Vette first used voice commands and treats to teach the dogs how to turn a steering wheel and how to change gear (换挡).‎ ‎ The dogs’ ride only accelerated up to 7.5 miles an hour, and trainers could stop the auto using a remote control.‎ GOLDEN ZEBRA Kailua-Kona, Hawaii ‎ Zoe the zebra’s markings are special. In the wild, life may be difficult for animals with amelanosis because predators (捕猎者) can easily spot them. But Zoe is protected at her refuge.‎ COCKATOO MAKES TOOLS Vienna, Austria ‎ When Figaro the cockatoo spots food lying just out of reach from his cage, he builds a tiny wooden tool to sweep the tasty prize in his way.‎ ‎ The bird first revealed his talent when a stone he was playing with rolled out of his cage. In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?‎ In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not influence its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.‎ It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的) and do not like change.‎ Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be ‎ the more risky choice.‎ ‎24. What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?‎ A. Most of them are too expensive to preserve.‎ B. Some of them are not attractive.‎ C. They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.‎ D. They are more pleasing than modern buildings.‎ ‎25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?‎ A. Buildings should not dominate their surroundings.‎ B. We should reproduce the same old buildings.‎ C. Some old buildings have spoilt the area they are in.‎ D. No one understands why people speak against new buildings.‎ ‎26. By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means “__________”.‎ A. choose new architectural style ‎ B. put things in a different place ‎ C. rebuild old buildings in a new style D. respect people’s feelings for historical buildings ‎27. What is the main purpose of the passage?‎ A. To explain why people dislike change.‎ B. To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings C. To warn that we could end up living in caves.‎ D. To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas..‎ C I recently ran into a friend I hadn’t seen for a long while. Our conversation was lively and full of news from both sides. Before we parted she said, “You’ll have to drop in sometime.” I immediately sensed that if I simply “dropped in’’ I would take my friend by surprise, and I would be discouraged by the image of her standing in her doorway, staring at me, and asking, “Oh, er… what brings you here?”‎ Whatever happened to the unannounced drop-in visit? When I was growing up in the 1960s, it seemed that people-mostly relatives, but also friends-were always popping in. My parents would put coffee on, and my mom would find something in the kitchen to serve along with it. The neighbor lady, a worrier, was unloading her sadness while my mom quietly listened. My Polish relatives arrived in packs…But I never heard my parents say anything like “We weren’t expecting you’’. Drop-in visitors had a certain right of way and became No. 1. ‎ What happened to such visits? Actually I know the answer. Times have changed. Everybody gets busy with work. There is no longer a stay-at-home mom keeping a pot of hot coffee or tea ready throughout the day for a surprise guest. Exploding malls and stores are now replacing homes as a central form of entertainment. ‎ ‎28. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “drop in” in the second paragraph?‎ A. make many friends B. pay a sudden visit ‎ C. have a good time D. fix a special date ‎29. The woman from the neighborhood used to visit the author’s home to__________‎ A. 1isten to my parents’ story B. meet new friends C. seek comfort from my parents D. taste nice dishes ‎30. From the third paragraph of the passage, we can infer that__________‎ A. the author misses the lost good days B. unexpected visitors are still welcome now C. modern people prefer outdoor activities D. there are more jobs for the housewives now ‎31. What may be the best title for the text?‎ A. Let’s go back to the past B. The days gone with the wind C. Conversation—the bridge between friends D. The lost art of dropping in D Boiler rooms are often dirty and steamy, but this one is clean and cool. Fox Point is a very new 47-unit living building in South Bronx, one of the city’s poorest areas. Two-thirds of the people living there are formerly previously homeless people, whose rent is paid by the government. The rest are low-income families. The boiler room has special equipment, which produces energy for electricity and heat. It reuses heat that would otherwise be lost to the air, reducing carbon emissions(碳排放)while also cutting costs.