By playing both kinds of recording to a series of wild magpies, researchers observed the magpies raising their beaks(喙) to the sky, or dropping their heads to the ground.‎ Researchers attracted the magpies with cheese, then played the noisy miner calls, videotaping the results.‎ As a control, they also rolled a large orange ball towards the magpies to see how they ordinarily tilted(倾斜) their beaks to ground threats, and threw the ball to see how they reacted to aerial threats.‎ The researchers recorded an average maximum beak angle of 29 degrees for the thrown ball, and an average maximum of nine degrees when it was rolled.‎ The miners’ aerial warning caused an average maximum beak angle of 31 degrees, and the ground warning caused an average maximum of 24. ‎ One of the study’s authors, Dominique Potvin, said the magpies showed an astonishing level of insight.‎ Magpies and miners broadly face the same types of predators and the two frequently live in the same ecosystem.‎ Potvin said this had encouraged the magpies’ learned behavior.‎ ‎“Magpies are generally found on the ground and noisy miners are generally found up in trees. It pays for the magpie to pay attention to somebody who has a better view of predators than they do.”‎ She said it was unclear whether other birds could do the same, but it was highly likely other magpies around Australia already did.‎ ‎“Magpies are a pretty smart group. We’re not sure if they’re learning this from other magpies or if they’re figuring it out on their own, but the ability is there.‎ As part of the experiment, researchers also played a third call: a common, non-warning call from a crimson rosella. They found the magpies did not respond.‎ Potvin said that we had been actively exploring animal cognition(认知) research. “It’s a good piece of the puzzle,” Potvin said. “Looking at the social relationships between species that live in communities.”‎ ‎56. What have the researchers found about Australian magpies?‎ A. They can understand other bird calls.‎ B. They can communicate with noisy miners.‎ C. They have a special preference for cheeses.‎ D. They have the ability to warn the predators.‎ ‎57. How did the researchers get their findings?‎ A. By calculating the beak angles of aerial and ground predators.‎ B. By comparing the magpie and the miner responses to threats.‎ C. By monitoring the magpie responses to the miner warning calls.‎ D. By recording the magpie louder scream for other birds’ attention.‎ ‎58. The magpies’ cognition can help them _____. ‎ A. have a better view of the predators than the miners B. better protect themselves from the potential threats C. cooperate with other birds to drive away the predators D. live in harmony with other birds in the same ecosystem ‎59. We can learn from the passage that _____. ‎ A. the magpies are smart learners of other birds’ behaviour B. it’s likely that other birds have developed the same ability C. the findings have clarified the relationships between species D. a lot more remains to be explored about animal cognition B Harriet Worobey, a childhood nutrition instructor, knows firsthand that children can be picky eaters, but even she couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw a preschooler last year who ate a mostly chocolate diet.‎ ‎“Chocolate milk, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip pancakes -- it was, unbelievable.” said Ms. Worobey, director of the Rutgers University Nutritional Sciences Preschool in New Brunswick, N.J. “His mother just thought, ‘That’s what he wants, so that’s what I’m going to give him.’ ”‎ While most parents haven’t resorted to (采取) the chocolate diet, they can relate to the daily challenge of finding foods that children will eat. Although obesity dominates national discussion on childhood health, many parents are also worried that their child’s preferred diet of nuggets and noodles could lead to a nutritional deficit(不足).‎ Fussiness(挑剔) about food is a normal part of a child’s development. Young children are naturally neophobic -- they have a distrust of the new. Even the most determined parents can be cowed by a child’s resolve to eat nothing rather than try something new. As a result, parents often give in, deciding that a bowl of Cocoa Puffs or a Pop-Tart, while not ideal, must be better than no food at all.‎ ‎“I think parents feel like it’s their job to just make their children eat something,” Ms. Worobey said, “but it’s really their job to serve a variety of healthy foods and get their children exposed to foods.”‎ A series of simple meal-time strategies can help even the pickiest eater learn to like a more varied diet. Let’s learn from several common mistakes parents make when feeding their children.‎ They tend to send children out of the kitchen. With hot stoves, boiling water and sharp knives at hand, it is understandable that parents don’t want children in the ‎ kitchen when they’re making dinner. But studies suggest that involving children in meal preparation is an important first step in getting them to try new foods.