But those people probably would not be rock climbers. The sport science and art of rock climbing is our subject this week. About nine million people go rock climbing in the United States. Millions more take part in the activity around the world. Some do it just for personal satisfaction. Others compete. Rock climbing can be dangerous. But there are many methods and protective devices that can increase a climber's safety. Climbing takes strength, control and good balance. Climbers have to pull themselves straight up the face of very high rocks or walls. So they have to be strong enough to carry their own weight. And climbers sometimes have to hold on to rocks by only their fingers or toes. There are several kinds of rock climbing. Traditional rock climbing is done outside. Climbers wear ropes and attach devices to the rocks as they climb many hundreds of meters up. They also connect their ropes to the devices. If a climber slips, a rope can stop him from falling. Sport climbing is similar. However, in those cases the protective devices are permanently placed in the rock. There is also indoor climbing. Rock walls made of wood or concrete have places for the climber's hands and feet. Ice climbing is exactly as it sounds. People climb glaciers or frozen waterfalls instead of rocks. They use special equipment for the ice. And then there is bouldering-climbing rocks between three and seven meters high. It is a quicker and more intense kind of climbing. Many climbers like bouldering because they can use less equipment. Climbers often need only special shoes and chalk. All members use chalk to keep their hands dry. People almost always climb in groups of two or more. Climbing alone, or"solo climbing”, is very dangerous. Expert rock climbers say only the very best in the sport should do it. 5. When the studio didn't want me for the film-it wanted somebody as well known as Paul-he stood up for me. I don't know how many people would have done that;they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺)and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors:humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other-but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心) of our relationship off the screen. We shared the belief that if you're fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back-he with his Newman's Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill,and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn't see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events. I last saw him a few months ago. He'd been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn't talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn't need a lot of words. 9. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to the author at first? ______ A. He wasn't famous enough. B. The studio powers didn't like his agent. C. Paul Newman wanted it. D. The director recommended someone else. 10. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship? ______ A. They were of the same age. B. They worked in the same theater. C. They were both good actors. D. They had similar characteristics. 11. What does the underlined word"that"in paragraph 3 refer to? ______ A. Their support for each other. B. Their care for children. C. Their success. D. Their belief. 12. What is the author's purpose in writing the test? ______ A. To show his love of films. B. To remember a friend. C. To introduce a new movie. D. To share his acting experience. D When we were very small, we realized that having friends was important. Some of us even had imaginary(想象中的)friends. The need for friends continued as we grew into our teens. Friends played a big part in forming our personalities(性格). As adults, it is still important for us to have friends. True friends are people who like us though we made mistakes and who listen to us and tell us the truth. Friends support our decisions and tell us when we’re foolish. They laugh with us and share our sadness. They are our partners and share interests with us. They stimulate us when we are feeling down. They are people we aren’t afraid of telling our secret wishes to or what is really on our minds. Friends are our supporters. When you can depend on friends, you feel safe and warm. Friends offer acceptance and emotional(情感的)support. At times, they also help with our everyday lives, cooking a meal, doing chores, or giving us a lift when we need one. Friends also are there to offer advice, an ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry on. Friends also help us reduce stress. Not only do they listen to us when we feel stressed, but they also discuss what is stressing us. Sharing interests and doing activities with friends help us forget about problems at work or at home. For a short time, we can lose ourselves in a pleasant activity and perhaps laugh and breathe more easily. 13. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Importance of Friends B. How to Make New Friends C. How to Reduce Stress D. The Qualities of Good Friends 14. The underlined word “stimulate” in Paragraph 2 probably means________. A. educate B. encourage C. surprise D. dislike 15. We can learn from the third paragraph that friends always________. A. laugh at us when we’re foolish B. tell us other people’s secrets C. share our sadness and interests D. support us when we need help 第二节 (共5小题,每小题3分,满分15分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项 Finding your dream job can be difficult.
