But I never fully understood it until 2 months ago, when I left my Ph.D. lab in Canada for a 4-month research in a lab in France. On my first day, Pierre — a Ph.D. student whose desk is across from mine — tapped me on the shoulder and asked: "Coffee?" I nodded and followed him down the hallway to the common room, where other grad students were filing in. I ‎ sat there, cautiously sipping the bitter liquid five times stronger than my normal Americano and trying hard not to reveal my uncultured tastes, while lab chatter (闲聊)filled the air.‎ Coffee breaks are a routine part of work life here. The chatter sometimes turns to serious scientific topics. But mostly, the meetups offer a chance to unwind — to share stories about life inside and outside the lab and to connect with people who understand what you're going through.‎ The lighthearted atmosphere and sense of community is a welcome contrast to my life in Canada, where I spent most of my workdays all alone. I went into the lab each morning with set goals for my day. At lunch, I'd keep my eyes glued to my computer while I shoveled(大量送入)forkfuls of salad into my mouth, trying to power through my to-do list. ‎ Our lab held weekly meetings where we'd take turns presenting our latest, work and getting feedback from colleagues. But we didn't take daily coffee breaks. My labmates and I were too busy collecting data and publishing papers.‎ Looking back now, I realize how much we were missing. Researchers need community because good ideas don't just come from reading literature and thinking deep thoughts; it's helpful to bounce ideas off others, particularly in a nonthreatening environment. It's also helpful to have a spot to share the day-to-day ups and downs of life as a grad student. How else are you supposed to know that you're not the only one suffering from challenges like anxiety?‎ ‎24. What can we learn about the author from the first paragraph?‎ A. The author takes coffee breaks as a way to .‎ A. break away from his work life in Canada.‎ B. get involved in serious scientific topics.‎ C. relax and exchange ideas with people.‎ D. collecting data from his colleagues.‎ ‎26. Which of the following best describes the authors work life in Canada?‎ A. Demanding but satisfactory. B. Impersonal but efficient. ‎ C. Challenging and tiresome. D. Stressful and independent.‎ ‎27. What is the best title for the text?‎ A. Why Scientists Should Take Coffee breaks? ‎ B. Coffee Inspires Creativity in Scientists C. Lighthearted Atmosphere Counts D. North American Life VS. European Life C What makes us human? Is it our thoughts? Our emotions? Our behavior?‎ All of these things make us who we are,but at the center of it all lies the genome — the genes inside our bodies that determine everything from our hair color to our intelligence. But if we could change our genome, would we still be human?‎ Recently,a group of scientists from the US and South Korea worked together to successfully “edit” a human embryo(胚胎)and remove a genetic mutation(变异)that would have led to heart disease. This was achieved with the help of CRISPR-a gene — editing tool that allows scientists to edit the genome by cutting, changing or adding to parts of it.‎ Scientists involved in DNA editing are certain about the good of their work, and hope that in the future, diseases could simply be “edited out”.‎ However, others aren't so sure. People are worried that the science could be used not only to remove life-threatening illness, but also to make a “perfect” baby whose DNA has been chosen to improve its intelligence or other qualities. They say that this is a shallow way of thinking about raising children.‎ ‎“It makes you think about who we are as people, and it makes you ask if humans should use the kind of power…that is changing human evolution(进化),”Jennifer Doudna of the University of California said.‎ Still, others worry that DNA editing could be turned into an expensive service that would only be available to the people who could afford it. That might mean the rich would be given another advantage in a world where they already have plenty of them.‎ ‎“You could find wealthy parents buying the technology for their children, leading to even greater inequality than we already live with,” Marcy Darnovsky, director of the San Francisco Center for Genetics and Society, said.‎ ‎28.Why are the questions asked in Paragraph 1?‎ A.To attract the readers' interest.‎ B.To seek answers from the readers.‎ C.To show those things aren't important.‎ D.To correct our understanding of human beings.‎ ‎29.Which of the following will Jennifer Doudna most probably agree with?‎ A.Having a perfect baby is not so good for the family.‎ B.Life-threatening illnesses should be removed before birth.‎ C.DNA editing might cause unexpected problems to humans.‎ D.DNA editing may enlarge the gap between the rich and the poor,‎ ‎30.What does the underlined word“them”most probably refer to?‎ A.Advantages. B.Expensive services. C.Perfect children. D.Qualities ‎31.What's the author's attitude towards DNA editing?‎ A.Disappointed B.Doubtful. C.Positive. D.Objective.‎ D By the end of the century, if not sooner, the world’s oceans will be bluer and greener thanks to a warming climate, according to a new study.