Whether it is a hike on a mountain trail or through the woods, an enjoyable hiking trip can easily turn into a dangerous situation if safety is not considered well. North Mountain State Park recommends hikers consider the following tips before hitting any trails: Make a copy of your itinerary to give to a family member or a friend. Make sure that someone close to you knows where you are and how long you will be gone. Wear a good pair of hiking boots or strong athletic shoes. The right shoes will keep you safe, warm, and comfortable. Prepare for various types of weather conditions. Check the forecast before you leave; take along sunglasses and extra clothing (e.g., a hat and /or a jacket for a day hike). Pack plenty of food and water. Consider how long your hike will be and pack accordingly. Pack basic and necessary supplies. Bring a first-aid kit(急救箱 ), a flashlight, a pocket knife, a map of the area (if available), and a compass. You may need other supplies, such as matches, depending on how long your hike will be. Determine what time the sun sets. This information is available in most local newspapers. Most people become lost after nightfall, so it is important to know this information. Stay on properly marked trails. Stay on established trails to decrease the chances of becoming lost. Staying on established trails also lowers the risk of doing harm to rare and endangered plants. Carry a whistle(哨子). Using a loud whistle is a good way to call attention to your location if you get lost. Keep an eye out for wildlife. Do not approach animals in the wild, even if they seem friendly. The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) manages a diverse system of more than 120 parks. C Composer David Cope is the inventor of a computer program that writes original works of classical music. It took Cope 30 years to develop the software. Now most people can't tell the difference between music by the famous German composer J.S.Bach(1685-1750)and the Bach-like compositions from Cope's computer. It all started in 1980 in the United States, when Cope was trying to write an opera. He was having trouble thinking of new melodies, so he wrote a computer program to create the melodies. At first this music was not easy to listen to. What did Cope do? He began to rethink how human beings compose music. He realized that composers' brains work like big databases. First, they take in all the music that they have ever heard. Then they take out the music that they dislike. Finally, they make new music from what is left. According to Cope, only the great composers are able to create the database accurately, remember it, and form new musical patterns from it. Cope built a huge database of existing music. He began with hundreds of works by Bach. The software analyzed the data: it broke it down into smaller pieces and looked for patterns. It then combined the pieces into new patterns; Before long, the program could compose short Bach-like works. They weren't good, but it was a start. Cope knew he had more work to do---he had a whole opera to write. He continued to improve the software. Soon it could analyze more.complex music. He also added many other composers, including his own work, to the database. A few years later, Cope's computer program, called “Emmy”, was ready to help him with his opera. The process required a lot of collaboration(合作) between the composer and Emmy. Cope listened to the computer's musical ideas and used the ones that he liked. With Emmy, the opera took only two weeks to finish. It was called Cradle Falling, and it was a great success! Cope received some of the best reviews of his career, but no one knew exactly how he had composed the work. Since that first opera, Emmy has written thousands of compositions. Cope still gives Emmy feedback(反馈) on what he likes and doesn't like of her music, but she is doing most of the hard work of composing these days! 29. What led David Cope to invent software? A. He had difficulties in writing an opera. B. He dreamed of developing software. C. He wanted to help composers. D. He was fond of classical music. 30. What do we know about David Cope? A. His Cradle Falling wasn’t popular. B. He had kept on improving his software. C. He composed Bach-like works well at the beginning. D. He has shifted his attention to invent different software. 31. It can be learnt from the text that _______. A. Cope’s database includes Bach’s works only. B. Bach’s music helped Cope a lot. C. Cope is a computer programmer. D. Emmy did much more work than Cope in composing. 32. What is the best title for the text? A. The Invention of a Software for Creating Music B. Ways to Create a Music Database C. David Cope--a Music Genius D. How to Start Creating Music D A recent report found 46% of parents agreed that their child knew more about the Internet than they did. And now new research shows parents are turning to their children for lessons in technology. The new study of around 1,000 parents showed that 67% of parents have asked their teenager children for technology-related advice. 44% have asked their teenager for help using the Internet, and 41% have received teen advice about how to use the TV or home entertainment system. Ahad Surooprajally, a father of five children, says his children help him with technology in the home. “They’ve grown up surrounded by technology,” he explains. “We have four computers and four iPads in our house. If I want to know something technical they’re the ones I go to.” He says his nine-year-old son Habeeb is the only person in the house who really understand the TV. So he tells Habeeb which film he wants to watch and Habeeb connects his mobile phone to the TV. “You teach your kids everyday life lessons, but the tables are turned when it comes to technology,” says Ahad. As well as learning how to use technology properly, there is another advantage of parents asking their children to help them understand the digital world. They may be able to get a better understanding of what their kids are doing online. Will Gardner of the charity Childnet International says, “We have to continuously encourage parents to find out more about what their children are doing online. If the kids are using a social networking site, get them to show you around it if you are not using it already.” 33.What do we know about the new study? A. Few parents trust their children to give them advice. B. About half of the parents have no idea how to use a computer. C. Most teenagers know more about the Internet than their parents. D. Over two-thirds of parents turned to their teenagers on tech matters. 34.Will Gardner seems to suggest that parents should _________. A. try to learn how to make friends online. B. keep an eye on children’s online safety. C. encourage children to use social networking sites. D. ask children to teach them how to use computers. 35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Internet: Open to our kids too early B. Children: Parents' technology advisors C. Parents: Confused by new technology D. Technology: Challenge for everyone 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 My mother is a diligent and kind woman. She goes to work early in the morning and does not return home until late in the afternoon. 37 She treats them with patience and teaches them well. For her excellent quality and very good teaching results, she has been elected as a model teacher several times. 38 Every day, when she comes back home from work, she sets about doing housework, sweeping the living room and bedrooms or cleaning the furniture, and putting everything in good order. She seems to be busy all the time. As she has been very busy working every day, she looks older than her age. But she looks as cheerful and happy as ever. Mother never buys expensive dresses for herself, but she often buys some inexpensive but high quality clothes for us. 39 She just eats a plain meal outside when she is too busy to cook herself. She lives a busy yet simple life, without any complaints. Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! 40 This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior.
