I waited anxiously, knowing that once I received it I would know how good a writer I really am. When the paper arrived at my classroom, I nearly knocked down five of my classmates to get to the first paper. With the school paper in my hands, I returned to my seat. About a month earlier, I had handed in one of, what I believed to be, my best stories. I named it Symbol of Success. The head of the English Department at my school, Professor Cullen, had said that she would include some reviews (评论) of students' stories in the latest school paper. Professor Cullen was known for her picky criticism(批评). Pleasing her was very hard but I wanted to be the first to do so. I sat at the edge of my seat as I read through the other story reviews. There wasn't one story that got more than three stars. I became calm and wasn't anxious to know my review. It was long after that I heard someone shout out “Five stars?! Seriously!” from behind me. I turned around and saw the shocked expression of Gene's face, “Peter, your story got five stars!” I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I turned my attention back to my story and saw the five stars at the end of the review that I had not read yet. I looked through the review written by Professor Cullen. She wrote that I had a gift for story writing. I was proud that I achieved what I thought was impossible. For so long I believed I wasn't as good as I thought I was and that my talent was not enough to cover up my lack of writing skills. But this review proved that I was truly a good writer and that there was a future ahead of me in the field of fiction writing. The review and the five stars meant the world to me. Those five stars became the symbol of my success. 21.How did the writer get the school paper? A. His teacher gave it to him first. B. The publisher sent it to him first C. His friend helped him get the first one. D. He rushed ahead to get the first one by himself. 22.What can we learn about Professor Cullen? A. She was very kind to everyone. B. She seldom praised her students. C. She was very cold to her students. D. She was hated by her students. 23.What did Professor Cullen think of Peter's story? A. She thought highly of it. B. She thought it was just soso. C. She thought it was extremely bad. D. She doubted if it was written by him. The farm-to-table idea has become more and more popular in recent years. But there is also a group that brings “table to farm”. This traveling group is called Outstanding in the Field. It says its goal is to reconnect people to the land and to honor local farmers by creating a sort of restaurant without walls. Jim Denevan got the idea for this ten years ago. “We want to bring people closer to where food comes from and hear the stories directly from farmers, walk around and get to know farms, which are important.” He recently prepared tables for more than a hundred people at Briars Farmstead in Virginia. He and his eight-member group arrived the night before. Chefs (厨师) from a local restaurant helped cook the dinner. “I wanted to make the idea work, so I decided to cross the country. I went all the way across the United States and set tables on farms and on beaches, and all the places where food comes from,” said Jim Denevan. Guests bring their own plates to the meal. When they arrive, the farmer shows them around. The tour of the farm ends at the dinner table. The meats in the courses and the vegetables all come from nearby farms. Alex Bogel is one of the guests. “It is also especially wonderful to sit at a big table with all these people. The feeling of sharing things and belonging to a group is wonderful.” Jim Denevan and his team have served almost thirteen thousand people. He plans to expand(扩张) it. They plan to go to Asia, Africa and Australia and back to South America. 28. The purpose of the group Outstanding in the Field is to________. A. encourage farmers to do their work in a scientific way B. get people to know more about farms and farmers C. help local farmers to make more money D. bring healthy food to people’s dinner tables 29. We can learn from the passage that Jim Denevan________. A. got the table-to-farm idea by accident B. doesn’t like having meals in restaurants C. was the first to come up with the farm-to-table idea D. worked very hard to carry out the table-to-farm idea 30. Jim Denevan and his eight-member group ________. A. do all the preparation work for the meals on the farm B. pay for all the things that are needed for a big meal C. have made much money from the idea D. have already gone to many countries 31. What impresses(使印象深刻)Alex Bogel most on the farm? A. The number of guests from other cities. B. The delicious foods which were served. C. The kinds of vegetables that are grown by the farmers. D. The experience of eating together with many strangers. D Are you the type of person who always says yes? However, it’s OK to say no! People are still going to like you. They may even respect you more because they know you are honest. I’m not saying that you should say no to someone who really needs your help. I’m talking about turning down the meeting that you really do not want to go to or the birthday party that you don’t want to be a guest at. Think for a moment how you feel when you say yes to something that you really don’t want to do. If you’re like what I once was, you can’t sleep at night and you think about it too much. It weighs on your mind. You try to find ways out. If you really want to go, you will not have all of these thoughts. So, why not just say no from the beginning? Maybe you think if you don’t show up at the meeting (by the way, it is not one you must go to), your boss isn’t going to like you or your co-workers won’t respect you. Maybe you feel as if your mom, dad or sisters won’t love you as much if you don’t do everything for them. If these people are your true friends, family members, or a good boss, they will like or love you the same. People treat you the way you teach them to, and if you’re someone who always says yes then that’s what they’re expecting. You need to do what is right for you. Of course we do have real responsibility in life to meet, but we do not have to do everything others want us to do. 32. In the writer’s opinion, ________ . A. we must do what is right for other people B. it is not always easy to win friends’ trust C. learning to say no is very important in our life D. saying yes is the best way to win others’ respect 33. The underlined sentence “It weighs on your mind” in the third paragraph probably means “________”. A. you try to find excuses to refuse it B. you are worried about it very much C. you are too busy to care about it D. it fills your mind with good ideas 34. According to the writer, if you always say yes, ________. A. your friends will soon get tired of you B. your family members will love you more C. you will have little chance of success in your life D. people will expect you to do what they want you to do 35. We can learn from the passage that the writer________. A. seldom said no to people around him/her before B. gets along badly with his/her boss and co-workers now C. always makes his/her parents angry by refusing them D. thinks it his/her own responsibility to help those in need 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 __36__ If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and your ability to focus will increase.
