Two of my friends had gone to the movies the night before and hadn’t invited me. I was in my room thinking of ways to make them sorry when my father came in. “Want to go for a ride, today, Beck? It’s a beautiful day.” “No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning. My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. I forgot to be mad at them and when I came home to find a note on the table. My mother put it where I would be sure to see it. “Dad has had an accident. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”. When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. A broken rib(肋骨)might have pierced(穿透)a lung...” My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. I didn’t hear anything except those terrible words: Leave me alone. My dad said them to save himself from being hurt more. How much had I hurt him when I hurled those words at him earlier in the day? It was several days later that he was finally able to have a conversation. I held his hand gently, afraid of hurting him. “Daddy… I am so sorry…” “It’s okay, sweetheart. I’ll be okay. ” “No,” I said, “I mean about what I said to you that day. You know, that morning?” My father could no more tell a lie than he could fly. He looked at me and said. “Sweetheart, I don’t remember anything about that day, not before, during or after the accident. But I remember kissing you goodnight the night before. ”He managed a weak smile. My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. And we all have the power to choose our words. I intend to do that very carefully from now on. 21. The author was in bad mood that morning because _______. A. his father had a terrible accident B. he couldn’t drive to the mall with his friends C. his friends hadn’t invited him to the cinema D. his father didn’t allow him to go out with his friends 22. Why did the author say sorry to his father in the hospital? A. Because he didn’t go along with his father. B. Because he was rude to his father that morning. C. Because he failed to come earlier after the accident. D. Because he couldn’t look after his father in the hospital. 23. The reason why the author’s father said he forgot everything about that day is that _____ A. he had a poor memory B. he didn’t hear what his son said C. he just wanted to comfort his son D. he lost his memory after the accident 24. What lesson did Beck learn from the matter? A. Don’t treat your parents badly. B. Don’t hurt others with rude words. C. Don’t move the injured in an accident. D. Don’t be angry with friends at small things. B People are overweight for many reasons, the most important one of which is that they eat the wrong foods, get the wrong types of calories per meal, and they also eat meals at the wrong time each day. Food is more powerful than any weight loss pill, because the food that you eat can either make you thin or fat. This is true because your body is like an engine, and it only needs certain foods at certain intervals(间隔) each day. Low-calorie Diets Do Not Work The reason people cannot lose weight by starving themselves is that their metabolism(新陈代谢) will detect any major drop in calories and it will then adjust(调整) itself by burning fewer calories each day. That is the reason why you can eat 1,000 calories per day and not lose any weight, while your friends can eat 2,500 calories per day and not gain any weight. Low-fat Diets Do Not Work Many people in today’s society are buying mostly low-fat or non-fat food at the grocery store. Everybody knows how much fat is inside the food they buy. However, people are getting fatter than ever before by doing this. They are not losing weight by changing to this low-fat lifestyle. Losing weight has nothing to do with these things. One of the most important things you can do to control your weight is to eat the proper foods, such as fruit and vegetables, eat them at the right time, and exercise every day. If people make this a habit, they will lose weight. 25. What is the main reason why people are overweight? A. They eat the wrong foods at the wrong time. B. They eat food with lots of calories. C. They don’t take weight loss pills. D. They burn many calories every day. 26. The article is written in order to________. A. tell readers not to buy low-fat or non-fat food. B. tell readers how to lose weight. C. tell readers about an important scientific discovery. D. call on people to lose weight and stay healthy. 27. To realize the aim of your weight loss plan, you should_________. a. do exercise every day b. eat meals at the right time c. eat fruits and vegetables d. eat low-fat or sweet food e. eat the proper foods at each meal A. a, b, c, d B. a, b, d, e C. a, c, d, e D. a, b, c, C October 15th is the Global Handwashing Day. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap. For example, donators will give 150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia. Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food. Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap. Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing disease-causing germ(细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub(揉搓) it into all areas, including under the fingernails(指甲). Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air. The Partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine(疫苗)or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect(感染) themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others. 28. What’s the best title for this passage? A. Say no to washing hands in the wrong way. B. Find out why washing hands carefully is so important. C. Hand washing: so important--it gets a day of its own. D. Want to live a longer life?--wash your hands. 29. The word “rinse” in Paragraph 3 probably means ______. A. to dry your hands B. to wash away the soap C. to rub your hands carefully D. to clean your fingers 30. The last paragraph mainly tells us ______. A. how to wash your hands correctly B. why washing hand with soap is so important C. the dangers of washing hands without soap D. when we should especially wash our hands with soap 31. In which part of newspaper would you most probably read this passage? A. Medical care B. Public service C. Health report D. Advertisement D Finland lies in the north of Europe, and has Russia to the east. It is two different places in winter and summer. Summers there are fairly dry and hot, although by August things can already begin to get cold and unpleasant. Of course, winters are cold, but the cold is dry. In most parts snow comes in October and clears by the end of March, but in the northern parts snow can fall as early as September and stay until late May. The tourist season in southern Finland is from early June to late August. Finnish holidays are from the summer high season in late June to the end of July. This is the time period of nights with sunlight, when Finland doesn’t seem to sleep. The tourist season in northern Finland is different. Mosquitoes (蚊子) can be annoying in July, but September is lovely with its autumn colors. October, February and March are good times to visit the north of Finland to view the aurora borealis (北极光), and enjoy winter activities such as skiing and dog sledding. The Christmas holiday period is also one of the best times in Finland —after all, this is the “official” home of Santa Claus. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is popular all year round. 32. What do we learn about Finland from the first paragraph? A. It is to the east of Russia. B. The weather in winter is wet. C. It is the coldest country in Europe. D. In the summer high season, Finland doesn’t seem to sleep because ________. A. the sun is out at night B. people in Finland work at night C. people would rather go traveling D. lots of lights are on because of the tourist season 35. What do we learn about the tourist season in northern Finland? A. There are few autumn colors in September. B. Summer is a good time to visit northern Finland. C.
