You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer. The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all. As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. Unfortunately, the cigarette fell into the waste-paper basket, which caught fire. There was a curtain near the waste-paper basket which caught fire, too. Soon the whole room was burning. The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital. The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars. I am very sorry about this. Much love, Susan. P.S. None of the above is true, but I have failed my exams. I just want you to know how bad things could have been! 24. Susan wrote home ________. How true was the letter before the P.S.? A. Partly true. B. All true. C. Completely untrue. D. The story doesn’t really tell us. C Do you want to live a happier, less stressful life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That's how thousands of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world—and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. “Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr. Kataria. “Everyone's naturally good at laughing—it's the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 worldwide. Many doctors are also interested in the effects(效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year-study in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest—I wasn't interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha,” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can't tell the difference between fake laughter and real laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real—and some people just couldn't stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you're under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results! 28. In which country was the first Laughter Club started? A. Britain. B. America. C. Australia. D. India. 29. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class? A. Surprised. B. Pleased. C. Nervous. D. Stressful. 30. When did the people in the club begin to laugh for real? A. After a few minutes. B. After a few hours. C. After a few seconds. D. After a few days. 31. Which of the following is true according to the passage? A. Fake laughter and real laughter are both good for health. B. 40% of the people in Laughter Clubs are good friends. C. Adults laugh more often than children in a day. D. Laughing is the best way to prevent illness. D When I was young, I read many kinds of books, including fairy tales. Most of the books described heroes who were handsome and heroines who were beautiful. So, I believed I had to be beautiful if I wanted to become a great person. As I grew up, I began to realize outer beauty was not so important to make someone good. I remember a friend of mine, Janie, who was so beautiful that every classmate wanted to talk with her, but she was very arrogant(傲慢的). She believed that she could do everything she wanted because she was so beautiful, but she lost friends one by one. My poor friend! But she learned a good lesson: inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. After she learned that, she changed her attitude and made friends again. Whenever I see TV advertisements, I feel that these things make us believe beauty is very important—especially physical attractiveness. Although we say that inner beauty is more valuable, we often look to plastic surgery (整形手术)to make us more beautiful. There seems to be a boom(流行) in plastic surgery. It is surprising to realize the number of people who try it is increasing day by day. We know good-looking guys usually get higher scores on job interviews. So, what is real beauty? I want to say that inner beauty is the real one because if someone has beauty in his soul, he looks like a really beautiful person. The beauty looked at with eyes doesn't last forever. Instead of concentrating on outer beauty, we should concentrate on inner beauty. The point is that inner beauty is more important than outer beauty. So, if we make the effort to make our minds beautiful, we'll be happier. 32. When the author was young, she thought if she wanted to succeed, . A. she must have good looks B. she must learn from the heroes C. she had to work hard at her lessons D. she had to read many kinds of books 33. Why did Janie lose friends one by one? A. Because she was too shy. B. Because she wouldn't take their advice. C. Because she looked down upon others. D. Because she didn't study well at her lessons. 34. What can we infer from the passage? A. Beauty is not related to ability. B. Attractive people can get a job easily. C. Most people focus on inner beauty. D. Most employers think ability is more important. 35. What would be the best title for the passage? A. The Importance of Beauty. B. Beauty Makes One Happier. C. How to Make Oneself Beautiful. D. Inner Beauty Is the Real Beauty. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项。 While serious training is important for all dogs, playtime is just as important. 36.
