Finally he said, “And Mr. Lincoln was a very good waiter too.” People burst into laughter, but they quieted down when Mr. Lincoln said quietly. “Gentlemen, what Mr. Douglas has said is true. I did keep a grocery (食品杂货店), and I did sell cotton, candles and cigars(雪茄烟), and sometimes whisky(威士忌酒). But I remember that in those days Mr. Douglas was one of my best customers. I often stood on one side of the counter and sold whisky to Mr. Douglas on the other side, but the difference between us now is: I have left my side of the counter, but Mr. Douglas still sticks to his as firmly as ever.” 21. Douglas kept on going to gatherings and talking a lot. B Can trees talk? Yes, but not in words. Scientists have reason to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars (毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that they got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. Then even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special smell---a signal causing its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty. Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar (花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending message? 25. It can be concluded from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that ______. A. are lying on the ground B. have an unpleasant taste C. bees don’t like D. have an unfamiliar shape 26. The willow tree described in the passage protected itself by ______. A. growing more branches B. communicating with birds and bees C. changing its leaf chemistry D. shaking caterpillars off 27. According to the passage, the willow tree was able to communicate with other trees by ______. A. waving its branches B. giving off a special smell C. dropping its leaves D. changing the colour of its trunk 28. According to this passage, bees communicate by ______. A. making special movement B. touching one another C. smelling one another D. making unusual sound C To learn English well you must learn about yourself. You must discover what your own special needs are in English. You should pick out what makes English different from your own language and concentrate on those parts. And above all, you should pick out your own personal weaknesses in English, pick out your own special problems, find out what mistakes you most often make and make a list of them. It will be best if, in your preparation, you can practise doing the various sorts of work you will be asked to do in examination. You should then make a careful note of any mistakes you make more than once. Count up how many times you make each mistake, and the mistake you make most often should be at the top of your list, the next most common in second place, and so on. For example, if your own language is Japanese, you may find the problem of articles comes at the top of your list. If you speak German, you may find using some of the conjunctions is your biggest problem. If your mother tongue is French, you find you are always having trouble with some of prepositions. And if Italian is your language, you may constantly forget to use a suitable pronoun when you should. But these are only examples of mistakes typical of certain languages. They may or may not be your particular personal mistakes. As I say, these personal ones are the most important of all to discover. 29. To learn English well the most important thing is to _____. A. learn about yourself as much as possible B. discover your own special needs in the language C. find out the difference between your own language and English D. pick out your own personal weaknesses in English 30. The writer advises the readers to _____. A. spend as much time on English as possible B. take examinations of various sorts C. find out their own problems in doing selected exercises D. keep a notebook with the important languages points in it 31. The first item on the list should be the mistake you make _____. A. more than once B. many times C. most often D. very often D American cities are similar to other cities around the world. In every country cities reflect the values of the culture. Cities contain the very best aspects of a society opportunities for education、employment and entertainment. They also contain the very worst parts of a society: violent、 crime 、racial、 conflict and poverty. American cities are changing just as American society is changing. After World War II city residents became wealthier more prosperous. They had more children. They needed more space. They move out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs areas near a city where people live. These are areas without many offices or factories. During the 1950s the American “dream” was to have a house in the suburbs. Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in 1950s are now adults. They unlike their parents want to live in the cities. Many young professionals 、doctors 、lawyers and executives are moving back into the city. Many are single; others are married but often without children. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; they are afraid of the fuel shortage; or they just enjoy the excitement and opportunities which the city offers. This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits. Countless poor people must leave their apartments in the city because the owners want to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of for rent. In the 1950s, many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of these people do not have enough money to stay in the cities. Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright new future .Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: many dying cities are alive again. 32.What does the author think of cities all over the world ? A. They are alive . B. They are hopeless. C. They are similar D. They are different. 33.Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World War Ⅱ? A. Because older American cities were dying. B. Because they were richer and needed more space. C. Because cities contained the worst parts of society. D. Because they could hardly afford to live in the city. 34. According to the 4th paragragh, a great many poor people in American cities A. are faced with housing problems B. are faced to move to the suburbs C. want to sell their buildings D. need more money for daily expenses 35. We can conclude from the text that ( ) A. American cities are changing for the wars B. people have different views on American cities C. many people are now moving from American cities D. the population is decreasing in older American cities 第二节,七选五 Building Trust in a Relationship Again Trust is a learned behavior that we gain from past experiences. 36 Trust is a risk. But you can’t be successful when there’s a lack of trust in a relationship that results from an action where the wrongdoer takes no responsibility to fix the mistake. Unfortunately,we’ve all been victims of betrayal. Whether we’ve been stolen from, lied to,misled,or cheated on,there are different levels of losing trust. Sometimes people simply can’t trust anymore. 37 It’s understandable, but if you’re willing to build trust in a relationship again,we have some steps you can take to get you there. 38 Having confidence in yourself will help you make better choices because you can see what the best outcome would be for your well-being. 39 If you’ve been betrayed, you are the victim of your circumstance. But there’s a difference between being a victim and living with a “victim mentality”.At some point in all of our lives,we’ll have our trust tested or violated. You didn’t lose “everything”.Once trust is lost, what is left? Instead of looking at the situation from this hopeless angle, look at everything you still have and be thankful for all of the good in your life. 40 Instead,it’s a healthy way to work through the experience to allow room for positive growth and forgiveness. A.Learn to really trust yourself. B.It is putting confidence in someone. C.Stop regarding yourself as the victim. D.Remember that you can expect the best in return. E.They’ve been too badly hurt and they can’t bear to let it happen again. F.This knowledge carries over in their attitude toward their future relationships. G.Seeing the positive side of things doesn’t mean you’re ignoring what happened. 第三部分 第一节:完形填空(每空1.5分,满分30分) My first job was in what they call the city center.The___41___was large, dark and old__42__the physics lecture room was on the second floor. 43___, it wasn’t a lecture room at all, it was an ordinary room, but it had “LECTURE ROOM” on the____44____.The students were sixteen or seventeen years old,___45___several years younger than me.____46____, some of them looked and acted___47___older than me sometimes.