‎ Researchers at Teachers College at Columbia University studied how cooking with a child affects the child’s eating habits. In one study, nearly 600 children from kindergarten to sixth grade took part in a nutrition curriculum intended to get them to eat more vegetables and whole grains. Some children, in addition to having lessons about healthful eating, took part in cooking workshops. The researchers found that children who had cooked their own foods were more likely to eat those foods in the cafeteria and even ask for seconds, than children who had not had the cooking class.‎ Also, parents are likely to pressure their children to take a bite. Demanding that a child eat at least one bite of everything seems reasonable, but it’s likely to backfire, Studies show that children react negatively when parents pressure them to eat foods, even if the pressure offers a reward. In one study at Pennsylvania State University, researchers asked children to eat vegetables and drink milk, offering them stickers and television time if they did. Later in the study, the children expressed dislike for the foods they had been rewarded for eating.‎ ‎“Parents say things like ‘eat your vegetables and you can watch TV’, but we know that kind of thing doesn’t work either,” said Leann L. Birch, director of Penn. State’s childhood obesity research center and a co-author of the study. “In the short run, you might be able to coerce(强迫) a child to eat, but in the long run, they will be less likely to eat those foods.” The better approach is to put the food on the table and encourage a child to try it. But don’t complain if she refuses, and don’t offer praise if she tastes it. Just ask her if she wants some more or take seconds yourself, but try to stay neutral.‎ One more thing worth noting is that kids are tuned into their parents’ eating preferences and are far more likely to try foods if they see their mother or father eating them. Given this powerful effect, parents who are trying to lose weight should be careful of how their dieting habits can influence a child’s perceptions about food and healthful eating. In one study of 5-year-old girls about dieting, one child noted that dieting involved drinking chocolate milkshakes, because her mother was using Slim-Fast drinks. Another child said dieting meant “you fix food but you don’t eat it.” By exposing young children to inappropriate dieting habits, parents may be putting them at risk for eating disorders.‎ ‎60. As I looked at you, I remembered myself at 14, and the vastly different places we are beginning this journey from.‎ Your identity as a mixed-race young woman, with an English father and a Pakistani mother, has already influenced how you place yourself in this world. As yet, you are unaware of the personal struggles that I took at the age of 25 to marry. How it felt when my mother refused to come to my wedding. The sharp criticisms of the Asian community that such marriages do not work out and always end in divorce. The confidence I had to grow, as we chose to live in a multicultural community, as I refused to be shamed into living in the leafier white suburbs.‎ Then, at the age of 30, I became your mum with all the joys and struggles this brought, as I refused the Asian traditions for a new baby’s arrival. From your birth, your life could not have been more different from mine. I was brought up on a council estate, within a tight-knit extended Muslim family, through which poverty, racism and neglect were woven. I was never given the freedoms or the opportunity to experience new things. Now, as I hear you play your piano. I am grateful that you have these opportunities.‎ So many doors were closed to me as a young person, and as I fought for small steps of freedom, I soon learned that it was better to do what I wanted without the knowledge of my parents, and so deceit and deception (欺骗) became woven into my life too. The pressures to obey, to be a “good Muslim” girl and keep the family honour, were choking. Behind closed doors at home, the neglect and abuse took place. It was hidden, I felt the shame, lived with the fear and suffered alongside my sister and two younger brothers. Oh, the power we thought our parents had over us! I was convinced that one day my father would indeed beat us so hard that leaving us for dead, he would, as his threats said he would, bury us in the large back garden, and tell the school he had taken us back to Pakistan for good. My sister and I longed for a ‎ different blue sky to live under.‎ As a daughter of immigrant parents, I carried their hopes of a better education for their children—my own veins (血管) pulsing with the hard-work ethic (道德) and need to be grateful for the opportunity of a free education. And it was education that provided me with the strength to find my own blue sky. I fought to leave home to go to university at the age of 18, and never returned to live with my parents again.‎ Now as you explore your mixed-race heritage, which I hope we have supported you to do with visits to Pakistan and ensuring you go to multicultural schools, I want you to take the very best of all that is Asian with you as you become a woman.‎ I want you to know that although your journey has been vastly different. I am excited as I watch you standing on the threshold of becoming a woman for all the adventures and possibilities the future holds for you.