Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age give him without wasting his time in useless regrets. Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child things that have lost their interest for old people because they are too well-known, but a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something or being punished for what he has wrongly done. When a young man starts to earn his living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents , he may go prison. If , however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society. 21. The main topic of this passage is ______________. A. pains of children B. pleasures of children C. pains and pleasures of grown-ups D. pains and pleasures 22. According to Paragraph 2, the author thinks that _______________. A. life for a child is fairly easy B. a child is always loved whatever he does C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return D. only children are interested in life 23. A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains B. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard C. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life D. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life B Beijing is to close 34 illegal mines close to Yunju Temple and the Museum of Peking Man Ruins at Zhoukoudian this year. According to municipal statistics , there are more than 1,000 illegal mines in the eight suburban districts of Beijing, with a total workforce of 50,000. Eleven worker were killed in three accidents at illegally-run coal mines last year. Closure of the mines is beneficial to the protection of ancient cultural sites. Yunju Temple , a well-known Buddhist shrine in north China, built in 631 during the Tang Dynasty, houses a total of 14,278 stone tablets inscribed with religious writings by Chinese monks. The ruins at Zhoukoudian , some 50 Km southwest of Beijing, are an important dwelling site of prehistoric man. 24. Why is Beijing to close many mines and sand and stone plants? A. Beijing Takes Measures to Shut Down Illegal Mines. C Stephen Hawking, passing away Wednesday at the age of 76, had plenty to say about the future. Doomsday Let’s start with the big one, then: Hawking had in recent years been convinced that humanity needs to get into space with a fair amount of urgency, because “spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves.” In late 2016, Hawking reckoned humanity has about 1,000 years left on Earth. Half a year later, he cut that to 100 years, because of climate change, “overdue” asteroid strikes, excessive population growth, and the threat of epidemics. Oh, and nuclear or biological war. What changed over those months to so drastically shorten humanity’s Earthbound future? Well, Donald Trump got elected as U.S. president, for one thing. “We are close to the tipping point where global warming becomes irreversible. Trump’s action [pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement] could push the Earth over the brink, to become like Venus, with a temperature of two hundred and fifty degrees, and raining sulphuric acid,” Hawking said. Artificial intelligence Along with the likes of Elon Musk, Hawking was one of the most prominent voices warning of the dangers of so-called general artificial intelligence—AI that isn’t just designed for a narrow task, but that can improve itself to a point where a new super intelligence leaves humanity in the dust, and robots ultimately replace us. Hawking’s views on AI weren’t entirely gloomy, though. He also noted that the technology could help us get rid of disease and poverty, and so on. “Success in creating effective AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization. Or the worst. We just don’t know,” he said late last year. ______________ Alright, so we need to flee death-rain and killer robots. Where is Hawking’s “Planet B”? For the last decade, Hawking had been calling for colonies on the Moon and on Mars. But those are just staging posts—the physicist had his eye on the closest star system to ours, Alpha Centauri. A couple years ago, Hawking joined a team of scientists and investor Yuri Milner to design computer chips that could fly through space, aided by a super-thin sail. The Breakthrough Starshot program aims to send these “interstellar sailboats” out as probes, in order to return imagery from Alpha Centauri that might give us clues as to likely locations for colonization. Yes, Alpha Centauri is very, very far away, but the idea here is to propel these nanocraft using a 10 gigawatt light beam trained on their sails. Travelling at a fifth of the speed of light, the probes might be able to make the two-way trip within a few decades, the scientists hope. Hawking will never get to see that plan come to fruition. But who knows? Perhaps we will. 26. The proper title to fill in the blank is ________. A. Where to go? B. Whom to save? C. What to expect? D. How to develop? 