For more than 30 years, they had been getting along very well. Then their good relationship broke. It began with a small thing, then bitter words, and then weeks of silence. One morning Farmer John woke up to find a stream between the two farms. “It must be Bob,” John thought. Then one day there was a knock on John’s door. He opened it to find a carpenter(木 匠) standing at the doorway. “I’m looking for a few days’ work,” the carpenter said. “I do have a job for you,” John said. “Look across the stream at that farm. That’s my neighbor Bob. He dug a stream between the two farms. I want you to build a fence—an - 3 - 8-foot fence. I don’t want to see his place or his face any more. I don’t have such a neighbor!” The carpenter said, “I think I know what to do, sir, and I’ll be able to do a job that pleases you.” Farmer John helped the carpenter get the materials(材料) ready and then he was off for the day. About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s eyes opened wide. There was no fence there at all! It was a bridge! And the neighbor, Bob, was coming across, with his hand outstretched(伸出). “Hi, John! You’re quite a fellow to build this bridge!” Then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. “I’m terribly sorry for what I have said and done. We should be good to each other.” said Farmer Bob. Then they turned to see the carpenter, who was ready to go. “No, wait! Stay a few days. A. What a Big Fence! B. A Strong Bridge C. Three Kind Men D. A Fence or a Bridge? B When we first gave our daughters (then 13 and 15 years old) cell phones for emergencies, we made them sign an agreement in which we strictly ruled where and when they could use their phones and even we could check their every text message. However, in less than a year, we lost control of the situation. There is a terrible reality that almost every teenager sends between 50 to 100 messages a day - some as many as 300, and 70% of teenagers admit hiding their online behavior from parents. According to a study, teenagers need as much sleep or more than they get as children - that's between 9 and 10 hours of sleep a night, but only 20% of them are getting it. When they don't get enough sleep, they perform poorly in school, feel very hungry, are more likely to have flu and are very emotional. Recently, we adopted a "check in at tuck in" (盖被子时交手机) rule at our house, an idea I learnt from a parenting expert. It is very simple. At bedtime, when we "tuck in" our children for the night, they must "check in" their phones. They will probably bargain like this: - 4 - "But I use it for my alarm clock." "I'll wake you up." "My friends might need me." "If there is an emergency, they can call the fixed phone and I'll wake you up." A few weeks ago, when I drove my younger daughter to a friend's house for a sleepover, she handed me her phone. "I guess I should check this in now, since you won't be there to tuck me in tonight. I'll call you from Ellie's phone if I need you." 26. The first paragraph that the writer writes is to______. A. show the writer's family life B. introduce the writer's two daughters C. advise to buy cell phones for children D. lead to the topic of the passage 27. The cell phones were bought for children in hope of_______. A. controlling their online behavior B. keeping in touch if something urgent happened C. replacing alarm clocks with cell phones D. working hard through the Internet 28. Which of the following is NOT caused by sleeping less? A. Feeling very hungry. B. Performing well in school. C. Being easy to have flu. D. Being very emotional. 29.What did the author finally do to control her daughters’ cellphones? A. signed a agreement B. check their every text message C. ruled where and when they could use their phones D. check in at tuck in 30. Which is probably the best title for the passage? A. How to Take Control of Children B. How to Help Children Sleep Well at Night C. How to Get Children off Cell Phones at Night D. How to Assist Children with Cell Phones C In American schools there is something called Homecoming Day. Many high schools and colleges with a football team have a homecoming game. This can be the most important event of the year except graduation day. Students plan homecoming day for many weeks in advance. Several days before Homecoming, students start to decorate the school. There are signs to wish luck to the team, and many other signs to welcome all the graduates. Many people still come to Homecoming twenty or thirty years after their graduation. The members of school clubs build booths( 摊 位 ) and sell lemonade, apples and sandwiches. Some clubs help to welcome visitors. During the day people like to look for teachers that they remember from long ago. Often they see old friends and they talk together about those happy years in school. Everyone soon comes to watch the football game. When the game is half over, the band comes onto the field and plays school songs. Another important moment is when the Homecoming Queen or King appears. All the students vote a most popular student Homecoming Queen or King. It is a great honor to be chosen. - 5 - Homecoming is a happy day, but it is not perfect unless the football team wins the game. Even if the team loses, the students still enjoy Homecoming. Some stay at the school to dance, and others go to a party. For everyone it is a day worth remembering. 31.The most important event of the year in high schools and colleges is ______. A. Homecoming B. the football game C. graduation D. winning the game 32. When do students begin to arrange everything for Homecoming? A. When the guests arrive. B. The day before Homecoming. C. M: Good afternoon, everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Pref. John Morris. I’ll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time these courses are offered, this room is very full. Why is that? Well, in order to use the English language, it’s very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure, and there are many. There are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you might wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing you don’t have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides there are shortcuts. Shortcuts? Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such Greek and French, you’ll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way. Knowing the rules will help you master a large number of words. This is probably the No. 1 reason why this class is so popular.
