtship B. They began their courtship with a slightly gentler scream C. They got their beaks wide open when giving out a sound D. They made the first courtship sound not facing the females 26. What is the last but one paragraph mainly about? A. How animals can make louder sounds B. What the white bellbird mainly feeds on ‎ ‎ C. Why the white bellbird can make such a sound D. Why the white bellbird usually swallows fruits 27. What does the underlined word"endure" in the last paragraph mean? ‎ A. Stand B.Record C. Produce D. Replace C Rainbow-coloured rubbish is the colourful waste created by a Swedish city with a unique recycling system.Like many cities in Sweden, Eskilstuna has an impressive recycling record. It met the EU's 2020 target of recycling 50% of waste many years ago. But almost everyone who lives here follows a strict recycling policy at home. People are expected to sort their household waste into seven separate categories, including food, textiles, cartons and metal. But what really makes the system stand out is the bright colour code.‎ The reason for this becomes clear at the city's recycling plant. The bags arrive all jumbled up(混乱) because they're collected altogether, once a fortnight from outside people's houses. But thanks to those bright colours, scanners can select the bags and separate them efficiently. The foodwaste in green bags is processed on site into slurry(浆)to make biogas, which powers city's buses. One of the benefits of this method of recycling is that there is less cross-pollution, so more of the recycled waste can actually be used to make new things.‎ Like the rest of Sweden, Eskilstuna is committed to sending zero waste from its citizens to landfill(垃圾堆).Waste that cannot be recycled is incinerated at a local plant to generate electricity. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, but does create greenhouse gases. As countries around the world try to improve their recycling rates, some may look to Eskilstuna as an example to follow—as long as they think they can persuade their citizens to get busy sorting at home.‎ ‎28.How do people in Eskilstuna follow a strict recycling policy?‎ A.They recycle waste at their homes. ‎ B.They send waste to recycling plants.‎ C.They spray waste with colorful paints.‎ D.They pack sorted waste with color bags.‎ ‎29.What is the advantage of the bright colour code?‎ A.It avoids cross-pollution entirely.‎ B.The waste can be stored in a fixed site.‎ C.The bags take on a colorful look.‎ D.The bags can be easily classified.‎ ‎30.What does the underlined word 'incinerated' in the last paragraph probably mean?‎ A.Burnt. B.Broken. C.Buried. D.Wrapped.‎ ‎31.Which would be the best title for the passage?‎ A.Tips on how to sort household waste B.A Swedish city's recycling efforts C.Measures to collect messy waste bags D.A new policy for conservation D Battling coronavirus is an experience that will forever be etched(铭刻)in my mind. I had what's considered a mild(温和的)case, but this virus is cruel. Now that I've recovered, I'm sharing my story because I want people to take this situation seriously.‎ My boyfriend and I have been trying to trace our steps back to where we first came into contact with coronavirus, and we think it was the night we went out to celebrate his sister-in-law's 40th birthday in early March. We went to a Mexican restaurant on Long Island that Friday night, and we shared lots of laughs and food.‎ We didn't think anything of it at the time, of course. The news was just beginning to report the spread of COVID‎-19 in America, so it wasn't exactly at the forefront of my mind. Looking back now, I think that must have been the start of it all. My boyfriend, Luis, began showing symptoms on Monday, but we assumed it was a typical cold. He works from home, so we figured it would just blow over. He had body aches and a minor fever for five days, but it didn't seem a cause for concern. Then it took me down.‎ My symptoms began on Monday, March 16. It had been a week since Luis had been sick. It all began with a low fever, about 99 to 100 degrees. I felt really weak, but I still went to work. By the day's end, I told my boss I had to leave. At this point, coronavirus had begun to take over New York, ‎ so I was told to work from home. On Tuesday, the headache started. It was so intense that I had to lie down—it was too difficult to keep my head up.‎ By the end of the week, I knew something was off. This wasn't what a typical illness felt like. Everything hurt. Luis and I decided it was time I seek medical help. My fever was only 100.6 degrees, but it felt like my skin was being pulled in opposite directions. My knees, hands, and even my earlobes hurt..‎ We went to nearby urgent care, where I filled out paperwork and waited for the doctor. After examining me, the doctor said he was certain I would test positive for coronavirus and that I'd contracted it from Luis.‎ That Saturday evening was the absolute worst. I didn't know how much worse I was going to get, and I feared the uncertainty of it all.‎ My fever finally broke the following Wednesday. I went to bed that night, and the next morning I awoke to a perfect 98.6-degree temperature that remained consistent. It was such a relief. Two days later, the health department called me with the news that I'd tested positive for COVID-19. By then, I was feeling mostly back to myself again, except for a lingering(继续存留)dry cough.‎ ‎32.What might be the source of the author and her boyfriend's coronavirus?‎ A.A birthday celebration. B.A mild coronavirus case.‎ C.A painful experience. D.A serious situation in USA.‎ ‎33.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean?‎ A.The news of COVID-19 was unknown to the author.‎ B.The author didn't take the spread of COVID-19 seriously.‎ C.The author didn't suffer from a low fever at the beginning.‎ D.The news of COVID-19 was just like that of a typical cold.‎ ‎34.In which case did the author ask for a leave?‎ A.After her symptoms began.‎ B.Once Luis had body aches.‎ C.Before the virus took her down.‎ D.When she could hardly sit up.‎ ‎35.What indicates the turning point of the author's illness?‎ A.The positive test result. B.A lingering dry cough.‎ C.A temperature return. D.The concern for herself.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 七选五。根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Prepare Yourself for a Better TOEFL Score The TOEFL is the most widely used language assessment exam for American colleges or universities. Many foreign students worry about taking the TOEFL because it is essential to meet their goals. 36 But a low test score will limit their choices for financial aid and admission to top schools. This wonderful wordless picture book is for little ones aged 5 to 10 years old. It tells the story of a new girl in school, Vanessa. The new girl spends her first day in school all by herself. She does not join in the games, neither does she take part in the classroom activities. As soon as school is over, she leaves quickly. On her way home, she is badly treated by another child. A girl in her class sees this incident. That girl spends the entire evening thinking about what she saw, and what she can do to help. In the morning of the next day, she has an idea. She goes to Vanessa’s home and walks with her to school. Friends join the walk, and soon the entire school is walking with Vanessa.‎ This wonderful picture book teaches children what to do if they see someone badly treated by others. And it also teaches children that a simple act of kindness can really help.‎