27. According to Hawking, ________ is NOT the factor leading to human extinction? A. epidemics’ threat B. nuclear war C. excessive population growth D. Donald Trump 28. In terms of AI, Hawking probably agreed that ________ A. AI has raised great concerns throughout the world. B. AI can be made use of to prevent disease and climate change. C.we have yet to know whether it is beneficial to create effective AI. D. General AI is intended to improve itself to help complete a narrow task. 29. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. It’s time that we established colonies on Alpha Centauri. B. Hawking failed to finish the Breakthrough Starshot program. C. The Breakthrough Starshot program may be carried out successfully in the near future. D. We will make a two-way trip in the next decade based on the clues by Alpha Centauri. D Haw wondered why he had always thought that a change would lead to something worse. Now he realized that change could lead to something better. “Why didn’t I see this before?” he asked himself. Then he raced through the Maze with greater strength and agility. Before long, he found a Cheese Station and became excited as he noticed little pieces of New Cheese near the entrance. They were types of Cheeses he had never seen before, but they looked great. He tried them and found that they were delicious. He ate most of the New Cheese bits that were available and put a few in his pocket to have later and perhaps share with Hem. He began to regain his strength. He entered the Cheese Station with great excitement. But, to his disappointed, he found it was empty. Someone had already been there and had left only the few bits of New Cheese. He realized that if he had moved sooner, he would very likely have found a good deal of New Cheese here. Haw decided to go back and see if Hem was ready to join him. As he retraced his steps, he stopped and wrote on the wall: The quick you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese. After a while, Haw made his way back to Cheese Station C and found Hem. He offered Hem bits of New Cheese, but was turned down. Hem appreciated his friend’s gesture but said, “I don’t think I would like New Cheese. It’s not what I’m used to. I want my own Cheese back and I’m not going to change until I get what I want.” Haw just shook his head in disappointment and reluctantly went back out on his own. As he returned to the farthest point he had reached in the Maze, he missed his friend, but realized he liked what he was discovering. Even before he found what he hoped would be a great supply of New Cheese, if ever, he knew that what made him happy wasn’t just having Cheese. He was happy when he wasn’t being run by his fear. He liked what he was doing now. Knowing this, Haw didn’t feel as weak as he did when he stayed in Cheese Station C with no Cheese. Just realizing he was not letting his fear stop him, and knowing that he had taken a new direction, nourished him and gave him strength. Now he felt that it was just a question of time before he found what he needed. In fact, he sensed he had already found what he was looking for. He smiled as he realized: It Is Safer To Search In The Maze Than Remain In A Cheseless Station Haw realized again, as he had once before, that what you are afraid of is never as bad as what you imagine. The fear you let build up in your mind is worse than the situation that actually exists. He’d been so afraid of never finding New Cheese that he hadn’t even wanted to start looking. But since starting his journey, he had found enough Cheese in the corridors to keep him going. Now he looked forward to finding more. Just looking ahead was becoming exciting. His old thinking had been clouded by his worries and fears. But that had changed in the days since he had left Cheese Station C. Now he realized it was natural for change to continually occur, whether you expect it or not change could surprise you only if you didn’t expect it and weren’t looking for it. When he realized he had changed his beliefs, he paused to write on the wall: Old Beliefs Do Not Lead You To The New Cheese Haw hadn’t found any Cheese yet, but, as he ran through the Maze, he thought about what he had already learned. Haw now realized that his new beliefs were encouraging him to behave in a new way. He was behaving differently from the way he had when he had kept returning to the same cheeseless station. He now knew that when you change what you believe, you change what you do. You can believe that a change will harm you and resist it. Or you can believe that finding New Cheese will help you, and embrace the change. It all depends on what you choose to believe. He wrote on the wall: When You See That You Can Find New Cheese, You Change Course 30. From the first eight paragraphs, it can be concluded that ________ A. Haw was eager to eat up all Cheese bits. B. Haw cared much more about himself than Hem. C. Haw had been reluctant to change himself before. D. Haw has been dreaming of himself enjoying Cheese. 