Here is one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life. Question: Could you introduce yourself first? Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right now I'm a web designer. Q: What are your great memories? A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all day long. Those are my great memories. Q: Does your childhood mean a lot to you? A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be independent. Q: What changes would you like to make in your life? A: If I could change something in my life, I'd change it so that my childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we have a beautiful house? It doesn't matter as long as I can live with my family and we are safe. Q: How do you get along with your parents? A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back what I've got. That's our way. But I am working in another city. My only contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It filters(过滤) out your emotion and leaves your voice only. But his magical world – where witches (魔法师) cast spells and castles float in the sky – is brought to life by hand. Nevertheless, Hayao Miyazaki is referred to as Japan’s Walt Disney and considered by many to be the world’s greatest living animator. This month, the 72-year-old Miyazaki announced his retirement. The Japanese animator has directed 11 animated full-length films over the past four decades, including the Oscar-winning Spirited Away (《千与千寻》) and his latest release, The Wind Rises (《起风了》), which tells the life story of a man who designed Japanese World War II fighter planes. Just as The Wind Rises shows, Miyazaki is well-known for his obsession with flight, especially human flight. Other striking aspects of Miyazaki’s films include his themes of environmental protection and the horrors of war. Miyazaki’s work is also famous for its lack of clearly defined good and evil characters. He sees the 21st century as a complex time when old norms need to be re-examined. As a storyteller, he is an inventor of fairy tales full of mystery. In the Miyazakian universe, wizards (巫师) turn into birds of prey; young girls are transformed overnight into 90-year-old women; greedy parents are changed into pigs; and shooting stars become fire demons (恶魔). As a visual artist, most of Miyazaki’s grace comes from his vivid colors and lovingly drawn landscapes – a rolling meadow (草地) covered with flowers and shadowed by clouds, or a range of rocky hills rising toward snow-capped mountain peaks People attribute Miyazaki’s success to his long pursuit of his hand-drawn technique, although in an interview with CNN he called himself an “extinct species” in the age of digital animation. A recent television documentary on the making of The Wind Rises showed a disappointed Miyazaki throwing a pile of drawings into the trash. He is said to have redrawn thousands of frames of the much-praised Princess Mononoke (《幽灵公主》) when they did not meet his standards. But his huge attention to detail has earned him the respect of the entire animated film world. Even John Lasseter – head of Pixar, the famous US computer animation studio – once called Miyazaki “one of the greatest filmmakers of our time”. 24.What can we know about Miyazaki’s film The Wind Rises? A. It was put on a long time ago. B. Its hero is a soldier. C. It describes horrors of war. D. It is an Oscar-winning film.[] 25.What does the underlined word “obsession” mean in paragraph 3? A. Enthusiasm. B. Hate. C. Envy. D. Sympathy. 26.According to the article, Miyazake’s films _____. A. are full of mystery and imaginative characters and landscapes B. are likely to use hand-drawn technique and redrawn abstract frames C. are full of new norms and clearly defined good and evil characters D. are likely to demonstrate environmental protection and anti-war themes 27.What is the main idea of this article? A. Miyazake’s impact on Japanese culture. B. the characteristics of Miyazake’s films. C. what inspired Miyazake to create his films. D. what made Miyazake succeed. C A few years ago, I was on a plane with my friend, waiting for it to take off. The pilot’s voice was heard throughout the plane: “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. Our engines don’t work. We are going to jump-start them. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and see what happens.” That was all he said. “See what happens?” “Shouldn’t we have had a better plan than that?” One woman started crying, “Oh no! We are going to crash!’’ There were sighs of hopelessness and anxiety, and we hadn’t even taken off yet. The pilot even seemed unhappy. He told us our one engine was working double time, and his plan was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air, and what happened? Nothing. