Green, yellow, white or red, she thought they were the most disgusting vegetable in the supermarket. Erika’s father, on the other hand, lived for onions. He put them on everything—salads and sandwiches, toast and eggs. He liked them raw, fried or roasted to a crisp. But there was no way of cooking onions that made him happier than the one he sang about every week: caramelized(焦糖化). It never failed to spoil Erika’s weekend. One Friday, she couldn’t stand it anymore. When the first notes of “Green Onions” sounded, Erika stood her ground. “D-a-d,quit it!” “You don’t like my song?” “No! I hate your song. But not nearly as much as I hate your onions. ” “You hate caramelized onions?” he asked. “But, why?” Erika could have ranted(碎碎念) for an hour, but she was too angry to talk. All she could say was, “Because they’re gross!” “Have you ever tried them?” “Well…no. ” “Then how do you know they’re gross?” “Because they’re brown and gooey, and they smell like old socks. ” “I’ll make you a deal. You try a cheeseburger with these onions on it, and if they’re as bad as you say they are, I’ll eat anything you want. ” “Anything? Like a jar of paint?” “It has to be food. ” “Deal. Call me when they’re ready. ” “Ah, ah,” said Dad, handing Erika a knife. “You’ve got to help me make them, too. ” “What?!” “If you watch it happen, I think you won’t be so freaked out. ” “Fine. C Earlier today, a volcano erupted on New Zealand’s White Island for the first time in nearly two decades. Early reports indicate that the event has already claimed at least five lives, and emergency recovery efforts are still underway. Unlike some volcanic events at known hot spots, the volcano provided little hint that it was ready for an eruption, making it difficult for officials to warn visitors that the destructive event was a- bout to occur. As CNN reports a group of 23 visitors was near the volcano shortly before it erupted. The five individuals who have been confirmed dead were from that group, while everyone else suffered a vari- ety of injuries. The visitors that were on the island were members of a tourist group from a cruise ship known as Ovation of the Seas. The vessel is operated by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. At the moment, it’s not believed that there is anyone else on the island. “Based on the information we have, we do not believe there are any survivors on the island,” a police statement explains. “Police is working urgently to confirm the exact number of those who have died, further to the five confirmed deceased already. ” Tourists who said they were on the island just shortly before the eruption shared videos of the volcano spitting dust and debris on social media. As can be seen in the brief video here, the entire island appears as though it’s been swallowed up by the volcanic smoke and dust. Additional video shot from a different location appears to show tourists stuck on the island, near the shore, away from the site of the eruption. Boats from other tour groups picked up others who were attempting to flee, but the confused na- ture of the rescue efforts has left some still unaccounted for. Rescue crews are continuing their efforts as we speak. 28. Based on the passage, which of the following is NOT true about the volcano? A. It has been sleeping for about twenty years. B. Officials failed to warn visitors of its eruption. C. It is a must-go attraction for tourists to the island. D. Its eruption produced large amounts of smoke and dust. 29. According to the police statement in the passage, what conclusion can we draw? A. All survivors have been rescued from the island. B. Tourists should stay away from the erupting volcano. )页01共(页5第 诊二语英 C. There can’t be more deaths except for the five confirmed ones. D. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line is responsible for the loss of lives. 30. What can be inferred from the passage? A. This volcano is not an active one. B. The exact number of deaths remains unknown. C. New Zealand’s White Island is not a hot scenic spot. D. The other 18 tourists of the group are still stuck on the island. 31. Where is this passage most likely to appear? A. In a newspaper. B. On the Internet. C. In a magazine. D. On TV. D Hearing loss is unavoidable, but listening to loud music when you’ re younger can make it worse. To reduce your risk of hearing loss via loud music, learn why and how it can cause hearing loss, and just how loud is too loud. Hearing loss occurs in four ways: conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, mixed hearing loss and auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder. Noise-induced(噪音诱发的) hearing loss is a type of sensorineural hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss occurs when your inner ear becomes damaged. In the case of noise- induced hearing loss, most of the damage affects the cells of tiny sensory hairs in your inner ear. When those cells get damaged or die, the electrical signal that your auditory nerve sends to your brain changes. Noise-induced hearing loss can be acute or severe, and it can be temporary or permanent. You might be familiar with acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss, even if you didn’t realize what was happening at the time. Acute temporary noise-induced hearing loss can occur from attending a loud concert or sporting event, going to a gun range without earmuffs or being near an explosion. It can make noises sound “stuffy” or far away, especially when talking on the phone or in a crowded room. Repeated exposure to those loud situations can eventually lead to permanent hearing loss. Noise levels from earbuds and headphones can get as loud as 139 decibels, according to the journal Noise & Health, far greater than the recommended range of everyday sound exposure, which is 60 to 85 decibels. And the average level of noise from headphones, with the volume turned all the way up, is 94 to 110 decibels. For context, 60 decibels is about the volume of an average conversa- tion, and 130 decibels is about the noise level of a rock concert. 85 decibels is considered the maxi- mum volume at which you can listen to sound for eight hours without damaging your hearing. So if you were to listen to music from your headphones for eight hours a day, listening at a volume louder than 85 decibels can cause permanent damage to your ears. Unfortunately, the relationship between decibels and time isn’ t linear. For every three deci- bels, safe exposure time gets cut in half, according to the CDC. At 88 decibels, you can only safely listen for four hours; at 91 decibels, just two hours. )页01共(页6第 诊二语英 32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph One refer to? A. Hearing loss. B. B. Half an hour. C. One hour. D. One and a half hours. 35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage? A. Loud Music Damages Hearing B. How to Prevent Hearing Loss C. Text 10 Hello, everyone. I’m the art teacher Beck Alter. I am going to announce a piece of excit- ing news to you! That is. . . we decide to raise a dog named Penny in our school! And Penny is a black dog and only 30 days old. Today Penny will make her first appearance. Penny will work on a project called Raising a Guide Dog by Students. As we know, a guide dog is a dog especially trained to guide a blind person. When Penny grows up to 49 days old, she will be tested for intelligence and personality. If she can pass the test, she will become a guide dog for the blind. Everyone is welcome to join in this project. And each class has different duties as follows. Some students will help run a special Internet page all about Penny on the website. In speech and communication class, students will write the questions and conduct the interviews on Penny’s website. Students in English class will write the diary information that appears on Penny’s page and respond to all the e-mails addressed to Penny! The geography class will help them to do the same work. In life skills class, students with behavior problems or learning disabilities will look after pet Penny. And it will teach the students about the responsibilities of caring for a dog and improve their behavior, too. And in art class, Penny needs to do nothing and spends much of her day in a very comfortable place. But she isn’t ignored! Students pet her and scratch her ears. )页6共( 页6第案答语英级7102高查看更多
