When she was young she took lessons in music and drawing, and read a lot of books. She also travelled a great deal with her mother and father. As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them. At last her mind was made up. “I’m going to be a nurse,” she decided. “Nursing isn’t the right work for a lady,” her father told her. “Then I will make it so,” she smiled. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England,Florence started a nursing home for women. During the Crimean War in 1854 she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was terrible. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any woman to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses went to work. Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicines and food for the men. Her only pay was in smiles from the lips of dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman. After war she returned to England and was honored for her services by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London. She also wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries. Florence Nightingale died at the age of ninety, still trying to serve others through her work as a nurse. Indeed,it is because of her that we honor nurses today. 24.When she was a child,Florence ________. A.loved to travel very much B.knew what her duty in life was C.loved to help the sick people D.was most interested in music and drawing 25.What made Florence determine to become a nurse? A.Her father’s support. B.Her desire to help the sick. C.Her education in Germany and France. D.Her knowledge about Germany and France. 26.During the Crimean War in 1854,Florence served in the front hospital where ________. A.she earned a little money B.work was very difficult C.few soldiers died because of her work D.she didn’t have enough food and clothes 27.Why was Florence honored by Queen Victoria? A.She built the Nightingale Home for Nurses. B.She wrote a book on public health. C.She worked as a nurse all her life. D.She did a great deal of work during the Crimean War. C From the very beginning of school we make books and reading a constant source of possible failure and public humiliation(侮辱). When children are little we make them read aloud before the teacher and other children, so that we can be sure they “know” all the words they are reading. This means that when they don’t know a word, they are going to make a mistake, right in front of everyone. After having taught fifth-grade classes for four years, I decided to try at all costs to rid them of their fear and dislike of books, and to get them to read oftener and more adventurously. One day soon after school had started, I said to them, “Now I’m going to say something about reading that you have probably never heard a teacher say before. I would like you to read a lot of books this year, but I want you to read them only for pleasure. I am not going to ask you questions to find out whether you understand the books or not. If you understand enough of a book to enjoy it and want to go on reading it, that’s enough for me. Also I’m not going to ask you what words mean.” The children sat stunned and silent. Was this teacher talking seriously? One girl, who had just come to us from a school where she had had a very hard time, looked at me steadily for a long time after I had finished. Then, still looking at me, she said slowly and seriously, Mr Holt, do you really mean that “I said just as seriously?” I mean every word of it. During the spring she really astonished me. One day, she was reading at her desk. From a glimpse of the illustrations(插图) I thought I knew what the book was. I said to myself, “It can’t be,” and went to take a closer look. Sure enough, she was reading Moby Dick. I said, “Don’t you find parts of it rather heavy going?” She answered, “Oh, sure, but I just skip over those parts and go on to the next good part.” This is exactly what reading, I think, should be: find something, dive into it, take the good parts, skip the bad parts, get what you can out of it, and then go on to something else. 28.According to the passage, children’s fear and dislike of books may result from ___________. A.reading little and thinking little B.reading often and adventurously C.being made to read too much D.being made to read aloud before others 29.The teacher told his students to read ___________. A.for higher scores in exams B.for knowledge C.for enjoyment D.for a larger vocabulary 30.Upon hearing the teacher’s talk, the children probably felt that ___________. A.it sounded stupid B.it was not surprising at all C.it sounded too good to be true D.it was no different from other teachers’ talk 31.Which statement about the girl is TRUE according to the passage? A.She skipped over those easy parts while reading. B.She had a hard time finishing the required reading tasks. C.She learned to appreciate some parts of the difficult books. D.She turned out to be a top student after coming to this school. D “What kind of rubbish are you?” This question might normally cause anger, but in Shanghai it has brought about weary groans over the past week. On July 1st, the city introduced strict trash-sorting regulations that are