I was a total outsider and bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.‎ But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a love for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.‎ Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.‎ After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.‎ Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.‎ ‎24. What happened to the author when he was 12 years old?‎ ‎ A. He took part in volunteer work. B. He dropped out of school.‎ ‎ C. He suffered school bullying. D. He became a full-time writer.‎ ‎25. What did the author gain through the volunteer work?‎ ‎ A. It made him popular in his town. B. It helped him make more friends.‎ ‎ C. It helped to shape his dream career. D. It helped him understand the meaning of life.‎ ‎26. Why did the author choose writing as his career?‎ ‎ A. He wanted to become famous.‎ ‎ B. He found he had a talent for writing.‎ ‎ C. He was inspired by other teenagers.‎ ‎ D. He wanted to make a positive difference to the lives of teenagers.‎ ‎27. What is the best title of the passage?‎ ‎ A. Say “no” to bullies bravely B. My love for books ‎ C. My dream for writing D. The power of kindness C I received a private message on Facebook. It began harmlessly enough: “Hey, girl. Wanted to invite you to join my next challenge group—we’ll be focusing on fitting in 30 minutes of exercise and balanced nutrition.”‎ It was all becoming too much. Facebook was running my life, not me.‎ But what killed Facebook for me was when I posted a photo, and five minutes later my son asked me ‎ how many “likes” it had got. His question was a wake-up call.‎ ‎“Likes” are signs of acceptance and approval. I had forgotten that acceptance and approval need to come from within and had unknowingly set him a bad example.‎ Before Facebook, surfing the internet was an occasional distraction and I spent a lot more time reading books and magazines. I checked in with friends through texts, emails and phone calls.‎ To recreate the simplicity of those days and set a healthier example to my son, I deactivated my Facebook account.‎ I’d been in the habit of checking Facebook many times a day, so I had to come up with some new habits. I carried a novel and a crossword puzzle book around with me. I rediscovered knitting. I started taking yoga classes.‎ I started to remember a few things. My body is fine just the way it is. I have friends who will help me out when I’m in trouble, and I will help them out. I do my best to be a good mother, and our son is happy and healthy. We are very lucky to be able to afford two vacations a year.‎ I stopped looking at the world through my cellphone. I felt completely present in the moment.‎ The break left me feeling better about myself, my family, my home and my life.‎ After a few weeks, I returned to Facebook. Now I look at the photos of my friends’ kids growing up and treasure how social media allows me to keep in touch with family far and wide. I look in on a daily basis, but no longer with the desire constantly to post updates.‎ It is not an addiction any more.‎ ‎28. What was the author’s life like before her break from Facebook?‎ ‎ A. She spent much time on social media. B. She enjoyed reading in her free time.‎ ‎ C. She didn’t get along well with her son. D. She didn’t care what others thought of her.‎ ‎29. The underlined word “deactivate” in Paragraph 6 is closest in meaning to “________”.‎ ‎ A. update B. close C. keep D. check ‎30. What did the author do to change her life?‎ ‎ A. She developed some healthy habits. B. She went to the gym as often as she could. ‎ ‎ C. She tried to make money for her holidays. D. She traveled around a lot for a year.‎ ‎31. What is the author’s attitude toward social media?‎ ‎ A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. indifferent. D. Objective. ‎ D Some people think going to the gym takes time and effort. It often hurts, and it can be extreme-‎ ly boring. Most weight-related exercises are a combination of sets and reps (几次几组). In order to see any significant change from any one exercise, it will probably need to be repeated six to eight times, for a minimum of three sets, for about three months. Then there' s aerobics (有氧运动). For some, there's nothing more boring than endless miles spent running on a treadmill (跑步机).‎ But what if there is a way to reduce the boredom of exercise while still getting a good workout? Luckily for us, there’s virtual reality (VR).‎ ‎“In the past, playing video games was a sedentary (久坐不动的) experience," says Jo Stauffer of the VR Health-institute, but VR changes all of that. Many VR games are played while standing. In order to play properly, the players are forced to move around swinging their arms or using their legs. After an hour of this on a regular enough basis, it's not surprising that many people unexpectedly find themselves a little fitter. There are already a number of virtual reality games which, deliberately or not, result in their player “getting a good sweat on” if played for enough time. For example, there ‎ is a music game which forces players to shadow box (做空拳攻防练习) in order to hit the notes--‎ that's an upper-body workout.‎ The benefit of VR has been noticed by one company. They want to take the whole experience into the gym. They are making a resistance machine, designed to be used in combination with a VR headset. Players challenge a virtual competitor in a series of games, which results in a 30-minute full-body workout. However, the cost of the equipment is expensive and there are safety concerns to be worked out, says J.P. Gownder from the consultancy Forrester.