‎ May you fly your blue sky with grace, confidence and hope as you find your place in this beautiful and crazy world.‎ Loving you now and always.                                          ‎ Mommy ‎65. But by changing habits and doing some smart planning, you can avoid that terror.‎ Here are my suggestions:‎ Cheaper housing Cutting big, unnecessary expenses is a better place to start.‎ For many, the best savings trick is leaving a big city. Housing, restaurants, groceries and basic services typically get cheaper the farther you get from a metropolitan center.‎ In Seattle, for example, a three-bedroom home can cost $1 million or more, according to Zillow. In nearby Duvall, Washington, you get that house plus a nice yard for half a million or less. Renting a three-bedroom Seattle pad typically costs $3,500 a month or more. In the suburbs? Try $2,200. That’s over $15,000 in annual savings.‎ Look up housing costs in any major city and its suburbs. You’ll see similar trends. In California, you get more for your buck in San Ramon than in San Francisco. Santa Clarita is hugely more affordable than Los Angeles.‎ Round Rock, Texas, beats Austin. Garden City, New York, beats Manhattan. Move farther out, to true rural America, and you can cut housing costs by half again, easy.‎ Can’t give up urban living? Consider moving to a cheaper metro area.‎ According to SmartAsset’s analysis, a $1 million retirement fund lasts just 10.5 years in Manhattan. San Francisco is nearly as bad, just 12.7 years.‎ But in some big cities, your buck stretches further. In Denver, your $1 million savings could last 21 years. West Coasters might also try Phoenix, where $1 million lasts over 25 years.‎ Cut entertainment spending If you don’t want to leave family, friends or community, there is another big, easy way to save: Take control of entertainment spending. Few folks fully understand what they waste unconsciously. It’s estimated that people aged 65 to 74 spend $5,832 annually on play. For a couple, that’s around $11,000. One reason it gets out of hand? In retirement, you jump from one or two leisure days a week to seven. ‎ But there is a lot of free and cheap fun. Consider your local Shakespeare in the Park instead of spending hundreds for “Hamilton” tickets. Have picnics or experiment your way through a new cookbook instead of eating out regularly. While watching TV, make sure you actually use services you subscribe to. Many subscribe to things ‎ (streaming, gyms, wholesale retailers, etc.) they rarely use.‎ Rethink your old budget Central to all this: Plan to change your habits, which can become our real Halloween goblins. Humans are habitual creatures, and our routines keep us spending the way we did before. ‎ Just as important as avoiding old routines is setting a budget. Then stick to it. Keep records of your spending. Hold yourself accountable. Don’t forget to plan for the unexpected! Many folks forget to factor in wiggle room for car or home maintenance. ‎ Budgeting and penny-pinching may not sound fun. But it beats the terrifying misery of going broke in old age. Positive parenting techniques work well for raising children with discipline and good moral values, and are every parent’s dream. However, it is not an easy task. ‎ A good parent-children relationship should be set up on the basis of mutual understanding and respect. Parents cannot impose(强加) their ideas on their children. They should treat their children as independent individuals. It is advisable for the parents to learn to follow children’s ideas and encourage them to think on their own rather than decide everything for the children. On the other hand, children should listen to their parents’ advice for they’re more experienced. Try to understand when there is disagreement with parents. Always keep one thing in mind—whatever they do comes from their love for kids. It is necessary for children to exchange ideas with parents from time to time so that the gap between parents and children will be narrowed.‎ ‎【写作内容】‎ ‎1. ‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________‎ ‎_____________________________________________________________________‎ 注意:请将书面表达撰写在答题卡上。‎ 江阴市第一中学2018-2019学年度第二学期期中试卷答案 高二英语 2019.4‎ 第一卷(选择题 共85分)‎ 第一部分: 听力(共20小题,每题1分,满分20分)‎ ‎1~5 CBCAB 6~10 BAACC 11~15 ACBCA 16~20 BABCB 第二部分: 英语知识运用(共两节,满分35分)‎ 第一节:单项选择(共15题,每题1分,满分15分)‎ ‎21-25 DCDCA 26-30 AACCA 31-35 BCACA 第二节:完型填空(共20题,每小题1分,满分20分)‎ ‎36-40 BCADA 41-45 BBCDA 46-50 BADAB 51-55 DCCBC ‎ 第三部分:阅读理解(共10题,每题2分,共20分)‎ ‎56-59 ACBD 60-64 CADAD 65-70 ADACBD 第二卷(非选择题 共35分)‎ 第四部分:基础题 ‎ 第一节:单词拼写(共10题,每小题0.5分,共5分)‎ ‎71. loaded 72. withdrawn 73. typical 74. sacrifice 75. addiction ‎76. assumptions 77. principles 78. skeptical/skeptical ‎ ‎79.distributed 80. circulation 第二节:语法填空(共10题,每小题0.5分,共5分)‎ ‎81. have included 82. should 83. even if 84. to help 85. what ‎ ‎86. ruled 87. conquering 88. less visual 89. which/that 90. or 第五部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每题1分,满分10分)‎ ‎91. running 92. different 93. more 94. hold/last 95. control ‎96. working/employed 97. subscribing 98. again/twice ‎ ‎99. changes/adjustments 100. Positive parent-child bond is beneficial to family harmony and the growth of children.