They found not only a link between drink and violence but also that children who drank were more likely to be hit, even if they weren’t violent themselves.‎ The researchers are now calling for measures to prevent alcohol misuse to reduce injury risks. Current policy focuses on reducing aggression(攻击性行为) but this research shows that there should be equal effort to reduce victimization.‎ More than 4,000 children were surveyed at 13 schools at four local authorities in the North, the Midlands, London, and the South. The study found that 25% of 11-year-olds were drinking monthly and 3.6% daily, with 12.8% admitting to get drunk 3 to 5 times a year. By the age of 16, 40% were drinking weekly and 6.2% were drinking every day. The research also showed 22.6% of 16-year-olds were getting drunk more than 21 times a year.‎ The study, which has just been published in the Journal of Adolescence, found a strong link ‎ between frequency of drinking and frequency of hitting other people.‎ However, children who were reported to drink monthly were also three times more likely to be hit. Adolescents who drank but didn’t get into fights were more likely to be hit than those who did fight.‎ Professor Jonathan Shepherd, who led the research, said a lot of previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders(犯罪者) rather than the victims. His team is calling for more prevention work from parents and teachers in the first two years of secondary school by taking advantage of the “teachable moment”, that is, immediately after a student has missed school because of drunkenness.‎ Previous work by Professor Jonathan Shepherd has shown drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of reduced physical co-ordination, poor decision-making in threatening situations and isolation while out late at night.‎ He said, “This new study seems to be the first to show a direct link between alcohol misuse and victimization. There now needs to be much more effort put into reducing alcohol misuse in order to reduce injury.”‎ ‎21. The main idea of the passage is that teenagers who drink alcohol _____________. ‎ ‎ A. often offend other people B. are more likely to become victims of violence ‎ C. often become injured D. are more likely to fight with others ‎22. Drinkers may be more at risk of violence because of all the following EXCEPT ______.‎ ‎ A. a high frequency of hitting other people B. reduced physical co-ordination ‎ C. isolation while out at night D. poor decision-making in threatening situations ‎23. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to Professor Jonathan’s research?‎ ‎ A. The frequency of children getting drunk increases with age.‎ ‎ B. Some children missed school because of drunkenness.‎ ‎ C. His previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders.‎ ‎ D. This new study shows a direct association between alcohol misuse and victimization.‎ ‎【答案】BAC ‎【解析】1. 根据第一段中的“Teenagers who drink alcohol are at higher risk of becoming victims of violence.” 根据文章倒数第二段中“… because of reduced physical co-ordination, poor decision-making in threatening situations and isolation while out late at night.” 故选A。‎ ‎3. 根据倒数第三段中“Professor Jonathan Shepherd, who led the research, said a lot of previous alcohol-related violence work had focused on the offenders(犯罪者) rather than the victims.” ‎ ‎ B ‎“Angie, I know you like to sing,” her father, a worker, told Angela Brown, “but you must have something to fall back on (依靠).”‎ Brown took her father’s advice. She got a degree in secretarial science before entering Oakwood College, in Huntsville, Alabama. However, her aim was to become a singer at religious meetings. So after graduation she headed for Indiana University to study with the famous soprano (女高音歌手) Virginia Zeani.‎ Once, when Brown was troubled by self-doubt, Zeani said to her, “If you want to be the next Aretha Franklin, you need no more lessons,” Brown remembers her saying. “But if you want to be the best Verdian soprano this world has ever seen, you must work.”‎ Work she did. Three times she competed in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (试演). Three times she failed to make the final round in New York. Then, in 1997 at age 33, the age limit for sopranos to audition, she gave it one more try. She signed up at the last minute and didn’t even practice, thinking, “All they could do was to tell me no, and that didn’t hurt my feelings anymore.” She had the strength she needed to fall back on if she failed.‎ She won. But making it in New York was just the beginning. It took her three more years to become an understudy (替角) at the Met. But waiting in the wings was fine with her. Finally, her time came. When the featured singer fell ill, Brown earned the chance to sing the lead role in Aida. And The New York Times described her performance as a great success. Angela Brown, who had prepared for 20 years, was an “overnight” successful singer at age 40.‎ ‎24. The underlined words “Aretha Franklin” in Paragraph 3 probably refer to “______”.‎ ‎ A.another teacher B.another singer C.one of Virginia Zeani's students D.an understudy at the Met ‎25. We can learn from the fourth paragraph that Angela Brown _________.‎ ‎ A.failed to make the final round because of her old age B.failed many auditions because she hadn't practiced hard C.cared much about the results of the audition in 1997‎ D.would have lost the last chance if she had failed again in 1997‎ ‎26.When did Angela Brown act as an understudy at the Met?‎ A.From 1997 to 2000. B.From 2000 to 2004.‎ C.From 1997 to 2004. D.From 2000 to 2006.‎ ‎27. Which of the following sayings can best express the message of the passage?‎ ‎ A. No pains, no gains.‎ ‎ B. The early bird catches the worm.‎ ‎ C. Never too old to learn, never too late to turn ‎ D.Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.‎ ‎【答案】BDBC ‎【解析】1. Then, in 1997 at age 33, the age limit for sopranos to audition, she gave it one more try"可知,这次试演是Brown的最后一次机会,如不成功她就没机会了。