‎ At the heart of the phenomenon lie tiny marine microorganisms(海洋微生物) called phytoplankton. Because of the way light reflects off the organisms, these phytoplankton create colourful patterns at the ocean surface. Ocean colour varies from green to blue, depending on the type and concentration of phytoplankton. Climate change will fuel the growth of phytoplankton in some areas, while reducing it in other spots, leading to changes in the ocean’s appearance.‎ Phytoplankton live at the ocean surface, where they pull carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) into the ocean while giving off oxygen. When these organisms die, they bury carbon in the deep ocean, an important process that helps to regulate the global climate. But phytoplankton are vulnerable to the ocean’s warming trend. Warming changes key characteristics of the ocean and can affect phytoplankton growth, since they need not only sunlight and carbon dioxide to grow, but also nutrients.‎ Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a scientist in MIT’s Center for Global Change Science, built a climate model that projects changes to the oceans throughout the century. In a world that warms up by 3℃, ‎ it found that multiple changes to the colour of the oceans would occur. The model projects that currently blue areas with little phytoplankton could become even bluer. But in some waters, such as those of the Arctic, a warming will make conditions riper for phytoplankton, and these areas will turn greener. “Not only are the quantities of phytoplankton in the ocean changing. ” she said, “but the type of phytoplankton is changing.”‎ And why does that matter? Phytoplankton are the base of the food web. If certain kinds begin to disappear from the ocean, Dutkiewicz said, “it will change the type of fish that will be able to survive.” Those kinds of changes could affect the food chain.‎ Whatever colour changes the ocean experiences in the coming decades will probably be too gradual and unnoticeable, but they could mean significant changes. “It’ll be a while before we can statistically show that the changes are happening because of climate change,” Dutkiewicz said, “but the change in the colour of the ocean will be one of the early warning signals that we really have changed our planet.”‎ ‎32.What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?‎ A.The various patterns at the ocean surface.‎ B.The cause of the changes in ocean colour.‎ C.The way light reflects off marine organisms.‎ D.The efforts to fuel the growth of phytoplankton.‎ ‎33.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?‎ A.Sensitive. B.Beneficial. C.Significant. D.Unnoticeable.‎ ‎34.What can we learn from the passage?‎ A.Phytoplankton play a declining role in the marine ecosystem.‎ B.Dutkiewicz’s model aims to project phytoplankton changes.‎ C.Phytoplankton have been used to control global climate.‎ D.Oceans with more phytoplankton may appear greener.‎ ‎35.What is the main purpose of the passage?‎ A.To assess the consequences of ocean colour changes.‎ B.To analyse the composition of the ocean food chain.‎ C.To explain the effects of climate change on oceans.‎ D.To introduce a new method to study phytoplankton.‎ 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ It's a nightmare to have to wait for exam results.___36___ If you’re stressed out after taking your exams, don't worry There are some steps you can take to calm down and reduce your stress.‎ Take some deep breaths.Stress and anxiety can trigger(引发) your body's “fight or flight”, response, making your breaths shallow and rapid.___37___Put one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen(腹部).As you breathe, you should feel your abdomen expands along with your chest.‎ Try not to go over the exam in depth afterwards.some people find it comforting to talk to friends about what they have written. However, it only makes you worry about the answers you can't change. It is also a bad idea because your brain does not perform will under stressful conditions. You will be unable to think clearly right after a stressful exam___38___.‎ Get some exercise to relax. You might feel like hitting the gym or going for a run directly after an exam, and doing some exercise is a great way to reduce stress!___39___After the exam, try doing exercise like jogging, swimming or cycling.Regular exercise has been shown to decrease stress and improve your sleep.‎ ‎___40___Regardless of the results, you should celebrate the fact that you have worked hard on your exams. reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. You can do reading with your friends or family.Studies have shown that spending time with friends and loved ones is an excellent way to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm and well-being.‎ A.Do something enjoyable to relax.‎ B.Spend time with positive people.‎ C.Laughter is really the best medicine.‎ D.Fight this stress response by taking deep breath.‎ E.It can produce a kind of chemicals to improve your mood.‎ F.You may feel like you perform much worse than you actually do.‎ G.The situation will be worse if you aren't sure of your performance.‎ 第三部分:英语知识运用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;毎题1,5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下而短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选顶(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。‎ UPS driver Ryan Arens was making his rounds near a pond in Bozeman when he heard a strange sound .It was December, and about 15 feet from the frozen bank was the 41 of that sound — a half-submerged(半淹没) wire-haired dog, 42 to cling to a thin layer of ice.
