If you answered more happy, then you were right, based on a study published two years ago. It found that people generally become happier and experience less worry after the age of 50. In fact, it found that by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were at 18. The findings came from a Gallup survey of more than 340,000 adults in the US in two thousand and eleven. At that time, the people were between the ages of eighteen and eighty-five. Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 22 and 25. Stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties. Happiness was highest among the youngest adults and those in their early seventies. But the people least likely to report feeling negative emotions were those in their seventies and eighties. The survey also found that men and women have similar emotional patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men did. The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age. So why would happiness increase with age? One theory is that, as people get older, they become more thankful for what they have and have better control of their emotions. They also spend less time thinking about bad experiences. The findings appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 21. How does this passage introduce the topic? A. By giving examples. B. By offering the concept of happiness. C. By making a survey. D. By asking and answering a question. 22. Which of the following is TRUE about the study led by Arthur Stone? A Levels of stress increase as one gets older. B. People felt happiest when they are fifties. C. People become happier as they get older. D. Most of the people in their seventies and eighties feel happy. 23. What is the possible reason why happiness would increase with age? A. People will do less work. B. People become more grateful and control their emotions better. C. Their children have all grown up. D. People won’t be afraid of losing jobs. 24. The author’s attitude towards study is ________. A. negative B. objective C. pessimistic D. optimistic B Kids who chat regularly with their fathers are happier than kids who don’t, according to a new study. Children who converse with their fathers “most days” considered themselves 87 out of 100 on a happiness degree, while those who rarely talk to their dads scored 79. The study results called the findings “highly important”, because research has proved that a person’s well-being(幸福感) later in life has something to do with their relationship with both parents during the teen years. Dads may not have as many meaningful conversations with their kids as moms, but they tend to play with them more than moms do, and research shows that’s important for kids’ development. There are now studies showing that this kind of play supports healthy exploration later on in kids’ life. Studies also show that dads often give power to their children and encourage them to explore and meet new people. And dads tend to be more in charge of playtime than moms, too. “Mothers help children feel connected, expected and wanted,” said Professor Patrick Tolan. “Fathers teach them how to interact with others and how to control themselves when they feel their needs aren’t being met.” One study from the University de Montreal observed parents interacting with their kids while the children were put into “risky” situations. For one experiment, a stranger came up to toe the kids and in another, the kids saw toys placed at the top of a flight of stairs. While the rooms stayed closer, the dads followed their kids at a greater distance, which researchers said encouraged kids to explore. “We found that fathers are more likely than mothers to activate exploratory behavior by being less protective,” Daniel Paquette said. And as any independent-minded child knows, the chance to explore without an overprotective mom on board leads to even more happiness. 25. The underlined phrase “converse with” in Paragraph 2 may mean “_____”. A. talk with B. compete with C. work with D. play with 26. If dads play with kids, kids ______________. A. will become more violent in later life B. will be active in finding more in life C. will have no pity for others D. will treat their parents better 27. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Regular time with dads is key to kids’ happiness. B. Kids like to play with dads rather than moms. C. Risky situations make moms worry about kids. D. Moms are more protective than dads to kids. C About 5,000 children die each day because of preventable diseases such as cholera(霍乱) and dysentery(痢疾), which spread when people use unclean water for drinking or cooking. A lack of water for personal health leads to the spread of totally preventable diseases like trachoma(沙眼), which has blinded some six million people. Water troubles also trap many low-income families in a cycle of poverty and poor education and the poorest suffer most from lack of access to water. People who spend much of their time on ill health, caring for sick children, or collecting water at a distance averaging 3.75 miles a day don’t have educational and economic chances to better their lives. Agriculture is called the lion’s share of freshwater worldwide, using some 70%, and industrial use needs another 22%. Water areas have no political borders and nations don’t always work together to share common resources, so water can be a frequent source of international problems as well. Day-by-day demand keeps growing, further needing water sources, from great rivers to groundwater. “We’re going deeper into debt on our groundwater use,” Postel said, “and that has great effects on global water safety. The rate of groundwater use has doubled since 1960.” Some of Earth’s groundwater is fossil water created when Earth’s climate was far different. Today such water is as limited as petrol. “But we’re pumping much of them out faster than ever,” Postel explained. “Man’s growing thirst also causes a major problem about water and our ecosystems. And that also creates a cost to us, to our sons and to our grandsons, not just to nature.” 28. What does the author mainly discuss in the passage? A. Water shortage has been the most serious challenge. B. So many children die of polluted water every day. C. Diseases should be properly controlled and treated. D. Wasting water leads to the unrest of the world. 29. Why is agriculture called the lion’s share of freshwater? A. Because agriculture is much stronger than industry. B. Because more people live on the agricultural produce. C. Because agriculture uses about two-thirds of freshwater. D. Because nations don’t always work together to save water. 30. According to what Postel said we can know ____________. A. groundwater is rich for us to use B. there is no need to dig deep for groundwater C. we are using our next generations’ water D. we should use river water instead of groundwater 31. What can we infer from the passage? A. We shouldn’t use water from rivers. B. We should protect our ecosystems. C. Water should be distributed equally. D. Laws should be passed for groundwater. D Texting pedestrians aren’t just an annoyance to their fellow walkers, but a danger to themselves. “I was checking emails while walking to work this morning,” said Wolbert van den Hoorn. “But it has a serious influence on the safety of people who type or read text while walking.” Anecdotes back him up. A tourist from Taiwan walked off a port near Melbourne last month while checking Facebook-bringing an abrupt and icy end to a penguin-watching visit. Another shopper in the U.S. was too addicted to his mobile phone to notice the fountain ahead, walking straight into it. And as mobile-phone users have grown to about 77% of the world’s population, the study says so has the number of phone-related accidents. The number of U.S. emergency-room visits linked to phone use on the move doubled to as many as 1,500 between 2005 and 2010, an Ohio State University study recently showed. Authorities world-wide have taken note. Signs on Hong Kong’s subway system advise passengers in three languages to keep their eyes off their phones. Police and transport authorities have also warned the danger in Singapore, where the Straits Times newspaper ranked it as “No. 2 Bad Habit”, due to the rising number of road deaths. Some U.S. states, including New York and Arkansas, are even considering bans on this act. The Australian study used 26 volunteers, a third of whom admitted having hit objects while texting. They were fitted with different equipment in different parts of their body, and asked to walk 8.5 meters three times—once without a phone, once while reading a text and once while writing a text—while eight cameras captured the action. Volunteers using the phone walked slower and with shorter steps (and slowest of all when typing), and, more seriously, they locked their arms and elbows in like “robots”, in the researchers’ words. That forced their heads to move more, throwing them off balance. “In a pedestrian environment, inability to maintain a straight path would be likely to increase potential for hits, falls and traffic accidents,” said Mr. van den Hoorn. “The best thing to do is to step aside and stop, or keep off the phone.” 32. Which of the following about “Texting pedestrians” is WRONG? A. People who type while walking. B. People who phone while walking. C. People who text while walking. D. People who read text message while walking. 33. The writer uses the two examples in Paragraph 3 to show ________. A. the advantages of mobile phones B. the use of mobile phones in water C. the use of mobile phones in a wrong way D. the popularity of mobile phones 34. What is New York and Arkansas’ attitude to texting pedestrians? A. Considering forbidding their acts. B. Ranking it as “No. 1 Bad Habit”. C. Setting up signs to warn them. D. Equipping them with advanced machines. 35. What is the best title for the passage? A. Text message or email only? B. Ways to avoid falls C. Mobile phones for entertainment D.