31. Hem refused to eat the Cheese bits, which implies that ________ A. Hem disliked the food offered by others. B. Hem wanted to help Haw save great trouble. C. Hem has had enough of Cheese bits, hoping for milk. D. Hem wouldn’t like to change his old attitude towards life. 32. The sentences Haw wrote on the wall are intended to show ________ A. Haw would inspire others to make changes with him. B. Haw had a strong desire to find New Cheese to share with Hem. C. Haw wanted Hem to find him by following the tracks on the wall. D. Haw has been changing his mind and action to reach his goal gradually. 33. Which of the following can express the main idea of the passage? A. Old habits die hard. B. A diversity leads to prosperity. C. Action speaks louder than words. D. Someone barks up the wrong the tree. 34. From the passage, which words can be used to describe Haw? A. Stubborn but selfless. B. Caring and ambitious. C. Outgoing and humorous. D. Persistent but indifferent. 35. What will be followed after the last paragraph based on the plot? A. Hem followed Haw’s advice to cooperate with him. B. Haw decided to start a company to produce Cheese. C. Hem tried to persuade Ham to leave the station D. D. Haw changed his original course hoping to find a new Cheese. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Does this situation seem familiar to you?Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, and you are speaking quite fluently. 36 First of all, remember that you are not alone.Listening is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. 37 What you need to do is to find listening resources. The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from RealMedia.com.The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station. A.What should you do? B.But listening is a problem for most of the beginners! C.However, after several weeks,I got used to the grammar rules. M: How much time do you spend on it? Some people I know do it one or two days a week. W: I don’t do it that much…usually, five hours a week. (9) M: Could I do volunteer work with you next week? W: Of course. Text 8 W: We join our cooks as they are making this week’s dish: Turkish baklava. Glen is adding chocolate to his. (10) Glen, tell us how long you’ve been interested in baking. (11) M: My grandmother taught me when I was five, but I didn’t really get interested in it until I was twenty. (11) W: And here you are, only thirty-five years old and on TV for your baking skills. M: I was happy to win the prize last week, but this week hasn’t gone so well. I’m not sure if I’ll get first prize this time. W: Baklava usually has honey and nuts in it. What made you think of adding chocolate? (12) M: I saw this at a bakery in France, (12) and I thought it would be good for my American customers. Text 9 tell: 知道,看出来 You can tell he’s angry when he starts shouting. 当他开始大喊大叫的时候,你能看出来他生气了。 W: It sure is crowded here. You can tell school is out! M: Oh, it’s not just like this during school holidays. We’re busy all year round. (13) W: Really? I thought only children wanted to visit Disneyland. (13) M: You’d be surprised. It’s an international tourist attraction. W: Yeah, I guess it’s always vacation time somewhere in the world. You must hate working here. Standing in that costume under the hot sun all day… (14) Aren’t you tired by the end of the day? M: I’m used to it, I guess. I do enjoy it more in the spring and fall. Winter is the worst. (14) W: Why do you keep doing it? (15) M: It’s fun. (15) I stay in shape and make people happy. W: Do the kids really believe you’re Mickey Mouse? M: The little ones do. Children have to believe in something. W: I see. But don’t you ever think about finding another job? M: Someday. I’ll finish college in two years, and then I’ll probably work at my dad’s bank. (16) W: Sounds like a good plan. Well, my kids are coming back from their ride. It was nice talking to you. ①well: 井,水井 The police found the lost money in a well. 警察在一口井里找到了丢失的钱财。 ②trunk: 象鼻 Text 10 This is a worrying moment: mother elephant tries to pull her baby from a well after staying there for 11 hours. (17) The mom refused to leave her baby, first using her trunk and then her feet to get her baby to safety. Unfortunately, the anxious mother elephant made matters worse by pushing more mud into the well, and it almost covered the baby, who was trapped from 9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. the following morning. The life of the little elephant was in great danger. But thankfully, people living nearby heard the sad cries of the mother elephant. They immediately rushed over to see what had happened. (18) The villagers found the mother, who refused to leave her baby. So, the villagers had to stand far away to watch everything. (18) Then the kind-hearted villagers tried their best to get the mother away for a while using bananas, in order to remove some of the soil stopping her from getting the baby out. At last, the mother tightly wrapped her trunk around the baby’s body and pulled him out. (19) Then the tired mother and her baby happily walked side by side as they continued their journey. (20)查看更多
