It’s a beautiful day.”‎ ‎“No! Leave me alone!” Those were the last words I said to him that morning. ‎ ‎ My friends called and invited me to go to the mall with them a few hours later. Please meet us at Highland Park Hospital”. ‎ ‎ When I reached the hospital, my mother came out and told me my father’s injuries were extensive. “Your father told the driver to leave him alone and just call 911, thank God! If he had moved Daddy, there’s no telling what might have happened. [Z-X-X-K]A broken rib(肋骨)might have pierced(穿透)a lung...”‎ My mother may have said more, but I didn’t hear. But I remember kissing you goodnight the night before. ”He managed a weak smile. ‎ ‎ My English teacher once told me that words have immeasurable power. They can hurt or they can heal. Activities are planned in more than 20 countries to get millions of people in the developing world to wash their hands with soap (肥皂). For example, donators (捐献者) will give 150,000 bars of soap to schools in Ethiopia.‎ Experts say people around the world wash their hands every day, but very few use soap at so-called important moments. These include after using the toilet, after cleaning a baby and before touching food.‎ Global Handwashing Day is the idea of the Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap. Partners include the United Nations Children’s Fund, American government agencies, the World Bank and soap makers Unlever and [Z-X-X-K]Procter and Gamble. The organizers say all soaps are equally effective at removing (去掉) disease-causing germ (细菌). They say the correct way to wash is to wet your hands with a small amount of water and cover them with soap. Rub it into all areas, including under the fingernails. Rub for at least twenty seconds. Then rinse well under running water. Finally, dry your hands with a clean cloth or wave them in the air.‎ The Partnership for Handwashing says soap is important because it increases the time that people spend in washing hands. Soap also helps to break up the dirt that holds most of the germs. And it usually leaves a pleasant smell. The Partnership for Handwashing also says washing with ‎ soap before eating or after using the toilet could save more lives than any vaccine (疫苗) or medicine. Hand washing could also prevent the spread of other diseases. When people get germs on their hands, they can infect (传染) themselves by touching their eyes, noses or mouths. Then they can infect others.‎ ‎28. What’s the best title for this passage?‎ ‎ A. Find out why washing hands carefully is so important.‎ ‎ B. If that happens, they have no choice but to connect the phone to the power supply. But it’s impossible to get the battery charged (充电) at the beach. What’s worse, the hot sun is shining right overhead, and the water in the bottle is sure to reach a very high temperature.‎ Antoine Sayah, a university student from Lebanon, developed a special bench mat called the Beachill. It looks similar to the ordinary beach mat and will cause back pain as well. However, the device (装置) can recharge any mobile phone. It is designed to be water-resistant (防水的) and has a 5-watt solar panel, which provides power continuously. The mat also has the refrigeration ‎ equipment that can help keep drinks cool, just like the refrigerator.‎ Antoine Sayah began selling the Beachill on the Internet for$150. He says he has been surprised at the reaction worldwide. “I have got orders for the device from Brazil, Toronto, all over Europe, especially France, America, from all continents.” The Beachill is also gaining popularity in other places, like swimming pools and boats.‎ Some people like the mat because it is lightweight and easy-to-carry. Rita Mathieu bought one of the Beachills. “When I am on the beach, I used to look around for a charger and never managed to find any and the water never stays cool,” she says, “so this kind of beach mat is wonderful and has everything in it, even a pocket where I can put a book. Thanks to it, I can surf the Internet and keep in touch with friends at any time at the beach.”‎ ‎32. Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. 36 ‎ ‎ First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening is probably the most difficult job for ‎ almost all learners of English as a foreign language.‎ ‎ The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. 37 The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download the RealPlayer from RealMedia.com. The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.‎ ‎ Once you have begun to listen regularly, you might still be upset by limited understanding. 38 ‎ ‎ Here is some of the advice I give my students:‎ n Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.‎ n Stay relaxed when you do not understand, and try listening to the material for more times.‎ n Do not translate everything into your native language.‎ n ‎ 39 Don’t fix on details before you have understood the main ideas.‎ n Listen to something you enjoy.‎ ‎ I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I kept on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. 40 Firstly, translating creates a barrier (障碍) between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves continuously. By remaining calm, I noticed that even if I didn’t pay much attention I could usually understand what the speaker had said.‎ A. Listen for the general idea of the conversation.‎ B.