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched down than applause burst out as everyone on the airplane breathed a sigh of relief. While I do prefer planning better than “see what happens” when it comes to flying, it really isn’t such a bad idea for life. All too often, people stop trying to achieve their goals just because they don’t have a guaranteed result. But success will never be guaranteed. The best thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. If your effort is to build a business then get up in the air and see what happens! Don’t give yourself all the reasons why you can’t. Do not wait until you have everything you need. You never will! If your goal is to start a friendship, say “Hello”, get up in the air and see what happens! The results could be very rewarding. If your goal is to learn a new skill, get up in the air and see what happens! It might not be as difficult as your think. It could be fun! When traveling, I hope that my pilot has a more detailed plan than “we will see what happens” . But in life, it is not a bad strategy at all. 28.What was the pilot’s attitude toward the situation? A. Panicked. B. Honest. C. Cheerful. D. Hesitant. 29.What was the passengers’ reaction when they arrived in Norfolk ? A. They were thankful and relieved. B. They cheered for the pilot’s correct operation. C. They complained that the plane was not safe enough. D. They just walked off the plane as if nothing had happened. 30.What can we know from the passage? A. The plane was delayed because of its wheels. B. The plane arrived at the airport safely. C. It was a terrible journey for the author. D. Most of the passengers remained calm on hearing the bad news. 31.What is the main idea of this article? A. “we will see what happens” is not a good plan for pilots. B. Try to have everything prepared before you do something. C. When you want to do something, you have to actually do it. D. Never stop chasing your goals even if they are certain to fail. D Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads. The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.” Smell, which dictates(决定) the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always been the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range of smells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome. Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,000 olfactory (嗅觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works. According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clear thinking and mental focus. However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors. 32.What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out? A. The type of food smells. B. The logical part of human brain. C. The nature of human olfactory system. D. The relationship between food and feelings. 33. Which of the following can help people concentrate? A. Bread. B. Pizza. C. Coffee. D. Fast food. 34. What do we know from the last paragraph? A. Some people can recognize up to 50 smells. B. Every person has a different pattern of genes. C. Different people are sensitive to different smells. D. There are still some olfactory genes to be found out. 35. What is the passage mainly about? A. Logic and behavior. B. Smell and its influence. C. Sense ability and food tastes. D. Olfactory genes and its system. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分。) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Kids in the Kitchen Some experts serve up some of the ingredients(调料,要素) that make cooking with kids a pleasure rather than a struggle. 36 For obvious reasons, a grown-up needs to be in charge of the stove, sharp knives and electrical equipment. Dr. Colker advises parents to be watchful even when their kids are involved in relatively safe tasks. The bottom line is to stay close by, and teach your kids to respect basic safety rules. Leave Time 37 When kids help, you’ll need extra time to teach them some skills, which makes many parents grow impatient. But it’s worth it, because as they get older and develop more skills, they will become wonderful helpers and even save your time! Go for Variety Our experts agree that children can enjoy more than the usual “kid food”, such as chicken nuggets and pizza. 38 Sandra D. Nissenberg suggests exploring the supermarket with your kids and talking about the unusual fruits and vegetables you find. Involve Kids in Cleanup and Table setting Dr. Laura Colker reminds parents that preschoolers are eager to deal with grown-up tasks. They actually “enjoy the cleanup and table setting activities”, she says. 39 They may also enjoy setting the table and counting the spoons. Make Cooking a Learning Adventure Cooking helps kids develop a healthy interest in the lifelong challenge of eating nourishing(有营养的), delicious meals. Kids learn about science when they heat or cool a mixture and observe how it changes. 40 And as they wait for the timer to ring, they develop a better understanding of the concept of time. A. Measuring ingredients teaches kids about fractions(分散). B. Most young children can easily handle simple kitchen equipment. C. Stay Equipped D. Keep an Eye on Safety E. However, different people have different opinions about this. Some people who are in favor of using the skill in our life believe this can be beneficial to human beings. n the one hand, we can use it in the field of medicine. For example, we may make some organs to replace the bad ones in patients. On the other hand, scientists could clone children for parents having lost their children, which bring happiness to them. Just as the old saying goes, every coin has two sides. Others who are against it think that the cloned people can be used as a tool to do crimes. What’s more, although we can use them now, we can not forecast the future of the clone people. As far ad I am concerned, while the cloning technology is very useful to us, it’s immoral to clone humans. 查看更多
