When buildings fall down, search and rescue dogs help find trapped people. Dogs' amazing noses can pick up the smell of survivors. Now scientists have developed an electronic tool that does the same thing. It’s taking smell detection(探测) to a whole new level. The new invention is a sort of electronic nose, which can detect extremely low level s of many compounds(化合物)from people’s skin. This isn’t the first time engineers have developed such an object. Earlier models, however, have been bulky and expensive. They could not detect low levels of target compounds either. The new one is inexpensive and small enough to fit inside hand-held equipment. The electronic nose can detect extremely slight smell of more than one compound at the same time. "Being able to do this, in such a small object, is the significant discove ry,” says Sotiris E. Pratsinis, Professor of Process Engineering & Materials Science at th e Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. His team tested it in special spaces. They were like the small spaces where people might be trapped. Chemicals given off by the volunteers built up inside. The electronic equipment detected those compounds at unbelievably low levels. The results were good news for the research team. But they may be not for our four-legged friends, who could soon be out of a job. "Ideally, this technology could replace search and rescue dogs," Pratsinis says. Stephen Taylor, an electrical engineer, agrees that the new technology has some benefits over dogs. Still, he thinks it may be too soon to have our trusty friends retire. H e suspects, "I foresee that such an object could add to the fine work done by the dogs." Taylor also pointed out some potential limitations of the new invention. "E-noses are useful. But they can be very likely to be affected by unstable readings and interruption," he says. 24.Why does the author talk about dogs at the beginning? A. To catch the readers’ attention. B. To introduce the topic about e-noses. C. To show what search and rescue dogs do. D. To add background information for discussion. 25.Which of the following best explains "bulky" underlined in paragraph 2? A. Complex. B. Fragile. C. Large. D. Handy. 26.What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. How e-noses are made. B. How powerful e-noses are. C. What e-noses' working principle is. D. What differences between dogs and e-noses are. 27.What does Stephen Taylor mean? A. Dogs and e-noses could work together. B. Search and rescue dogs will retire soon. C. E-noses are more reliable than noses of clogs. D. Dogs are better at finding out trapped people. C You're at your favorite sporting event, watching your team play their hardest. Then all of a sudden you hear a cheer. This really seems to get the crowd fired up. But did anyone ever stop and think about how much time and effort it takes to be a cheerleader? Did you ever wonder how much sweat and practice go into cheerleaders being out there to cheer on their home team? Did you ever think these cheerleaders really have to have a good memory also? Not only are they athletes, but they are smart athletes, and the nicest people you will ever meet. Cheerleading is a sport because cheerleaders take part in all kinds of competitions, and there is danger involved. It is not a well-known fact that cheerleaders have to compete in a lot of different competitions. This is something a lot of people think is very easy, but in fact, taking part in the competitions is one of the hardest things that cheerleaders have to do. Competitions take a lot of time and effort. I have been to 37 different cheerleading competitions since the age of five. And in my opinion, competitions require quite a lot of physical and mental effort. Moreover, there are many dangerous activities involved. Jump is one of the most dangerous things in cheerleading. If you were to come down from the jump incorrectly, you could break a foot, or even a leg. Tumbling (翻筋斗) is another highly risky thing. During tumbling, concussions (脑震荡) may happen when you hit the head on the floor. I believe that cheerleading is a sport because cheerleaders compete in all kinds of competitions, there are many different skills to learn and master, and it can be a very dangerous sport. So the next time you are at your favorite sporting event listening to the cheers of the crowd, think about the preparation involved in this energetic sport. 28. What is the author's attitude to cheerleaders? A. She looks down upon them. B. She is doubtful about them. C. She gives them high praise. D. She pays no attention to them. 29. Why does the author mention her own experiences in Paragraph 2? A. To show how cheerleading competitions work. B. To prove cheerleading competitions are hard work. C. To prove the great influence of competitions on her. D. To show her important achievements in cheerleading. 30. What can be the best title for the passage? A. Why is cheerleading so popular? B. The moment you hear a cheer C. Your favorite sporting event D. Is cheerleading a sport? 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,共 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中 有两项为多余选项。 I have been a teacher for some years. They need not, because the technology is highly advanced. It can distinguish a human face with or without glasses. Tests show it has a precision rate of more than 99 percent. Some argue that the fingerprint or iris (虹膜) recognition system is perhaps more accurate than the facial recognition system. True, but for iris recognition, a person has to hold his or her head still and look at the camera, which is time-consuming and thus not suitable for public spaces such as subway stations. And the fingerprint recognition system is not so secure, as some people can cheat the system by copying and using the fingerprints of other people to enter or exit a station. The facial recognition system is rather mature. It collects people's facial images from different angles, instead of one, and therefore minimizes the chance of cheating. Actually, it is already being applied to many fields such as unlocking smartphones and computers. Besides, the facial recognition technology can also help the police to hunt escaped criminals in public spaces. However, the law says a citizen's photo should not be collected for commercial use without his/her permission. To avoid such legal risks, some measures should be taken before the collection of passenger information. First, companies must ensure the collected facial images are only for public convenience, and will never be used for commercial purposes, such as advertising. Second, companies must take necessary measures to make sure not even a single one is leaked or sold to any third party without the passenger's permission. Generally, advanced technologies can be used in public spaces, but people's rights must be respected, at least to avoid legal risks. 请同学们注意:为了方便老师手工评卷,写完一个要点后,请写上标注。 ……(要点 1)……(要点 2)……(要点 3)……(要点 4)。 ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ________ 每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分 英语参考答案 1-5 ABCBA 6-10 ACABC 11-15 CABAB 16-20 CBCBA 21-25 ACBBC 26-30 BACBD 31-35 EGCBF 概要写作: Paragraph 1:有些人怀疑人脸识别技术的准确性和可靠性,这是没有必要的,因 为该项技术非常先进。 The facial recognition technology is highly reliable and accurate.