(30 words)‎ ‎ Some reasons may account for the present situation. Most parents are wage-earners, who are always engaged in their daily work. Even if they are off work, they are often faced with countless housework, leaving them little time to enjoy themselves. Owing to that, family communication is becoming more and more difficult, which does great harm to parent-child relationship.‎ From my perspective, parents and children should make joint efforts to create a good relationship. First and foremost, it is very important that parents should emphasize the significance of family time spent with their children. Besides, it would be beneficial if parents could focus on the all-round development of their children. Additionally, it’s quite necessary for children to communicate with their parents. Have you got any rooms available?‎ W: Yes, would you like a single room or a double room?‎ M: A double room.‎ W: How many nights would you like to stay?‎ M: We are only staying overnight. We’ll check out tomorrow morning. How much is it?‎ W: It’s $68 per night.‎ M: OK. Do you accept credit cards?‎ W: Yes, we do. Now your room number is 204. But I do need help with finding a place to park the car. So Sarah doesn't see it. Can you phone her husband and ask him where it is best to park our car.‎ W: OK. I’m calling him now.‎ Text 8‎ M: Hi, Julia. It’s Robert. How are you? I didn’t see you in class today and I wondered if you were alright.‎ W: Oh, yes. I’m better now, but I decided to take the day off as I woke up with a slight cold. It's really so nice you called.‎ M: Julia, I’ve got you a copy of the main points of the lecture. It was just an introduction to French impressionist paintings.‎ W: I see. I can read it then before the next class.‎ M: Err, Julia, I’m calling as I wonder if you are free on Saturday night. My friend Max is having a party and I’d like to know if you want to go.‎ W: That would be really nice. I’ll be free then. What time shall we go?‎ M: How about meeting in the Student Union Bar at 7:00?‎ W: That’ll be fine. But shouldn’t we buy a present for Max?‎ M: Well, we can stop at the gift shop on the way.‎ W: Fine, I’ll see you then.‎ Text 9‎ W: Excuse me. I’m doing research on bus service. Could I get you to answer a few questions? It won’t take long.‎ M: OK. I’d like to help.‎ W: Thanks. How often do you take a bus, every day, less than once a week or somewhere in between?‎ M: I go to school by bus. So it’s usually twice daily, Line Four.‎ W: I see. Could you rate its service? If 1 is poor, 2 is fair, and 3 is good, which number would you choose?‎ M: I would say 2. The drivers are nice. The buses are clean and the seats are comfortable, but it’s sometimes unreliable. There should be a bus every ten minutes. But yesterday morning I waited almost twenty minutes before the bus came and was almost late for school.‎ W: Oh, that's too bad. Do you have some suggestions for the bus company?‎ M: Try to have the buses arrive on time, of course, and um, there can be a map on the bus. You know some passengers cannot use the guidebook very well.‎ W: Thank you very much for your help.‎ M: You are welcome.‎ Text 10‎ ‎ Hello, everyone. It is indeed a great pleasure to have this chance to address such a large audience this evening. I’m Pierre Chabrol from the University of Marseille. At the moment I’m carrying out a research in Senegal for the United Nations as a part of ‎ project to increase the world food production. Before I get on to what exactly we did in our research, I would like to explain briefly the purpose behind it. Quite simply my subject is rice. As you all know, rice is the main food for millions of people in the world. So if the rice crops fail, millions of people starve and die. And they do fail, very often through disease. Now what my colleagues and I have been doing out in the field in Senegal as well as in the university laboratories is to try to produce a disease-resisting variety of rice, a particular kind of rice, which will resist disease, in other words, a stronger type of rice.‎ 完型解析 第36题  本题考察的是动词词组认知和对下文的理解,从后面give it a go (试一下)知道,作者对于马拉松的态度是积极的,因此选择B take up表示开始从事(一项新工作,或者新的兴趣爱好)。 But studies suggest that involving children in meal preparation is an important first step in getting them to try new foods, In one study, nearly 600 children from kindergarten to sixth grade took part in a ‎ nutrition curriculum intended to get them to eat more vegetables and whole grains 以及 The researchers found that children who had cooked their own foods were more likely to eat those foods in the cafeteria, and even ask for seconds, than children who had not had the cooking class可知,那些参与了食物烹饪的孩子更愿意尝试新食物,由此可推知,这样的孩子更可能保持均衡的饮食。‎ ‎62. In one study of 5-year-old girls about dieting, one child noted-that dieting involved drinking chocolate milkshakes, because her mother was using Slim-Fast drinks 根据最后一段中的kids are tuned into their parents’ eating preferences and are far more likely to try foods if they see their mother or father eating them 可知,作者认为,孩子们很可能与父母的饮食爱好一致,接下来作者举了一个反面例子 parents who are trying to lose weight should be careful of how their dieting habits can influence a child's perceptions about food and healthful eating,家长如果节食的话可能会影响孩子对于食物以及健康饮食的理解。 根据since the iPhone made its debut得知主句中谓语动词要用现在完成时,故填have included 。 ‎
