B My First Marathon(马拉松) A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead. I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was "not athletic". The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills! The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted! At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!" By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again. By mile 21, I was starving! As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running. I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had. Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a "marathon winner". 24. The author ___________a month before the marathon. A. made up his mind to run B. lost hope C. felt frightened D. was well trained 25. Why did the author mention the P.E. class in his 7th year? A. To acknowledge the support of his teacher. B. To show he was not talented in sports. C. To amuse the readers with a funny story. D. To share a precious memory. 26. How was the author’s first marathon? A. He got the first prize. B. He gave up halfway. C. He walked to the end. D. He made it. 27. What is the main idea of the story? A. Failure is the mother of success. B. One is never too old to learn. C. A winner is one with a great effort of will. D. A man owes his success to his family support. C While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage. Their efforts have been proven fruitful. Wang Shu, a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize — which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture — on February 28. He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award. Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA). His office is located at the Xiangshan campus(校园) of the university in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by its unique view. Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages. He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素). Wang’s works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions. Through such a balance, he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize. Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums. "That is only evidence that traditions once existed," he said. "Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past. In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created, " he said. The study of traditions should be combined with practice. Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty, he said. 28. Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “fruitful” in paragraph 2? A. rich B. productive C. successful D. unknown 29. What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most? A. Its hilly environment. B. Its diverse functions. C. Its large size. D. Its unique style. 30. What made Wang’s architectural design a success? A. The harmony of old and new. B. The use of popular techniques. C. The balance of East and West. D. The mixture of different shapes. 31. What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang? A. Spread them to the world. B. Preserve them at museums. C. Teach them in universities. D. Recreate them in practice. D “Years ago when I was at the Grand Canyon, I remembered someone coming up to the canyon’s edge, taking a shot with a camera and then walking away, like ‘got it – done’, barely even glancing at the magnificent scene in front of him,” Linda Henkel, a scientist at Fairfield University, US told Live Science. Henkel was surprised by how obsessed (痴迷的) people are with taking pictures these days - before dinner, during friends’ birthday parties, on museum tours and so on. They keep taking pictures because they think that it helps record the moment, but as Henkel’s latest study has just found out, this obsession may prevent their brains remembering what actually happened, reported The Guardian. In her study, Henkel led a group of college students around a museum and asked them to simply observe 15 objects and photograph 15 others. The next day the students’ memory of the tour was tested, and the results showed that they were less accurate in recognizing the objects and they remembered fewer details about them if they photographed them. ‘‘When people rely on technology to remember them — counting on the camera to record the event and thus not needing to attend to it fully themselves, it can have a negative impact on how well they remember their experiences,” Henkel explained. “But there is also an exception.” Henkel added, “ If students zoomed(缩放) in to photograph part of an object, their memory actually improved, and those who focused the lens (镜头) on a specific area could even recall parts that weren’t in the frame.” Constantly taking pictures can harm your memory. But shouldn’t reviewing pictures we have taken help wake up our memories? This is true, but only if we spend enough time doing it. 32. Why did the author mention Henkel’s trip to the Grand Canyon at the beginning? A. To complain about some tourists’ bad habits. B. To give suggestions on how to enjoy one’s tour. C. To point out people’s obsession with taking pictures. D. To describe the beautiful view of the Grand Canyon. 33. Which of the following statements about Henkel’s study is TRUE according to the passage? A. Reviewing pictures always helps people bring back memories easily. B. Taking pictures in a museum tour helps students recognize objects better. C. People should spend more time taking pictures than studying real objects. D. Pictures focusing on the details of objects probably improve people’s memories. 34. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 probably refers to? A. the camera B. technology C. the event D. an object 35. What is the article mainly about? A. People’s obsession with taking pictures and its influence. B. Possible ways of using pictures to improve one’s memory. C. Great harm to memory caused by taking pictures constantly. D. A believable study into the negative impact of lining cameras often. 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! With such busy lives, it can be hard to try and find the time to work out. 36 Working out in the morning provides additional benefits beyond being physically fit. ●Your productivity is improved. Exercising makes you more awake and ready to handle whatever is ahead of you for the day. 37 ●Your metabolism(新陈代谢) gets a head start. 38 If you work out in the mornings, then you will be getting the calorie(卡路里)burning benefits for the whole day, not in your sleep. ● 39 Studies found that people who woke up early for exercise slept better than those who exercised in the evening. Exercise energizes you, so it is more difficult to relax and have a peaceful sleep when you are very excited. ● 40 If you work out bright and early in the morning, you will be more likely to stick to healthy food choices throughout the day. Who would want to ruin their good workout by eating junk food? You will want to continue to focus on positive choices. There are a lot of benefits to working out, especially in the mornings. We all feel that having a knowledge of first aid is of vital importance. As we know, accidents and injuries can occur anytime and anywhere. Being prepared for emergency situations and being able to give first aid when needed can make a difference in a severe injury before proper medical treatment is given. Therefore, we suggest that our school should launch some related activities to publicize the knowledge of first aid. For instance, lectures on first aid can be offered, from which we can learn more professional knowledge in various situations. What’s more, posters about the treatment for different injuries can be put up in every corner of our campus. Finally, our school can organize the rescue drills to provide a stage for students to practice and gain hands-on experience in first aid. I’m looking forward to your solid support. But before we buy tickets, we like to know if the play is good or bad. Last week, a new play opened at the theatre. The newspaper said it was very interesting so we decided to go on Saturday night. My wife took a long time to make up her mind what to wear and we left our house a little late. By the time we got to the theatre, the first act had already begun. We were sorry we missed part of the play, because the rest of it was very funny. The newspaper had been right. It was very good. After the play was over, we met some old friends we hadn’t seen for a long time. They wanted to go to a nightclub. It had been many years since my wife and I went dancing, but I finally agreed. By the time we got home, it was about two o’clock in the morning. I’m not used to staying out so late and I was extremely tired. 查看更多
