But what about what we’ve lost? Let’s look at the following things.‎ Calculators They are like tiny computers whose only job is to do math. That is literally all they do. Sure, they could make some amusing swear words. 8008 looks like BOOB. And type in 7734 and then turn the calculator upside down and it looks like HELL. But you definitely couldn’t get the ‎ weather or your email.‎ The busy signal Back in the days of landlines, calling somebody and getting a busy signal used to be annoying. But today, in an age of digital phones, we would give anything to hear a busy signal, because if you hear one, you get some solid information. The person you are trying to reach is home, just on another call, going straight to voicemail can mean anything. But that beep-beep-beep is a reason for hope!‎ Computer labs In high schools and colleges in the past, there was a specific room where they kept all the computers. Nobody had their own computer. Back then was as absurd as saying “I could fly commercial, but I prefer to fly my own plane.” So you went to these rooms and used one of the computers, and then you left and you didn’t have the access to a computer again until you went back to that room! Nowadays, everyone has their own computer.‎ 1. Calculators are rejected mainly because _____.‎ A. They are not easy to keep B. They have only one function C. They are not of good quality D. They have the wrong weather report 2. What can we know from the last paragraph?‎ A. People liked to travel by air in the past.‎ B. Few people had time to joke with each other.‎ C. Few people liked to use computers then.‎ D. No student had a PC then.‎ 3. What do the three things have in common according to the passage?‎ A. They have nearly become out of date.‎ B. They have been hi-tech products.‎ C. They have helped develop the economy.‎ D. They have promoted modern technology.‎ B Imagine a beautiful blueberry sits on the empty plate in front of you. You pick it up gently, and place it on your tongue to taste it. You already know how a blueberry tastes, but this one is a bit riper than what you’d like, so you make a face, feel disappointed, and swallow it with dissatisfaction, thinking that it doesn’t taste exactly as you have expected: Nothing special. You just swallow it, and move on with your day. Suppose you don’t know how a blueberry will taste. You don’t know because you haven’t tried one before. You’re curious and taste it, and you notice the fragrance, the firmness of the skin, the sweetness of the center, the complex flavors that emerge as you eat it. You didn’t know how it would taste, but this is brilliant! It’s new, because you’ve never tasted anything quite like it. This is sometimes called the Beginner’s Mind, but I think of it as a mind free of expectations. The blueberry, of course, can be anything in life: Life is nothing but a series of things you barely like and barely notice. If you approach it with expectations, it will often disappoint or frustrate you. But if you approach each moment, each task, each person, without expectations, new worlds open up to you. So just see that moment or person as it is, and then you will really ‎ see that moment. Really appreciate it. Experience it like you’ve never experienced anything before. This is the skills and abilities that we need to live well. To master these skills and abilities is not as easy as you have imagined. It takes practice. It means learning to see the frustrations, anger, sadness, loneliness, and irritations as signals of the expectations you have and didn’t notice. It means practicing that, and then practicing letting them go. But that’s the fun of it. You drop the expectations that you’ll be perfect at this practice, and just try it. You learn from the try. You get better. You learn some more. So the process of mastery is series of miracle moments. That’s a beautiful thing.‎ 1. Why do people feel disappointed when tasting a blueberry that is a little riper?‎ A. It doesn’t satisfy their hunger.‎ B. It doesn’t meet their expectations.‎ C. It doesn’t provide a well-balanced diet.‎ D. If doesn’t offer a high standard of comfort.‎ 2. What is a person with the Beginner’s Mind likely to do?‎ A. Have no idea of the possible bad results.‎ B. Lack the first impression of something.‎ C. Escape from the painful experiences in daily life.‎ D. Show much interest in something.‎ 3. What does the author advise us to do in paragraph 3?‎ A. Try out everything with courage.‎ B. Learn from the past experiences.‎ C. Master some social skills.‎ D. Enjoy life to the fullest.‎ 4. What does the passage mainly talk about?‎ A. The sense of taste. B. The flavor of blueberry.‎ C. The art of living. D. The meaning of life.‎ C The word heliography usually refers to photographic process invented in about 1822, but artist Michael Papadakis has given it a new meaning.‎ Five years ago, Michael used to create art in the old way, with painting and drawing tools, but on a trip along the Silk Road from Asia to Europe, he became excited about his discovery. “When I was in China, my friend had a magnifying glass(放大镜) sitting on his table and I remember the sun shining through the window onto the magnifying glass,” said Michael. “I instantly realized something new should be tried.”‎ The young artist threw away all of his painting supplies and started experimenting with the sun painting. Luckily for him, his town gets around 300 days of sun a year, which provides him with adequate time to practice.‎ Holding a wide range of magnifying glass types a few feet away from his wooden canvas, Michael focuses the sun’s rays in a small point he skillfully guides with his hands to scorch(烧焦) his designs into the wood. From natural views and animal portraits, to romantic and heart-warming scenes and company logos, there’s nothing this talented artist can’t do as long as it’s sunny out and he has his magnifying glass. However, he should always take care and protect himself when working long hours, such as covering his eyes with glasses.