‎ ‎3. ‎ C ‎ Going on a road trip? The St. Louis Arch, Statue of Liberty, and Golden Gate Bridge are common great tourist sites. If you prefer offbeat places, check out the following roadside attractions.‎ World’s Largest Ball of Paint Alexandria, Ind.‎ In 1977, Michael Carmichael set out to create the biggest ball of paint anywhere. Starting with a baseball as centre, he painted layer by layer of paint day after day, year after year. The ball weighs more than 1,300 pounds, with more than 20,000 coats of paint, which is recognized by Guinness World Record. Visitors can paint the wall themselves and become part of the history.‎ The Museum of Dirt Boston, Mass.‎ The museum is the idea of Glenn Johnson. Labeled (贴有标签的) glass bottles contain such treasures as dirt from the Great Wall of China, as well as sand from a desert in Saudi Arabia and Omaha Beach in France. Best of all, the cost of seeing this museum is dirt cheap: It’s free.‎ Mount Horeb Mustard Museum Mount Horeb, Wis.‎ It’s heaven for hotdog lovers! This museum says it has to have the world’s largest collection for prepared mustard(芥末). Its more than 4,100 bottles of spices(香料) come from 60 nations, including Turkey and China. Visitors learn the history of mustard, from how it’s made to how it’s advertised and sold. The museum’s creator, Barry Levenson, loves mustard so much that he even puts it on ice-cream!‎ Paper House Rockport, Mass.‎ Swedish immigrant(移民) Ellis Stenman was much ahead of his time in 1922, when he started to build a two-room house almost entirely out of newspaper. At the time, people didn’t give much---if any---thought to recycling paper. In fact, “recycling” wasn’t even a word yet. The house is framed with wood, but the walls are made of 210 layers of newspaper. In all, he used about 100,000 newspapers. ‎ ‎28. The underlined word “offbeat” in the first paragraph can be best replaced by __________.‎ ‎ A. great B. unusual C. foreign D. historical ‎29. If you want to add your own labour to what you visit, you may choose_____________.‎ ‎ A. World’s Largest Ball of Paint B. The Museum of Dirt ‎ C. Mount Horeb Mustard Museum D. Paper House ‎30. What can be inferred from the text?‎ A.Michael must have the largest ball in the world.‎ B.Glenn must have paid a visit to China.‎ C.Ellis could be seen as a pioneer in his time.‎ D.Barry loves ice-cream especially.‎ ‎31. From the text, we can learn that ______________.‎ ‎ A. Michael will never stop painting the large ball.‎ ‎ B. people need to pay for visiting the Museum of Dirt.‎ ‎ C. Paper House was completely made of paper ‎ D. Barry founded the Mustard Museum..‎ ‎【答案】BACD ‎【解析】1. 根据前面的“Going on a road trip? The St. Louis Arch, Statue of Liberty, and Golden Gate Bridge are common great tourist sites.” 根据“World’s Largest Ball of Paint”部分中“The ball weighs more than 1,300 pounds, with more than 20,000 coats of paint, which is recognized by Guinness World Record. Visitors can paint the wall themselves and become part of the history.” 故选A。‎ ‎3. 根据“Paper House”部分中“Swedish immigrant(移民) Ellis Stenman was much ahead of his time in 1922, when he started to build a two-room house almost entirely out of newspaper. At the time, people didn’t give much---if any---thought to recycling paper.” 根据“Mount Horeb Mustard Museum”部分中“The museum’s creator, Barry Levenson, loves mustard so much that he even puts it on ice-cream!” ‎ D ‎ Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation?‎ UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex(复杂的) than most of us ever imagined.Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest,Simard shows just how wrong he was.In fact, the opposite is true:trees survive through their cooperation and support, passing around necessary nutrition “depending on who needs it”.‎ Nitrogen(氮) and carbon are shared through miles of underground fungi(真菌) networks,‎ making sure that all trees in the forest ecological system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元) in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed,it affects all.‎ Simard talks about “mother trees”,usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” with no awareness of these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed,we are reducing the chances of survival for the entire forest.‎ ‎“We didn't take any notice of it,” Simard says sadly,“Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry(林业),we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future.‎ ‎32.The underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 2 probably means that trees ________.‎ A.compete for survival B.protect their own wealth C.depend on each other D.provide support for dying trees ‎33.“Mother trees” are extremely important because they ________.‎ A.look the largest in size in the forest B.pass on nutrition to young trees C.seem more likely to be cut down by humans D.know more about the complex “tree societies”‎ ‎34.The underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refers to ________.‎ A.how “tree societies” work B.how trees grow old C.how forestry industry develops D.how young trees survive ‎35.What would be the best title for the passage?‎ A.Old trees communicate like humans B.Young trees are in need of protection C.Trees are more impressive than you think D.Trees contribute to our society ‎【答案】CBAC ‎【解析】1. 根据第二段第三句中冒号后的解释"trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition‘depending on who needs it’"可知,树通过合作和支持存活下来。 Simard talks about‘mother trees’...how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation...so they may continue to grow"可知,mother trees是其他树的依靠,它们在即将死亡时会将财富传给下一代,把重要的矿物质传给小树。故选B。‎ ‎3. 本句中的"didn't take any notice of"与第四段最后一句中的"no awareness of"相对应,那么it则指代"complex ‘tree societies’ or the networks on which they feed"。故选A。‎ ‎4. UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined"可知全文主题:树比我们大多数人曾经想象得都要复杂。 ‎ ‎(注意答案填涂方法:E同时涂AB;F涂AC;G涂AD)‎ School doesn’t have to be a prison.
