Now, cheaper travel and the falling cost of healthcare in some counties have made medical tourism affordable for thousands of people who may not have thought about it seriously in the past. The trend (趋势) is growing as a result of the increase in people’s needs for cosmetic surgery (整容手术) and the success of some countries in marketing themselves to medical tourists as inexpensive places for treatment. Whether it is cosmetic surgery in Poland or dentistry (牙科术) in India, medical tourism is becoming more and more popular. A comparison between the cost of treatment in Canada or the UK and the cost in other countries sends thousands of people to foreign hospitals. The long waiting lists in their own country are another reason why people look elsewhere for treatment.‎ Maria Paphitis, a 27-year-old British who is working in London, began visiting Greece for dental work four years ago. “I was told I had to wait weeks for a visit to a specialist in London and my teeth were aching,” she says. “I flew to Greece and was seen by a dentist the same afternoon. And, while the cost of a dental visit in London would have been 110 euro, I was able to have an X-ray and a filling in Greece for a total of 100 euro. It is cheaper, easier and more reliable than going to a dentist in the UK. So, I’ve been back three times since. I have friends in Greece and it’s an easy thing to do.”‎ Of course, the cost for a medical tourism trip to Greece has to be taken into consideration. But as the pressure in healthcare services in many European countries increases with the ageing population, medical tourism looks like it is going to be a popular choice for more and more people in the future.‎ ‎24. What does the author want to do in the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. To introduce what medical tourism is.‎ ‎ B. To explain why medical tourism is popular.‎ ‎ C. To show the importance of medical tourism.‎ ‎ D. To provide some advice for medical tourists.‎ ‎25. Compared to Canada, cosmetic surgery in Poland _______.‎ ‎ A. is less expensive B. is more successful ‎ C. has a longer history D. has a brighter future ‎26. The following are the reason why more people take medical tourism except _______. ‎ A. The cost of travel and healthcare in some countries is falling. ‎ B. Nowadays people earn more money so that they can afford the medical tourism. ‎ C. Some foreign hospitals are well known for their inexpensive places for treatment. ‎ D. The health services in their own countries are not efficient enough.‎ ‎27. What does Maria think of Greek dentists?‎ ‎ A. They are patient. B. They are selfless.‎ ‎ C. They are trustworthy. D. They are warm-hearted.‎ ‎ C For people moving to Australia, Price (2001) has identified certain values which may give rise to cultural shock. Firstly, he argues that Australians place a high value on independence and personal choice. This means that a teacher or course tutor will not tell students what to do, but will give them a number of options and suggest they work out which one is the best in their circumstances. It also means that they are expected to take action if something goes wrong and seek out resources and support for themselves.‎ Australians are also prepared to accept a range of opinions rather than believe there is one truth. This means that in an educational setting, students will be expected to form their own opinions and defend the reasons for that point of view and the evidence for it.‎ Price also comments that Australians are uncomfortable with differences in status and hence idealize the idea of treating everyone equally. An illustration of this is that most adult Australians call each other by their first names. This concern with equality means that Australians are uncomfortable taking anything too seriously and are even ready to joke about themselves.‎ Australians believe that life should have a balance between work and leisure time. As a consequence, some students may be critical of others who they perceive as doing nothing but study.‎ Australian concepts of privacy mean that areas such as financial matters, appearance an relationships are only discussed with close friends. While people may volunteer such information, they may dislike someone actually asking them unless the friendship is firmly established. Even then, it is considered very impolite to ask someone what they earn. With older people, it is also rude to ask how old they are, why they are not married or why they do not have children. It is also impolite to ask people how much they have paid for something. unless there is a very good reason for asking.‎ Kohls (1996) describes cultural shock as a process of change marked by four basic stages. During the first stage, the new arrival is excited to be in a new place, so this is often referred to as the "honeymoon" stage. Like a tourist, they are interested in all the new sights and sounds, new smiles and tastes of their surroundings. They may have some problems, but usually they accept them as just part of the novelty (新奇事物). At this point, it is the similarities that stand out, and it seems to the newcomer that people everywhere and their way of life are very much alike. This period of euphoria may last from a couple of weeks to a month, but the letdown is unavoidable.‎ During the second stage, known as the “rejection" stage, the newcomer starts to experience difficulties due to the differences between the new culture and the way they were accustomed to living. The initial enthusiasm turns into annoyance, frustration, anger and depression, and these feelings may cause people to reject the new culture so that they notice only the things that cause ‎ them trouble, which they then complain about. In addition, they may feel homesick, bored, withdrawn during this period as well.‎ Fortunately, most people gradually learn to adapt to the new culture and move on to the third stage, known as “adjustment". During this stage a transition occurs to a new optimistic attitude. As the newcomer begins to understand more of the new culture, things make more sense and the culture seems more familiar. As a result, they begin to develop problem-solving skills, and feelings of disorientation (迷失方向) and anxiety no longer affect them.