B Fifteen years ago, I took a summer vacation in Lecce in southern Italy. After climbing up a hill for a panoramic(全景的) view of the blue sea, white buildings and green olive trees, I paused to catch my breath and then positioned myself to take the best photo of this panorama. Unfortunately, just as I took out my camera, a woman approached from behind, and planted herself right in front of my view. Like me, this woman was here to stop, sigh and appreciate the view. Patient as I was, after about 15 minutes, my camera scanning the sun and reviewing the shot I would eventually take, I grew frustrated. Was it too much to ask her to move so I could take just one picture of the landscape? Sure, I could have asked her, but something prevented me from doing so. She seemed so content in her observation. I didn’t want to mess with that. Another 15 minutes passed and I grew bored. The woman was still there. I decided to take the photo anyway. And now when I look at it, I think her presence in the photo is what makes the image interesting. The landscape, beautiful on its own, somehow comes to life and breathes because this woman is engaging with it. This photo, with the unique beauty that unfolded before me and that woman who "ruined" it, now hangs on a wall in my bedroom. What would she think if she knew that her figure is captured(捕捉) and frozen on some stranger’s bedroom wall? A bedroom, after all, is a very private space, in which some woman I don’t even know has been immortalized(使……永存). In some ways, she lives in my house. Perhaps we all live in each others’ spaces. Perhaps this is what photos are for: to remind us that we all appreciate beauty, that we all share a common desire for pleasure, for connection, for something that is greater than us. That photo is a reminder, a captured moment, an unspoken conversation between two women, separated only by a thin square of glass. 24. What happened when the author was about to take a photo? A. Her camera stopped working. B. A woman blocked her view. C. Someone asked her to leave. D. A friend approached from behind. 25. In the author’s opinion, what makes the photo so alive? A. The rich color of the landscape. B. The perfect positioning of the camera. C. The woman’s existence in the photo. D. The soft sunlight that summer day. 26. The photo on the bedroom wall enables the author to better understand ____________. A. the need to be close to nature B. the importance of private space C. the joy of the vacation in Italy D. the shared passion for beauty 27. The passage can be seen as the author’s reflections upon _____________. A. a particular life experience B. the pleasure of traveling C. the art of photography D. a lost friendship C Before I had my son, I spent two years working with children with disabilities. I learned that shouting and threats of punishment would result in a disaster. Coming up against their behaviour could only make the job harder and their behaviour more extreme. I found something that worked, though. There was a very naughty boy in the nursery and a teacher who was generally very confident with the children was asked to take charge of him. One day the boy joined a session in the room next to mine. His appearance created an atmosphere of tension. He spent the entire session running around, hitting and kicking, and destroying property. I was in the craft room working with some other children when my co-worker told me that this boy’s teacher was in tears, and could not get control of the situation. As we were talking, the boy ran in. I told my co-worker that I would take care of him. I closed the door. He was full of energy, throwing things around and making a huge mess. But I could see that he was doing all these to annoy me. He needed connection, and this was the only way he knew how to ask for it. So I sat back down and kept quiet. Then he slowed down and began making a rocket. I talked to him about it. We continued like this for a few minutes before I slipped into the conversation: “So what happened today?” It was purely a question, no blame or anger in my tone. I believe that if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed. He told me that the teacher didn’t let him do what he knew well due to safety but asked him to do what he disliked. He also admitted that he had enjoyed making him run around and saw it as a game. I explained that his teacher had not seen it as a game and was very upset. This again was stated simply as a fact. I suggested that next time he had a session, he talk about what he hoped to do at the start, which might be easier for everyone. He agreed and was quiet for a moment. Then he looked at me with tears in his eyes before quietly asking if he could go to find his teacher to apologize. 