Researchers say that getting older should not necessarily mean becoming more weak or sick. Their research shows that a devotion to a life of movement and exercise may help us live not only longer, but also healthier.‎ For their study, the researchers looked at two groups. The first group was made up of 125 non-professional cyclists between the ages of 55 to 79. This group included 84 healthy men and 41 healthy women. We will call this group the “cyclists”.‎ Researchers then found 130 people to make up a second group. Within this group, 75 people were aged from 57 to 80. The other 55 were between the ages of 20 and 36. The people in this group were also healthy, but they did not exercise regularly. We will call this group the “non-exercisers”. Smokers, heavy drinkers of alcohol and people with other health issues were not included in the study.‎ Then, researchers gave both groups a series of tests. They tested their muscle mass (肌肉质量), muscular strength, percentage of body fat and the strength of their immune (免疫的) systems. Then the researchers compared the results of the two groups.‎ Results showed that the cyclists did not experience body changes usually regarded as a normal aging process. For example, they did not lose muscle mass or muscular strength. Also, their body fat did not increase with age.‎ The researchers also found something they had not expected. The study showed that the immune systems of the cyclists did not age either.‎ The researchers advise us all to find an exercise that we like in our lives.‎ ‎8.How did the researchers carry out the study?‎ A.By comparing. B.By discussing.‎ C.By imagining. D.By reasoning.‎ ‎9.Which of the following is a result of the research?‎ A.The cyclists kept a thin body shape.‎ B.The non-exercisers gained weight easily.‎ C.The cyclists’ muscles remained strong with age.‎ D.The non-exercisers usually had health problems.‎ ‎10.Which is an unexpected result for the researchers?‎ A.The cyclists had normal aging process.‎ B.The cyclists’ immune systems didn’t age.‎ C.The cyclists lost nearly all their fat.‎ D.Everyone needed an exercise in their lives.‎ ‎11.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?‎ A.Healthy People Need More Exercise B.Take an Exercise, the Harder, the Better C.Cycling Is the Best Way to Prevent Aging D.A Lifetime of Exercise Slows Aging Process D My 16-year-old son, Anton, had gone to the local swimming hole. Most kids swam there, and there were plenty of rocks for them to use as safe harbors, so I had no fears for his safety.‎ Still, the firefighter’s first words “You need to come up here to the Stillwater River” made me catch my breath and his follow-up words gave me relief: “Your son is OK.”‎ When I got to the river, I immediately saw the firetruck, ambulance and Anton, wrapped with a towel about his shoulders, sitting quietly on a low platform of the fire engine.‎ I hurried over to him. “You OK?” I asked.‎ ‎“Yeah,” was all that he said. But my eyes begged for an explanation. I didn’t get it from my son, however, who tends to play his cards close to his vest.‎ The story was this: A woman was being swept under water. Hearing the cries, Anton and his friend Tyler, without hesitation, swam out to her, and brought her safely to shore.‎ In an age in which the word “hero” is broadcast with abandon and seemingly applied to anyone who make it through the day, I realized the real thing in my son.‎ ‎ The teens are stubborn and self-centered, but that didn’t mean they have no desire to do good.‎ Still shocked by my son’s daring, I drove him home. Along the way, I tried to dig out some more information from him-but he had precious little to say. The only words he said were, “What’s for supper?”‎ I spent some time alone that evening, thinking about the tragedy that might have been. The next morning, when Anton got up, I half expected him to tell me the story. But all he did was toast some bread, pull himself together, and head for the door to start a new day.Watching from the window, I was reminded that still water often runs deep.‎ ‎12. Why did the mother allow her son to swim there?‎ A. Because he was an excellent swimmer.‎ B. Because the water of the river was shallow.‎ C. Because he was old enough to swim.‎ D. Because the rocks could be of help if there is danger.‎ ‎13. The underlined part “who tends to play his cards close to his vest” probably means ______.‎ A. Anton is a boy fond of swimming with other kids B. Anton is unwilling to tell others what he thinks C. Anton always has a desire to help others D. Anton seldom changes his mind ‎14. In the mother’s eyes, what her son did was _____________.‎ A. dangerous but interesting B. unexpected and courageous C. meaningful but difficult D. awful and absurd ‎15. What might be the best title for the passage?‎ A. My son, my hero B. Anton, a silent boy C. A good deed D. A proud mother ‎ 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ Reading is really a good way to improve ourselves. __16___ If you don’t believe me, please consider these reasons to read more books.‎ ‎● You will optimize your brain power.‎ ‎__17___ Unlike watching television, which requires no thought process, reading is an active learning experience that will keep your mind sharp(even in old age).‎ ‎●___18___‎ If you’re looking for entertainment on a budget, you can’t beat books.
