A “If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!” That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it. With your skin (皮肤), you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music. All children soon learn what “Don’t touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy: food, clothes. To see something well, we have to touch it. The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet. There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them! Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show. If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see! 1. By touching things ______. A. you will have a strange feeling B. you can learn more about them C. you will learn how to reach out your hand D. you can tell what colors they really are 2. You can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket with ______ A. your fingers. B. your eyes. C. your feet. D. your back. 3. What does the underlined word “it” refer to? A. Touching is helping us to see things better. B. Feeling things is a good way for us to learn. C. We can't feel the things on show in any museum. D. Our skins may help us to feel the sounds of music. B Odland remembers like it was yesterday working in an expensive French restaurant in Denver. The ice cream he was serving fell onto the white dress of a rich and important woman. Thirty years have passed, but Odland can not get the memory out of his mind, nor the woman’s kind reaction. She was shocked, regained calmness and, in a kind voice, told the young Odland. “It is OK. It wasn’t your fault.” When she left the restaurant, she also left the future Fortune 500 CEO with a life lesson: You can tell a lot about a person by the way he or she treats the waiter. Odland isn’t the only CEO to have made this discovery. Instead, it seems to be one of those few laws of the land that every CEO learns on the way up. It’s hard to get a dozen CEOs to agree about anything , but most agree with the Waiter Rule. They say how others treat the CEO says nothing. But how others treat the waiter is like a window into the soul. Watch out for anyone who pulls out the power card to say something like, “I could buy this place and fire you,” or “I know the owner and I could have you fired.” Those who say such things have shown more about their character than about their wealth and power. The CEO who came up with it, or at least first wrote it down, is Raytheon CEO Bill Swanson. He wrote a best-selling book called Swanson’s Unwritten Rules of Management. “A person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter, or to others, is not a nice person,” Swanson says. “I will never offer a job to the person who is sweet to the boss but turns rude to someone cleaning the tables.” 5. What happened after Odland dropped the ice cream onto the woman’s dress? A. The woman comforted him. B. He was blamed. C. He was fired. D. The woman left the restaurant at once. 6. Odland learned one of his life lessons from ________. A. an article in Fortune B. the advice given by the CEOs C. his experience as a waiter D. an interesting best-selling book 7. According to the text, most CEOs have the same opinion about ________. A. Fortune 500 companies B. the Management Rules C. Swanson’s book D. the Waiter Rule 8. From the text we can learn that ________. A. one should be nicer to important people B. CEOs often show their power before others C. one should respect others no matter who they are D. CEOs often have meals in expensive restaurants C If you like traveling, you can go to the following cities. Marrakech, Morocco The city is known as the “red city” for its rose-colored buildings. The city’s Medina, an old city, is a really famous place. 1000-year-old monuments(历史遗迹) can be found in Medina. Today, the place is a crowded marketplace with traditional Moroccan goods for sale. The park’s two waterfalls offer great swimming areas. Istanbul, Turkey Turkey’s largest city has one foot in Europe and other in Asia. The city is a great place for history lovers. If you go there, make sure to see Istanbul’s most famous religious buildings: the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. At night, you can try sailing on the Bosporus Strait. It divides this city into the European and Asian areas. Hanoi, Vietnam Vietnam’s capital has tree-lined streets, lakes, and some 600 temples and towers. If you go there, don’t miss the Temple of Literature. It was built in the year 1070. You can also enjoy a slow walk down the Old Quarter’s coffee street. D In 1975, George Carlin appeared on a popular TV show, Saturday Night Live, with his famous words about blue food. “Why is there no blue food? I can’t find blue food—I can’t find the flavor of blue! I mean yellow is lemon; orange is orange and red is cherry. Where is the blue food? ” Well, Carlin pretty much has it right—there’s not no blue food, but there’s certainly not a lot of it. Fresh-picked blueberries are blue, though they become purple when they are turned into jam. The blue in blueberries—like the purple in grapes and the red in tomatoes—is found in nature. But it isn’t a hot color for food. People don’t seem to prefer blue food. Some diet programs even suggest that those determined to lose weight should make their food blue. Eating, in part, begins with our eyes. Charles Spence—an experimental psychologist from Oxford University—points out that color can change our taste experience. Commonly, we consider red-colored foods up to 20% sweeter than they actually are; and green foods as being more sour. Spence suggests: human expectations may be influenced by our long history of watching - green fruits can become sweets they grow up and turn red. But what about blue? Except blueberries, much of the blue food we see these days is dyed blue artificially. Food producers argue that artificial color doesn’t do much harm to health. A lot of research shows that some physical problems of kids are related to food dyes—while other studies show no effects at all. Blue birthday cake or even blue-dyed chicken can be served on the dinner table. So what? 12. George Carlin’s words are placed at the beginning of the passage to _______.
