Among 10 provinces in the country, there is only one of these---Quebec is known as "French Canada". This is because it was founded by French explorers while British adventurers discovered the rest.‎ ‎ Canada left the British empire (帝国) in 1867 to become an independent ‎ country, and English and French have been recognized as the official languages ever since. Most people speak English as their first language and the two national television networks broadcast in English throughout the country. Apart from in Quebec and a few places on the east coast, French television is very rare.‎ ‎ The same goes for traffic signs and menus. For example, outside of Quebec, there are only a few places where you'll see traffic signs in French. In restaurants, it's almost impossible to find French on the menu unless you are in the heartland (中心地带) of French Canada. However, all products sold in Canada must, by law, have labels (标签) and instructions in both languages.‎ ‎ In Canada's English speaking provinces, official bilingualism (双语) means that students can choose to complete a special French language course. Under this programme, they are taught most of their subjects in French. If a student begins the course in kindergarten (幼儿园) or Grade One, it is likely that all their lessons will be in French. However, if they start at junior high school, 25 per cent of the teaching will continue to be in English.‎ ‎24. How many provinces are there in Canada?‎ A. Two. B. Nine. C. Ten. D. Eleven.‎ ‎25. Quebec was discovered by British adventurers. C. Outside of Quebec, French is not widely used on menus or traffic signs. D. Students in Canada must complete their courses both in French and English.‎ C The weather is getting hotter. You are thirsty after playing basketball or riding home from School. A cold drink may be just the thing. But be careful of what you are drinking. Something that looks cool may not be good for our health. There are plenty of "energy drinks" on the market. Most of them have beautiful colors and cool names. The lists on them tell you they are helpful to your health. Sounds great! ‎ ‎ But after a careful check you may find that most energy drinks have lots of caffeine (咖啡因) in them. These drinks are especially aimed at young people, students, busy people and sports players. Makers sometimes say their drinks make you better at sports and can keep you awake. But be careful not to drink too much.‎ Caffeine makes your heart beat fast. Because of this, the International Olympic Committee has limited( 限制) its use. Caffeine in most energy drinks is at least as ‎ strong as that in a cup of coffee or tea. Possible health dangers have something to do with energy drinks. Just one box of energy drink can make you nervous, have difficulty sleeping and can even cause heart problems. Scientists say that teenagers should be discouraged from taking drinks with a lot of caffeine in them.‎ ‎28. But did you know that the former slave also served as a spy for the Union during the Civil War and was the first woman in American history to lead a military expedition(远征)? Tubman decided to help the Union Army because she wanted freedom for all of the people who were forced into slavery, not just the few she could help by herself. And she convinced many other brave African Americans to join her as spies, even at the risk of being hanged if they were caught. In one of her most dramatic and dangerous roles, Tubman helped Colonel James Montgomery plan a surprise attack to free slaves from plantations along the Combahee River in South Carolina. Early on the morning of June 1,1863, three gunboats carrying several hundred male soldiers along with Harriet Tubman set out on their mission. Tubman had gathered key information from her scouts(侦察兵) about the Confederate positions. She knew where they were hiding along the shore. She also found out where they had placed torpedoes(鱼雷), or barrels filled with gunpowder, in the water. As the early morning fog lifted on some of the South’s most important rice plantations, the Union expedition hit hard. The soldiers set fire to buildings and destroyed bridges, so they couldn’t be used by the Confederate Army. They also freed about 750 slaves—men, women, children, and babies—and did not ‎ lose one soldier in the attack.‎ Allen, who writes about this adventure and many others, got to know Tubman well through the months of research he did for the book. “She was 157 centimeters tall, born a slave, had an illness and was unable to read or write. Yet here was this tough woman who could take charge and lead men. Put all that together and you get Harriet Tubman. I got to like her pretty quickly because of her strength and spirit, ” Allen says.‎ ‎32. Why did Tubman decide to help the Union Army?‎ A. To escape from the plantation. B. To fight for the South.‎ C. To free all slaves. D. To form a bigger union.‎ ‎33. What do we know about the expedition on June 1, 1863?‎ A. Both the Union and the Confederate suffered a heavy loss.‎ B. Tubman persuaded many slaves to join the attack.‎ C. Tubman was the only woman in action.‎ D. The attack took place deep in the night.‎ ‎34. Which of the following words can best describe Tubman?‎ A. Brave and ambitious. B. Easy-going and reliable.‎ C. Hard-working and patient. D. Honest and responsible.‎ ‎35. In the last paragraph, why does the author tell about Tubman’s size and illness?‎ A. To make the readers feel sorry for her.‎ B.