‎ Michael claims that apart from the unusual tool, what makes his art special compared to ‎ painting and drawing is that the process is just as interesting as the result. “I am also a film-maker and I realized that this was a Performance Art and people have to see it to understand it and truly appreciate it,” he says. “When I am working on large scales, people stop in amazement and stare at the bright light. I have to tell them to stop.”‎ Interestingly, three years ago, Jordan Mang-osan also used magnifying glasses to scorch complex design into wooden canvases. Their great art form is very similar to pyrography, the art of painting with heat. Only instead of a soldering iron, it uses concentrated sunlight.‎ 1. Why did Michael feel excited on his trip along the Silk Road?‎ A. He focused his paintings on ancient China.‎ B. He made friends with local people.‎ C. He found an ancient magnifying glass.‎ D. He found a new tool for painting.‎ 2. What is implied in Michael’s words in paragraph 5?‎ A. Many people are so careless that they are injured in their eyes.‎ B. Michael wants to develop better skills in making films.‎ C. Michael is always disturbed by curious people around.‎ D. Many people want to get involved in the sun painting.‎ 3. What is the best title of the passage.‎ A. A wonderful artist B. Painting with the sun C. Creating the new image D. Making use of nature 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两个选项为多余选项。‎ People judge others by what they say and what they do. How you speak to others also contributes to the impression you leave on others. Whether communicating with colleagues and superiors or family and friends, it’s beneficial to address people politely. If you need a hand or you are trying to apologize for a mistake you made, expressing yourself politely is more likely to get the results you want. 31 It makes them more receptive(接受的) to what you’re saying.‎ ‎ 32 For example, “Please close the window.” or “Close the window, please.” is much more polite than “Close the window.”‎ Use helping words such as “would”, “could”, “will” and “can” soften a possible demanding tone when you want something done. 33 For example, “Can I leave now?” and “Could I get a drink?” is more polite than “I am leaving now.” and “I’m getting a drink.”‎ ‎ 34 A quieter voice sounds more polite than a loud one. For example, “I do not want to go.” when stated in a low, quiet voice is more likely to be interpreted as a polite request, than if the same statement was said loudly, like a demand.‎ Use a soft tone when speaking politely. Even if the volume of your speech remains the same, tone can change implication of your words from anger to respect. For example, if you say, “I do not want to go.” with an emphasis on the word “not” or “I”, you will sound less polite than if you keep the tone even(平均的). 35 ‎ A. Be aware of how loudly you are speaking.‎ B. People should try to be polite to other people.‎ C. Some words are important in communication.‎ D. Use the word “please” every time you make a request.‎ A. Everyone feels more respected when spoken to politely.‎ B. Phrasing commands as questions makes them more polite.‎ C. You’d better not emphasize(强调) any words and remove emotion from your voice 第三部分 语言应用(共两节,满分45分)‎ 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。‎ Ann and the children and I moved from our rural home in Virginia so that I could train for a new career. From the second floor she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.‎ Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. The old lady was proud of Myra. Her husband had been elected Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work.‎ The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps-perhaps Myra would come. After all, eighty was a special birthday.‎ Even if Myra didn’t come, she would send her a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited-like a child. She would enjoy her day.‎ Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had bought a card and a bunch of flowers when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints(薄荷)and promised he wouldn’t go out to play until the post had come. “I guess you will get a lot of presents,” he said.‎ What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new coat. A coat would be lovely. Blue’s such a pretty color. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.‎ 注意:‎ 1. ‎ Paragraph 1:‎ She stood by the window, watching. _____________________________________________‎ ‎_______________________________________________________________________________‎ ‎_______________________________________________________________________________‎ Paragraph 2:‎ Almost unwillingly she tore the envelope open. ____________________________________‎ ‎_______________________________________________________________________________‎ 高二英语期中考试答案 ‎1-20 AACAB CBCAB ABBCC BABCA ‎21-35 BDABB DCDCB EDFAG ‎36-55 BCADA DCABB CDBAB CDBCD 填空 ‎56. which 57.pages 58. across 59. from 60. at ‎ ‎61. carrying 62. to begin 63. whispered 64. a 65. surprised ‎ 应用文 ‎ I often imagine what my life will be like in the future. I think my life will be very different in ten years. I will be twenty-eight years old by then. I will have my own family, probably with a lovely child. I hope I’ll work in a computer company as a program designer. I’ll enjoy my work and get along well with my fellow workers. I’ll do a good job in whatever I do. In my free time, I’ll continue to regular exercise, such as swimming and ball games. In a word, my life will be much richer and more colorful.‎ 读后续写:‎ She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner in his bike. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him to and ran to the gate. After a while, Johnnie ran up to the second floor and knocked at her door. “Granny, granny,” he shouted. “I’ve got your post.” He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra’s writing. “No parcel, Johnnie?” “No, granny.” Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.‎ Almost unwillingly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday-Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque fluttered to the floor like a butterfly with broken wings. Slowly the old lady bent to pick her present up. With trembling fingers, she tore it into little pieces.‎
