The degree of difficulty, however, differs from one person to another. Like studying any other subjects, we have to make an effort and put in the time. Besides, an individual’s learning ability can be determined by the following factors: My husband says I am a quick learner, but I easily forget new information, especially dates and figures. My husband spends more time learning a new subject but seldom forgets what he has learned. We’re exactly the opposite, and we represent the two basic kinds of learners. Some people can learn new information fast, while others have to work a little bit harder at it. Others remember new knowledge longer, like my husband, while others easily forget what they have just learned. How fast and well you learn new things are determined by your genes (基因) and your environment. My mother is a fast learner, while my husband has slow learning parents. The way we learn also differs. I like to write down what I’ve just learned. I also find that drawing diagrams (图表) works better for me. Compared with my husband, I hate memorizing data and definition (定义), for example, the definition of a family. I’d rather write down something like this: family = husband wife children. I remember things better when I can visually picture it in my mind, a mental picture or diagram. Determine your own learning ability by observing the way you learn new information, how fast you can learn it, and how long you can keep this new data. By doing so, you can choose the method best suited to your learning style. In my opinion, this is the most important factor in learning a foreign language: your drive to learn. As the saying goes, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Different people are driven by different motivations (动机). I want to learn a new language because I find it challenging. Others may need to learn a foreign language because of having a new job or working in foreign countries. The point is to determine whether you truly need or just want to learn a foreign language. There’s a difference between the two. The first is a requirement which needs to be done immediately, while the latter can be delayed and will not influence your performance in your job directly. 21. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. A person’s ability determines how he learns a foreign language. B. Effort and time play a key role in learning a foreign language. C. It’s not difficult for most people to learn a foreign language. D. Learning a foreign language isn’t the same for everyone. 22. Compared with the author, her husband _____. A. easily forgets new information B. likes memorizing data and figures C. has quick learning parents D. likes to draw diagrams 23. Which of the following affects people’s foreign language learning most? A. The degree of difficulty of the foreign language. B. The determination to overcome the difficulty. C. The motivation to learn a foreign language. D. The foreign language learning ability. 24. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To share her experience in learning a foreign language. B. To analyze why people cannot learn a foreign language well. C. To tell us how to find the method of learning a foreign language. D. To introduce some factors which affect our language learning ability. They are placing chickens at fixed points all along their border with the United States of America. They are using these chickens to see if the deadly West Nile virus exists in their country. The virus spreads to birds, so they think that the chickens have a good chance of catching the virus. The Canadians are worried because the West Nile virus is passed to humans by mosquitoes. It killed seven people in New York last year. Countries around the world are realizing something important—it may just be possible to stop certain kinds of people from entering their land; but it is very difficult to try and stop viruses that travel from one end of the earth to another. When they travel to new places, they adjust very easily to those climates and sometimes start destroying the local plant and animal life. These biological polluters are called smart polluters. These smart polluters can be carried across borders of countries unknowingly. Just as we humans are travelling across the globe more often than earlier, these biological polluters have also started journeying much more. They travel in many things carried from one country to another. There are some good examples of how these polluters work. The water hyacinth(水葫芦) of South America is filling lakes in China and Africa. Tree snakes from Papua New Guinea are busy eating up bird in the country of Guam, which is quite far away. Tiger mosquitoes from Asia are busy biting Americans. Suddenly, a lot of things become clearer. Like why the customs( 海 关 ) officials in many foreign countries prevent you from bringing in a small plant, they tell you that it’s in the rules. They have these rules because they know that these kinds of plants that are special to specific places have the power to spread new diseases among native plants and animals. They are called biological polluters and they always create problems in places where they do not belong . They could be special kinds of plants of animals. 28. According to the text, the West Nile virus______. A. has existed in Canada B. is dangerous to humans C. spreads from birds to humans D. is unable to survive in cold climates 29. What’s the characteristic of smart polluters? A. They are quite tiny B. They are as smart as humans. C. They travel with people around the world D. They get used to the new environment easily 30. The purpose of the examples in Paragraph 4 is to show that_____. A. a certain kind of mosquito can cause death B. biological polluters have traveled around the world C. it’s impossible to bring biological polluters to an end D. plants as well as animals can damage the environment 31. Why are plants not allowed to be taken to a foreign country? A. They can’t adjust to the new climates B. They can’t live together with the native plants C. They will destroy the balance of the local nature D. They may spread a certain virus to the native plants. D Like most fathers, Rick Conklin worries about his three children and fears failing them. The 47-year-old West Scranton, Pennsylvania resident juggles ( 兼 顾 ) the doctors appointments, dance recitals, track meets and concerts. He wants to find the right balance between giving the children structure and space. He worries about them dating and making the same mistakes he made in his youth. Unlike most fathers, Mr Conklin has to do it alone and joins the growing ranks of single dads who are celebrating Father’s Day today. According to the US Census, 6,292 single fathers lived in the seven-county region of Northeast Pennsylvania in 2000. By 2011, the number of men classified as “male household, no wife present” with children grew to 7,840 ---- 24.6 percent increase. That rate slightly outpaces the increase in single mothers, although there are still significantly more single moms than single dads. The most recent US Census data shows Northeast Pennsylvania has 22,948 single mothers, a 22.8 percent increase from 17,705 in 2000. Mr Conklin spoke of the struggles and rewards of being a single parent to 15-year-old Breonna, 13-year-old Mercadeze and 11-year-old Rickey Jr. “It’s what makes it 10 times harder doing this, that I’m the only adult in the house,” Mr. Conklin said. “There isn’t that partner to take half of that frustration load or half of the arguments that the kids go through and the wars that go on.... There’s just me.” Mr Conklin knows he is not perfect and strives to improve. He said he tries to research ways to be a good single parent through books and the Internet, and has taken family-strengthening classes with his children. Although Mr Conklin sometimes finds being a father a thankless job, Breonna said she thinks he’s “doing a really good job on his own”. He may be a little “strict”, Breonna said, but he is also “energetic”. She said her father cooks and cleans every day and is always trying to get his daughters involved with activities, through which Breonna said she has learned quite a bit about herself. 32. We can learn from the passage that Mr Conklin ______. A. has clear plans for each of his children B. puts in a lot of effort to become a good parent C. has great expectations for his children D. receives little gratitude and understanding from his children 33. In Northeast Pennsylvania, people are likely to find that ______. A. single fathers have outnumbered single mothers B. the increase rate of single parent has recently dropped C. most single fathers are struggling to meet basic needs of life D. various sources are available for single fathers to improve family relations 34. The underlined word “this” in paragraph 7 refers to ______. A. teaching the kids to get along well B. finding someone to listen to your worries C. taking care of three children altogether D. hiring someone to do the housework 35. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. How to become a qualified single parent B. Dads in Pennsylvania celebrating Father’s Day C. Struggles and rewards of being a single parent D.