‎ Although it's early days for those of us who struggle to overcome the boredom of exercise, a new solution could be coming. And a world where a person can exercise and have fun at the same time might be something that many people would want-virtual or not. So don' t give up exercising.‎ ‎32. What conclusion can we draw from the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. Some people think exercising in the gym is difficult and tiring.‎ ‎ B. Most weight-related exercises nearly have no effect.‎ ‎ C. Running on a treadmill won’t bring significant change.‎ ‎ D. You'd better not go to the gym because of the risk of injury.‎ ‎33. Compared with video games, VR games____________.‎ ‎ A. bring more fun to play.‎ ‎ B. take people less free time.‎ ‎ C. are more popular with people nowadays .‎ ‎ D. are more likely to bring players health benefits.‎ 34. What can we know about the resistance machine?‎ ‎ A. There are some disadvantages of it. B. It has been widely used in the gym.‎ ‎ C. J.P. Gownder highly recommends it. D. When using it, people need to have a partner.‎ ‎35. Which is the best title for the passage?‎ ‎ A. Keep going to the gym B. Virtual exercise in the gym.‎ ‎ C. The boredom of exercise D. The popularity of VR games.‎ ‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ How do actors and actresses memorize hundreds of lines? Memorizing lines takes practice and constant repetition. However, there are a few ways to make the memorization process run smoothly and quickly.‎ ‎     36  ‎ ‎ For most performers, there is no quicker way of memorizing lines. To learn lines, an actor must recite the play loud over and over again. Most rehearsals (彩排) encourage this by running through the lines or having a “read through”. By the time opening night arrives, most actors have spoken their lines hundreds of times.‎ ‎ Listen to your cast members.‎ ‎ Sometimes inexperienced actors spend rehearsals just looking at fellow performers, waiting patiently to say their next line. 37    This will help the actor learn his lines better because the context of the dialogue is absorbed.‎ ‎ 38   ‎ ‎ Because there is often not enough rehearsal time, many performers find ways to listen to the play’s dialogue during everyday activities. They use a tape recorder or an MP4 player to listen to the lines from each relevant scene (剧情). Some actors prefer to record the lines of all the characters, including their own.   39   Others like recording the lines of fellow cast members (参演人员), and they leave a blank space so that they can insert their dialogue while listening to the recording. ‎ ‎ Think positively and don’t panic.‎ ‎ Most actors will experience stage fright before the opening night. Actors forget lines now and then. When it happens, however, most of the time the audience never notice. If you forget a line in the middle of your performance, don’t freeze. Stay in character. Keep the scene going to the best of your ability. If unfortunately you forget a line once, you will probably never forget that line ever again.   40  ‎ A. Record your lines. ‎ B. Practice makes perfect. []‎ C. Read lines loud and repeat them.‎ D. Read lines loud and remember them in a flash.‎ E. Sometimes embarrassment is the toughest method of memorization. ‎ F. I play the guitar in my band! ‎ Text 9 ‎ M: Susan, (14) (15) did you ever take that vacation you wanted?‎ W: No, James, (16) I didn’t. I was only going to be able to go if I completed my project at work. I’m still behind schedule, so I won’t be able to take a vacation until next year. (14)‎ M: Oh, that’s really unfair. You’ve been working at that law firm for five years now, and you’re always working late. You deserve a vacation! ‎ W: Well, that’s how it is as a lawyer. Sometimes we have no work, and sometimes we have to work all the time. But I love what I do, so it’s not that bad. (15)‎ M: Oh, I understand. Well, then I guess it won’t be so bad for you to wait a little longer. ‎ W: Yeah. Besides, if I do really well on this project, I won’t only get a longer vacation. I’ll most likely get a higher position as well!‎ M: Nice! That’s better than the advertising firm where I work. (16) They never want to give me more responsibility! Good luck and don’t work too hard!‎ W: Thanks for saying that. (17)‎ M: That’s what friends are for! (17)‎ ‎★ behind schedule: 迟于预定时间 ‎ I’m still behind schedule. 我仍然落后于预定的时间。‎ Text 10 ‎ Welcome to the local news on channel 4 at 10:00 p.m. Tonight, we’re talking about a local high school soccer team that has caught everyone’s eye. He started out playing in goal, but he told his coach that he would be better as a goal scorer. In his first game playing the position, he scored five goals against Wood Ridge, their biggest enemy. (19) Since then, he’s been taking over games, averaging 3.2 goals per game. That number would break the state scoring record for high school play. He is already receiving offers from colleges like UC Santa Barbara, Boston University, and San Francisco State University. Chase says he loves to play in the winter because it is ‎ rainy and cool. He says his teammates gave him the confidence to switch positions. The Wake Hill Eagles will travel to San Francisco for the state championships in March.