28.The boy made trouble for his teacher because he ______. A. was accused of destroying property B. was told not to yell at other children C. was made to do things against his will D. was blamed for creating an air of tension 29.Why didn’t the author do anything about the boy’s bad behavior at first? A. She didn’t want to make it worse. B. She didn’t mind the huge mess at all. C. She was tired of shouting and threats. D. She hadn’t thought of a coping strategy. 30.The author managed to get the boy to talk to her by ______. A. playing games with him B. giving him a good suggestion C. describing his teacher’s feelings D. avoiding making critical remarks 31.Why did the boy have tears in his eyes in the end? A. He was sorry about his reputation. B. He was regretful about his behavior. C. He was fearful of the author’s warning. D. He was sad for the author’s misunderstanding. D Most Americans are worried about new technology. They are concerned that machines, including robots, will take over work now done by humans. These findings come from a new report by the Pew Research Center of Washington D.C. About 75 percent of Americans questioned by Pew said automation will increase income inequality between the rich and the middle class and poor. And 64 percent of people expect automation to be so common in America that people will face difficulty finding things to do with their lives. Some of the concerns about technology come from a distrust about whether machines will always make the right decision. Many Americans believe humans have better judgement in dealing with complex matters. One example is selecting a person for a job. Three-quarters of Americans said they would not want to apply for a job that uses a computer program to choose the most qualified person. “Most Americans want the government to limit automation. For example, 87 percent support a requirement that all driverless vehicles have a human in the driver's seat who can take control when an emergency occurs. And 85 percent want to limit machines to mostly doing jobs that are dangerous or unhealthy for humans. And only 25 percent expect more jobs to come from automation,” Pew said. Mark Zuckerberg, the cofounder of Facebook, spoke last May to graduating seniors from Harvard University in Massachusetts. His talk centered on the uncertain future facing young people. “Our generation will have to deal with tens of millions of jobs replaced by automation like selfdriving cars and trucks.” Zuckerherg told the graduates. Zuckerberg said young people had better launch (发起) projects that would bring both jobs and direct benefits to the people of the world. He said in his speech that 30,000 people worked to put a man on the moon, and millions of people built the Hoover Dam as well as other great projects over the last 100 years. 32.What do many Americans think of technology according to Paragraph 3? A.Useful. B.Effective. C.Dangerous. D.Undependable. 33.Why do Americans want a human in driverless vehicles? A.To test the new technology. B.To make a driver. C.To ensure personal safety. D.To entertain the passengers. 34.What did Zuckerberg encourage the students to do? A.Refuse selfdriving vehicles. B.Create new job chances. C.Focus on small projects. D.Fight against robots. 35.Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A.New Technology Creates More Jobs B.New Technology Brings More Fairness C.Americans Worry Machines Will Take Jobs D.Robots Make Work Easy to Do for Workers 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项 为多余选项。 I proudly support the fact that some public schools are now choosing to have uniforms(校服). 36 They help students focus more on learning and less on fashion. Just as there are rules on how students can behave, there must be rules on what students can wear. 37 Kids are free from peer pressure (同龄人间的压力),because they don't worry about how popular, fashionable,or expensive their clothes are. Uniforms also prepare students for the real world. 38 So having a uniform teaches students what this is like. When children go home they can wear whatever they please, but they should learn to respect school as a different environment with different expectations, just like they would treat a job. Some argue for the right to personal expression. 39 Hairstyles, backpacks,as well as behavior, all provide opportunities for personal expression. 40 They think families need to spend extra money on uniforms. However, buying a uniform in general reduces the amount of money that many parents spend on “back to school” varieties of new clothes. Uniforms can frequently be found for about the same price as these clothes as well. A.Most jobs require uniforms. B.Uniforms are an important school culture. C.Uniforms create an academic environment. D.Others worry about the expense of uniforms. E.But kids will always find a way to express their style. F.They think uniforms limit students' freedom of expression. G.Uniforms avoid the unspoken social position that exists in the class. Hannah Taylor is a schoolgirl from Manitoba, Canada.
