I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s, with great interest. My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, Netherlands and West Germany. I have clear memories even today of going to Mumbai (孟买) airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew (工作人员). The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is especially afraid of flying. After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine (莱茵河), it was simply an unforgettable experience. I had a somber feeling on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience again, with the quality of their service. Being the first airline to take me abroad, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today, I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me, has always been a terrible and painful experience. Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I always have and always will look forward to. 21. What made the author so interested in traveling abroad? A. Growing up in India. B. When you see an apple or a piece of chocolate you know that these are things you can eat. You can also use other senses when you choose your food. You may like it because it smells good or because it tastes good. You may dislike some types of food because they do not look, smell or taste very nice. Different animals use different senses to find and choose their food. A few animals depend on only one of their senses while most animals use more than one sense. Although there are many different types of food, some animals spend their lives eating only one type. The giant panda eats only one particular type of bamboo (竹子). Other animals eat only one type of food even when given the choice. A kind of white butterfly will stay on the leaves of a cabbage, even though there are plenty of other vegetables in the garden. However, most animals have a more varied diet. The bear eats fruits and fish. The fox eats small animals, birds and fruits. The diet of these animals will be different depending on the season. Humans have a very varied diet. We often eat food because we like it and not because it is good for us. In countries such as France and Britain, people eat foods with too much sugar. This makes them overweight, which is bad for their health. Eating too much red meat and animal products, such as butter, can also be bad for the health. Choosing the right food, therefore, has become an area of study in modern life. 28. We can infer from the text that humans and animals _________. A. depend on one sense in choosing food B. are not satisfied with their food C. choose food in similar ways D. eat entirely different food 29. Which of the following eats only one type of food? A. The white butterfly. B. The small bird. C. The bear. D. The fox. 30. Certain animals change their choice of food when _________. A. the season changes B. the food color changes C. they move to different places D. they are attracted by different smells 31. We can learn from the last paragraph that _________. A. food is chosen for a good reason B. French and British food is good C. some people have few choices of food D. some people care little about healthy diet D There are an extremely large number of ants worldwide. Each individual (个体的) ant hardly weighs anything, but put together they weigh roughly the same as all of mankind. They also live nearly everywhere, except on frozen mountain tops and around the poles. For animals of their size, ants have been astonishingly successful, largely due to their wonderful social behavior. In colonies (群体) that range in size from a few hundred to tens of millions, they organize their lives with a clear division of labor. Even more amazing is how they achieve this level of organization. While we use sound and sight to communicate, ants depend primarily on pheromones (外激素)---- chemicals sent out by individuals and smelled or tasted by fellow members of their colony. When an ant finds food, it produces a pheromone that will lead others straight to where the food is. When an individual ant comes under attack or is dying, it sends out an alarm pheromone to warn the colony to prepare for a conflict as a defense unit. In fact, when it comes to the art of war, ants have no equal. They are completely fearless and will readily take on a creature much larger than themselves, attacking in large groups and overcoming their target. Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony that not only soldier ants but also worker ants will sacrifice their lives to help defeat an enemy. Behaving in this selfless and devoted manner, these little creatures have survived on Earth for more than 140 million years, far longer than dinosaurs. Because they think as one, they have a collective (集体的) intelligence greater than you would expect from its individual parts. 32. We can learn from the passage that ants are ____________. A. not willing to share food B. not found around the poles C. more successful than all other animals D. too many to achieve any level of organization 33. Ants can use pheromones for ______. A. escape B. communication C. warning enemies D. arranging labor 34. What does the underlined expression “take on” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. accept. B. employ. C. play with. D. fight against. 35. Which of the following contributes most to the survival of ants? A. Their behavior. B. Their size. C. Their number. D. Their weight. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(请把36—40题 填涂在答题卡的71—75题处) Muzak The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? 36 It's similar to the music you listen to, but it's not exactly the same. That's because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don't even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway. Quiet background music used to be called "elevator (电梯) music" because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in more and more places, and it has a new name "Muzak". About one-third of the people in America listen to "Muzak" everyday. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are more tired. 37 If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don't want their songs to be used as Muzak, but others are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? 38 Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. 39 Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries. 40 . They say it's boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak! A. Some people don't like Muzak. B. The music gives them extra energy. C. Music is playing in the background. D. Factory workers produce 13 percent more. E. Muzak tends to help people understand music better. F. They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used. G. Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world. It was pouring outside. (Text 10) W: I’m here today to tell you about my work. People ask me why I decided to start a new magazine. Well, I’ve been a journalist for many years working for newspapers and magazines in this country and abroad. I’ve always dreamt of starting my own magazine, not because I want to be rich but because I want to do something different. And now I’ve done it! It is different from other magazines. So what’s the magazine like? It’s the same size as the local weekly newspaper and in fact it looks very similar, but it doesn’t carry news and it doesn’t report on events as they happen. I think this is the important difference. You can buy it in all the usual places you would buy your local newspaper. The magazine itself is divided into three main parts; the first part is what’s on guide. There are music and film reviews, so you can decide what’s worth spending your time on. And it’s also got local bus timetables and useful telephone numbers. The second part is articles. We want to write about the lives of local people. They may be famous or not but they have all done something interesting such as developing a new business. There are several famous artists in the city, like Lisa Goodchild. We hope to interview a wide variety of people. And the third part is information about special events.查看更多