‎ Fox Point is operated by Palladia, a group that specializes in providing housing and services to needy people. Palladia received support from Enterprise Community Partners (ECP), which helps build affordable housing by providing support to housing developers. ‎ ECP has created national standards for healthy, environmentally clever and affordable homes which are called, the Green Communities Standards. These standards include water keeping, energy saving and the use of environmentally friendly building materials. Meeting the standards increases housing construction costs by 2%, which is rapidly paid back by lower running costs. Even the positioning of a window to get most daylight can help save energy.‎ Michael Bloomberg, New York's mayor, plans to create 165,000 affordable housing units for 500,000 New Yorkers. Almost 80% of New York City’s greenhouse-gas emissions come from buildings, and 40% of those are caused by housing. So he recently announced that the city’s Department of Housing and Preservation and Development (DHPD) , whose duty is to develop and keep the city’s supply of affordable housing, will require all its new projects to follow ECP’s green standards.‎ Similar measures have been taken by other cities such as Cleveland and Denver, but New York’s DHPD is the largest city developer of affordable housing in the country.‎ ‎32. What is the purpose of describing the boiler room in the first paragraph?‎ ‎ A. To show how the environment-friendly building works. ‎ ‎ B. To suggest that affordable housing is possible in all areas.‎ ‎ C. To explain the measures the city takes to care for poor people.‎ ‎ D. To compare old and new boiler rooms.‎ ‎33. What is an advantage of the buildings meeting the Green Communities Standards? ‎ ‎ A. Less air to be lost in hot days ‎ B. Costing less in construction. ‎ ‎ C. Lower running costs.‎ D. Better prices for homeless people.‎ ‎34. It can be learned from the text that__________. ‎ ‎ A. New York City is seriously polluted B. some other cities have developed more affordable housing than New York City ‎ C. a great number of people in New York City don't have houses to live in ‎ D. people’s daily life causes many carbon emissions in New York City ‎ ‎35. What is the main purpose of this text?‎ ‎ A. To call on people to pay more attention to housing problems.‎ ‎ B. To introduce healthy, environmentally clever-and affordable housing.‎ ‎ C. To ask society to help homeless people and low-income families.‎ ‎ D. To prove that some standards are needed for affordable housing.‎ 第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)  ‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。  ‎ It is necessary to be reasonable and flexible enough to avoid conflicts as much as possible and live in peace with others. 36 If you have done all your best to avoid conflicts and you are still arguing, then read these effective tips on how to avoid conflicts.‎ Don’t get in the center of the conflict.‎ Sometimes people can get in the center of conflicts due to their enthusiasm for offering help. Frankly speaking, it is very unwise, because it can make you the main figure of the conflict. 37 You should focus on your own life issues.‎ Be kind.‎ ‎ 38 Life is full of conflicts and disagreements, that’s why you should find more conservative ways of dealing with them. For example, kindness can lessen the conflict.‎ Try to be a peacekeeper.‎ Peacekeepers tend to cooperate with people without bad emotions which usually lead to arguments and even conflicts. “ 39 ” This saying is the life motto of a natural-born peacekeeper. Don’t worry if you are not a natural-born peacekeeper; you can gain this skill during life.‎ Walk off.‎ When the conflict is gathering pace and you can’t manage to control yourself, you should choose to handle the situation in another way. By all means, try to keep yourself away from stress. 40 You should get away from the situation for a while.‎ A. Arguing can either break your friendship or affect your relationship to some degree. ‎ B. It is helpful to put some distance between yourself and the opponent.‎ C. Weak people usually desire others to offer help and support.‎ D. The greatest victory is a battle not fought.‎ E. Conflicts are unavoidable, so try to accept them.‎ F. When someone pushes you to the limit, try to act kindly towards this person.‎ G. Let other people solve their problems without your presence.‎ 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分 45)  ‎ 第一节 完形填空(共 20 小题;每小题 1. 5 分,满分 30 分) ‎ 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C 和 D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。 ‎ As a teenager, I felt I was always letting people down.