‎ In Kohls's model, in the fourth stage, newcomers undergo a process of adaptation. They have settled into the new culture, and this results in a feeling of direction and self-confidence. They have accepted the new food, drinks, habits and customs and may even find themselves enjoying some of the very customs that bothered them so much previously. In addition, they realize that the new culture has good and bad things to offer and that no way is really better than another, just different.‎ ‎28. According to Paragraph 1, teachers may expect students to _____in class in Australia.‎ A. obey teachers' instructions B. ask for advice when necessary C. have a discussion with partners freely D. explore possible solutions by themselves ‎29. Which of the following might most Australians agree with?‎ A. Be just to all, but trust none.‎ B. Truth never fears investigation.‎ C. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.‎ D. Share joy is double joy and sorrow half sorrow.‎ ‎30. What does the underlined word "euphoria” in Paragraph 6 mean?‎ A. Excitement. B. Confidence. C. Anxiety. D. Conflict.‎ ‎31. According to Kohls, if an exchange student from China has managed to host a summer Christmas event though he felt a bit awkward, he might be in Stage _____.‎ A. Four B. Three C. Two D. One ‎32. According to the passage, what is the right attitude towards cultural shock?‎ A. When in a new culture, hold on to our own.‎ B. When in a new culture, accept the good things.‎ C. When facing difference in a new culture, accept it.‎ D. When feeling uncomfortable in a new culture, ignore it.‎ 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Let’s take a minute to think about the water we use. The human body is 60% water and we need to drink lots of water to be healthy. When we are thirsty, we just go to the kitchen and fill a glass with clean water.‎ ‎ 1 For example, farmers, who produce the food we eat, use water to make the plants grow. When we turn on a light or switch on a TV or a computer, we use energy and we need water to produce this energy.‎ The truth is that we are lucky enough to have clean water whenever we want, but this is not the case for many people around the world. 2 That’s around one in 10 people in the world. If we drink dirty water, we can catch diseases from the bacteria and become ill. Every year over 500,000 children die from diarrhea (腹泻) from dirty water. That’s around 1,400 children every day! Also, in some countries children walk many kilometres every day to get water. 3 Therefore, they don’t have time to learn how to read or write and don’t get an education.‎ ‎ 4 On this day every year, countries around the world hold events to educate people about the problems of dirty water and that clean water is something that everyone should have around the world. At one school in the UK, children between the ages of 10 and 15 walk ‎6km with six litres of water. 5 People give them money to do this and all the money helps get clean water to as many people as possible around the world.‎ A. We use water indirectly too.‎ B. Every system in our body depends on water to function.‎ C. It is to inspire people to learn more about water-related problems.‎ D. If children walk many hours a day to get water, they can’t go to school.‎ E. Did you know that around 750 million people do not have clean water to drink? ‎ F. In 1993 the United Nations decided that March 22nd is the World Day for Water.‎ G. It is often described as “a class of one”, because you work alone. You study at your own pace, at a time and place convenient for you. These courses can help you get a degree, help your career, or help you learn what interests you.‎ One type of independent learning is the correspondence course. In a correspondence course, a ‎ school sends you textbooks, study guides, and materials such as video and audio discs. You communicate with your teacher by mail. Your teacher reads your papers and makes comments. Your marks are recorded by the school before they are mailed back to you.‎ A newer style of independent learning is e-learning. With e-learning, you study using computer software or the Internet. You can learn on your own, or you can enroll on a course. Usually, in an e-learning course, students communicate with their teachers through e-mail.‎ However, some students have been using video recently. This allows the teacher and the students to see and communicate with each other at the same time.‎ Independent learning gives you the freedom to adapt your learning to your lifestyle. However, it requires self-discipline and hard work, so not everyone is successful at it. Those who are successful receive a real sense of achievement and satisfaction.‎ 高一年级英语周测一答案 参考答案 一、听力测试(30分)‎ ‎1~5 ABBAC 6~10 BCACB 11~15 ACACB 16~20 AAACC 二、阅读(40分)‎ ‎21~25 BABBA 26~30 BCDCA 31-32 BC ‎ 七选五:‎ ‎1~5 AEDFG 三、语言知识运用(30分)‎ 完型填空:‎ ‎1-5 CBDCA 6-10 ABDCB 11-15 CADBA 16-20 CDDBA 语法填空:‎ ‎1. the 2. have expressed 3. Get a new phone?‎ M: No, it will be repaired at the phone shop where Toby’s dad works. But it’ll take about a week.‎ W: Wow! I’d be going crazy!‎ M: Me too! When Andrew turned 10, their father passed away after a long battle with cancer. Dave knew he was the only positive male role model for Andrew. The next year, Dave got his driver’s license and started driving his brother everywhere his father used to: school, soccer practice, friends’ houses, summer camp…anywhere Andrew needed to be. He also got a part-time job in the evenings to help his mother with the family expenses. Dave never thought about himself; he was always tired, but he knew he was doing the right thing. Several years later, Andrew was getting ready to graduate from high school at the top of his class. The headmaster asked him to give a speech in front of the whole school. The head of the entire school district was going to be there to introduce him. Andrew was honored, and he wrote his speech that night. The day of the graduation arrived. Dave was in the audience, along with his mother. Andrew said that he owed all his success to his older brother. He thanked Dave for showing him how to be a better person and a stronger man for his family. With ‎ tears in his eyes, he told Dave that their father was proud of both of them. Dave smiled through his own tears, because he finally knew it had all been worth it. ‎
