On a recent day, Mr. Kilo stops at one to visit Oscar Young. The two men hug. Inside his little shelter Mr. Young gets relief from cold nights on the streets. Mr. Kilo also visits Sweet-Pea, another friend who also lives in one of the little homes the artist built. She says it keeps her safe and protects her possessions. In the mornings, Mr. Kilo searches the streets for building materials. He gathers what he can and takes it to his studio. There, he puts the houses together. Empty coffee bags become roof material. A washing machine door and refrigerator part become windows. Nails, screws and the sticky glue hold all the pieces together. The artist also attaches a small electrical device to the house. The device is powered by the sun. Some of the people living on the streets once had normal houses of their own. But some of the people say they have learned to live with less and they are thankful to that man. Mr. Kilo says his work is not a social project. C Margaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building. She got trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have liked to go back to it , but the shifts (工作班次) are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.” So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just £ 90, before tax and insurance. “It’s better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work ‘unsocial hours’ should get a bit extra.” The hours she’s chosen to work mean that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesn’t think that puts any pressure on their relationship. Her work isn’t physically very hard, but it’s not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps they’d be a bit more careful.” The fact that she’s working all night doesn’t worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since I’ve got to be here, I try to enjoy myself-and I usually do, together with the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.” Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think you’re a cleaner because you don’t know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what I’d been doing, but I don’t think that way any more. I don’t dislike the work though I can’t say I’m mad about it.” 28.Margaret quit her job as a nurse because ______. A.she wanted to earn more money to support her family B.she had suffered a lot of mental pressure C.she needed the right time to look after her children D.she felt tired of taking care of patients 29.Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because ______ . A.they never clean their offices B. they look down upon cleaners C.they never do their work carefully D. they always make a mess in their offices 30.When at work, Margaret feels ______. A.light-hearted because of her fellow workers B.happy just because the building is fully lit C.tired because of the heavy workload D.bored because time passes slowly 31.The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margaret’s parents would _____ . A.help care for her children B.regret what they had said C.show hatred for her D.feel disappointed with her D Shopping for clothes is not the same experience for a man as it is for a woman. A man goes shopping because he needs something. His purpose is settled and decided in advance. He knows what he wants, and his objective is to find it and buy it; the price is a secondary consideration. All men simply walk into a shop and ask the assistant for what they want. If the shop has it in stock, the salesman promptly produces it, and the business of trying it on follows at once. All being well, the deal can be and often is completed in less than five minutes, with hardly any chat and to everyone's satisfaction. For a man, slight problems may begin when the shop doesn't have what he wants. In that case the salesman, as the name implies, tries to sell the customer something else, he offers the nearest he can to the article required. No good salesman brings out such a substitute impolitely; he does so with skill: “I know this jacket is not the style you want, sir, but would you like to try it for size? It happens to be the colour you mentioned.” Few men have patience with this treatment, and the usual response is: "This is the right colour and may be the right size, but I should be wasting my time and yours by trying it on." Now how does a woman go about buying clothes? In almost every respect she does so in the opposite way. Her shopping is not often based on need. She has never fully made up her mind what she wants, and she is only “having a look round”. She is always open to persuasion; indeed she sets great store by what the saleswoman tells her, even by what companions tell her. She will try on any number of things. Uppermost in her mind is the thought of finding something that everyone thinks suits her. Contrary to a lot of jokes, most women have an excellent sense of value when they buy clothes. They are always on the lock-out for the unexpected bargain. Faced with a roomful of dresses, a woman may easily spend an hour going from one rail to another, to and fro, often retracing her steps, before selecting the dresses she wants to try on. It is a laborious process, but apparently an enjoyable one. Most dress shops provide chairs for the waiting husbands. 32. When a man is buying clothes, he____________. A. doesn’t always know what to buy B. puts price in the first place C. is easily persuaded by the salesman D. may finish the deal quickly 33. What will happen if a man cannot get exactly what he wants? A. He will take the salesman’s advice to buy another one B. He will usually leave the shop without what he wants C. He will choose a similar one in size or in colour D. He will spend more time to find what he likes 34. When shopping for clothes, women _________. A. have their husbands wait for them B. don’t enjoy the tiring process C. welcome suggestions from anyone D. don’t always care about price 35. What is the most obvious difference between men and women shoppers? A. Men buy things of good quality while women don’t. B. Women bargain for their clothes while men do not. C. The fact whether they try on clothes before buying. D. The time they take over buying clothes. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Homework is a major part of going to school: It’s your teachers’ way of evaluating how much you understand what's going on in class. 36 Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less burden. What we can learn from the story is that we must be honest and telling a lie is terrible. As students, honesty is especially important. By giving honest answers to questions in the exam, not only can we learn about our own strengths and weaknesses in our study, but we can help our teachers evaluate our study as well. Therefore, we can make great progress in our study. Besides, we should finish our homework independently and. If we promise to do something, we should keep our word and try our best to do it well. As far as I’m concerned, honesty is a good virtue. People who are honest can always gain others' respect. A liar is always looked down upon and once you lie, people will never believe you even if you speak the truth. Only in an honest way are we able to make more friends and gain their cooperation to achieve our goals. 查看更多
