Each person involved shows an honest desire to pick up the bill, and in the end, all the people at the table give the winner praise and gratitude.‎ In fact, figuring out who will get the bill is always a headache for Chinese people at formal meals. Although the people hosting the meal are very likely to pay the check, it is a common practice to make an effort to pay the bill, but you will embarrass them if you do end up actually chipping in (凑) some cash.‎ In recent years, going Dutch has been accepted by many young people. But older generations who fear “losing face” still find it embarrassing and mean to calculate each person’s share of the bill. As the world’s largest travel guide brand Lonely Planet noted, it is considered“the height of unsophistication (不懂人情世故)”.‎ But these days, thanks to digital payment apps, splitting the bill electronically is becoming a widely-accepted idea. Even people from older generations would like to do so.‎ By scanning a QR code and paying their share via social networking tool WeChat and e-commerce app Alipay on their smart phones in one easy click, urban Chinese are finding it easier to save them the embarrassment of figuring out each person’s payment when they order a meal.‎ ‎“This function has made going Dutch less trouble and more fun in China”, CNN noted.‎ ‎“Because of their convenience, many of us are never without our phones. And person-to-person mobile payment services are incredibly easy to use and save the trouble of dealing with change,” said an 18-year-old student in China.‎ ‎26.Splitting the bill at formal meals was considered to be a(an) ______ task.‎ A. easy B. hard C. exciting D. funny ‎27.Many Chinese people make an effort to pay the bill because ______.‎ A. they don’t want to be considered unsophisticated B. they want praise and gratitude from their friends C. they consider it an honor to host the meal and pay the bill D. they find it hard to work out how much each person needs to pay ‎28.The underlined phrase “going Dutch” (in Paragraph 4) probably means _______.‎ A. figuring out the total payment B. taking turns to pay the bill C. fighting for the privilege of paying the bill D. each person paying their own expenses ‎29. According to the passage, which is NOT the advantage of using digital payment apps to split the bill?‎ A. They’re easier to use and more interesting.‎ B. They save the trouble of dealing with change.‎ C. They make it embarrassing to figure out how much money each person has to pay.‎ D. They make people less embarrassed to split the bill.‎ ‎30.What is the passage mainly about?‎ A. The Chinese tradition of dining out with friends.‎ B. A new trend of splitting the bill in China.‎ C. How social networking tools have influenced our daily lives.‎ D. Why people in China argue over who pays the bill when dining out.‎ C For as long as there have been gifts, we naturally make choices based on the recipient (接受者). But what if we have been wrong all along and that we could turn things around, which not only made gift buying easier, but the recipient happier?‎ In 2015, psychologists Lauren Human and Lara Aknin conducted an online survey, which suggested that when people buy gifts, they prefer to choose something based on the recipient’s personality and tastes. Most people also said that they preferred receiving gifts bought with them in mind: gifts for them.‎ But Human and Aknin wondered if this approach to giving failed to take advantage of the way we connect as people. So they sent 78 volunteers into a shopping centre before Mother’s Day. Half were told to buy a card that “reveals(揭示) your knowledge of the recipient” while the others set out to buy a card that “reveals your true self”. After the purchase, the givers who had thought partly of themselves reported feeling emotionally closer to their mothers.‎ To find out how the approach is received by recipients, the psychologists did another test, asking more than 100 students to choose a song on iTunes to give to a friend, partner or family member. Each half of the group received the same instructions as the card buyers. Results revealed that the recipients of songs which revealed something of the givers felt closer to them than those who received gifts bought only with them in mind.‎ Human and Aknin suggest it might apply to all gifts. “If building stronger social connections is the underlying (潜在的) goal” of a gift and surely it should be—then we “may well be advised to offer more self-reflective gifts”. In short, for a present to be meaningful, you need to give away a bit of yourself, even if there is a risk that the gift might not so closely suit the recipient’s practical needs or tastes as one gift gained purely with that in mind.‎ Moreover, giving something of oneself can be a safer act, the psychologists added. Because it reduces the risk of revealing poor knowledge of a recipient by attempting to buy something that fits their character—and failing.‎ But a note of caution here: what the research does not examine is the potential risk in repeated, unsympathetic giver-centered giving, which, according to Human and Aknin “could signal self-obsession” —and nobody wants to reveal that about themselves.‎ ‎31.From the Mother’s Day card test, we can conclude that ________.‎ A.gifts chosen with the giver in mind work well on the giver B.most people choose gifts with the recipient in mind C.most people choose gifts based on their personal tastes D.gifts chosen with the recipient in mind work well on the recipient ‎32.What do the underlined words “them, them” refer to in order of appearance?‎ A.The recipients; the givers. B.The givers; the recipients.‎ C.The givers; the givers. If any of this sounds familiar, you might be a perfectionist.‎ Perfectionism is like an obsession. 37 It can also negatively affect your health, creativity and working relationships.‎ There are two types of perfectionism: adaptive perfectionism and maladaptive ‎ perfectionism. Adaptive perfectionists are always trying to build their skills and improve the quality of their work. 38 They hit deadlines and they constantly improve the work they do.‎ Maladaptive perfectionists, on the other hand, are never really satisfied with their achievements. 39 Because of this and because they do so much rework, they can spend a very long time delivering any work at all, meaning they miss deadlines and disappoint the people who depend on them.‎ ‎ 40 If you approach your work this way, there are several things that you can do to challenge these behaviors, and create a healthier outlook.‎ Start by writing down everything you do that you think needs to be perfect. Next, think about each of these areas carefully. Once you’ve done this, come up with one specific way you can challenge each behavior. It takes time to overcome maladaptive perfectionism, but it is surely worth trying.‎ A. Do your work clothes have to be perfectly pressed?‎ B. However, they know when they’ve done a good job.‎ C.