expected to be used as a model for our country. Residents must divide their waste into four separate categories and toss it into specific public bins. They must do so at scheduled times, when monitors are present to ensure compliance(服从)and to inquire into the nature of one’s rubbish. Violators face the prospect of fines and worse. They could be hit with fines of up to 200 yuan ($29). For repeat violators, the city can add black marks to their credit records, making it harder for them to obtain bank loans or even buy train tickets. Shanghai authorities are responding to an obvious environmental problem. It generates 9 million tons of garbage a year, more than London’s annual output and rising quickly. But like other cities in China, it lacks a recycling system. Instead, it has relied on trash pickers to sift through the waste, plucking out whatever can be reused. This has limits. As people get wealthier, fewer of them want to do such dirty work. The waste, meanwhile, just keeps piling up. China churns out 80 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks a year. Many residents appear to support the idea of recycling in general but are frustrated by the details. Rubbish must be divided according to whether it is food, recyclable, dry or hazardous(有害的), the distinctions among which can be confusing, though there are apps to help work it out. Some have complained about the rules surrounding food waste. They must put it straight in the required public bin, forcing them to tear open plastic bags and toss it by hand. Most vexing(令人烦恼的)are the short windows for dumping trash, typically a couple of hours, morning and evening. Along with the monitors at the bins, this means that people go at around the same time and can keep an eye on what is being thrown out; no one wants to look bad. 32.What’s the purpose of the first paragraph? A.To introduce the trash-sorting regulations. B.To explain the four categories of the waste. C.To present residents’ complaints about trash dividing. D.To show the goal of trash-sorting regulations. 33.What does the underlined word “Violators” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.People who don’t sort the waste. B.People who argue with the monitors. C.People who don’t throw the trash on time. D.People who are against the regulations. 34.What is the main direct environmental problem in Shanghai? A.The massive traffic. B.The increasing garbage. C.Lack of a recycling system. D.Lack of trash pickers. 35.What makes the residents upset most about the rules? A.Complex distinction among the four categories of trash. B.Short scheduled time for tossing the trash. C.Being observed by monitors when throwing the garbage. D.Being fined when blamed due to improper behavior. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题3分,满分15分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone wants to be a pop star. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a pop star. 36 You get to sing and dance and make voices. People are willing to pay you tons of money and, of course, many fans love you. It’s a perfect life; what could be the problems? 37 And one of the biggest problems is “crazy” fans who love their idols too much. Andy Lau, the Hong Kang superstar, experienced that last year. A fan was so crazy about Andy that she persuaded her parents to spend all their money and travel to Hong Kang to meet him. Andy is a nice man so he met the girl and talked with her for a few minutes. That should have been the end of the story, but it wasn’t! 38 In despair, the father jumped into the sea and said it was because Andy Lau had made him poor and had made his daughter a “crazy” fan. It’s a very sad story and it shows what can happen when ordinary people become crazy pop fans. We like famous persons, and we enjoy listening to them. 39 And some people think that, since they love the pop star, the pop star should love them back. That’s crazy! 40 They have their own families and friends. Their job is to entertain us, not to love us. So, don’t be a “crazy” fan, be a good fan, and just appreciate the joy, the happiness and the excitement that your favorite pop star brings you. A. Well, clearly, there are lots of problems. B. Sometimes we think we know them as well as we know our closest friends. C. It seems like the coolest job in the world. D. The family had spent all their money to meet Andy and they had no money to return home. E. They hated the superstar. F. Pop stars have their own personal lives. G. There is no doubt that exams are important to us students, but it’s more important to have a right attitude towards them. As a matter of fact, exams are no more than a means of evaluating. Therefore, there is no need to worry too much about the results. Only by studying hard every day and making good preparations for exams can we avoid suffering from the pressure of exams. We’d better go out for a walk or do some outdoor exercise before exams. Besides, having enough sleep can make us full of energy and make it possible for us to perform well in the exam, A hot bath or a cup of hot milk before going to bed might help you have a sound sleep. So, my suggestion is: don’t worry about exams, try to relax yourself.查看更多
