Test yourself. This will not only help you understand but also learn faster because it is more active than reading or listening. It will also help you to notice your mistakes and the topics you have trouble understanding. Take fuller notes Notes should be in your own words, brief and clear. They should be tidy and easy to read. Writing notes will help you better than just underlining as you read, since it forces you to rewrite ideas in your own words. Study the middle The best time to review is soon after you've learned something. You are more likely to remember the material at the beginning and the end of a lesson, so make sure you focus on the middle when you review. Sleep on it Study before going to bed, unless you are very tired. It's easier to remember material(s) you've just learned after sleeping than after an equal period of daytime activity, because your brain continues to think even after you've fallen asleep. Combine memory and understanding There are two ways to remember: by memorizing and by understanding. Multiplication tables, telephone numbers, and maths formulas are better learned by rote(死记硬背). Ideas are best learned by understanding. The more ways you have to think about an idea, the more meaning it will have; the more meaningful the learning, the better you can remember it. Pay attention to similarities in ideas and concepts, and then try to understand how they fit in with things you already know. Never be satisfied with anything less than a completely clear understanding of what you are reading. If you are not able to follow the thought, go back to the place where you first got puzzled and try again. 21. You can notice your mistakes by ________. A.saying things out aloud B.taking notes C.studying the middle D.sleeping on it 22. When taking notes, you should ________ to better help you with reading. A.underline important notes B.write notes in your own words C.take down every detail D.write as quickly as possible 23. Which of the following is NOT helpful for your understanding?________ A.Thinking about an idea in different ways. B.Relating ideas and concepts with what you already know. C.Reading from the beginning to the end without stop. D.Going back to what first made you puzzled and starting again. B Singing songs is fun, but is it also useful? For learning English pronunciation, Mr. Joe thinks songs are the most useful way to learn. At the same time, you can learn some new words and phrases while singing songs. Mr. Joe has used songs to help himself learn French, Spanish, Japanese and Chinese. You should do the same. Some vocabulary used in songs is not everyday English, so you have to be careful how you use song lyrics when you speak. Most words and sentences, though, are very useful. You don’t have to sing songs aloud if you are shy, but after learning a song you should be able to follow the words without looking at the lyrics. When you can do that, you have learned something valuable that you will never forget! Some good songs to listen to are from the Beatles, John Denver and the Carpenters. Their songs are not too fast and the lyrics are close to normal spoken English. Just for fun, you can try Mr. Joe’s favorite singer, B.B. King. His songs are not easy at all! If you can understand even 80% of “Why I Sing the Blues”, you are a very advanced student. If you become good at singing English songs, you can try to go to karaoke and sing with your friends. When you are able to sing a song in another language, even if you don’t sing so beautifully, you will really impress other people! 24. Singing English songs can help us, EXCEPT________. A. pronounce correctly B. remember new words C. impress other people D. overcome our shyness 25. The songs from the Beatles are easy to learn, one of the reasons may be________. A. everyone likes the songs B. John Denver’s voice is beautiful C. the lyrics of the songs can move us D. the lyrics are close to normal spoken English 26. The underlined word “advanced” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by________. A. careful B. excellent C. kind-hearted D. lazy 27. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?_______ A. English Songs. B. The Famous Band—The Beatles. C. English Songs help English Learning D. How to Learn English. They are reading, listening, speaking and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first master the skills of reading and listening. Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentences, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it. As for listening, there are two choices:besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skilful at your reading, and then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practise listening. For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programmes every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect. 32.According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills? A.Reading and listening. B.Reading and writing. C.Writing and speaking. D.Speaking and listening. 33.To improve your reading, when you read you should________.
