At about 11:00 P.M., another ship, the Stockholm, suddenly hit the Andrea Doria. It made a huge hole in the Italian ship. Some people were badly hurt. Others fell into the sea. But one girl was saved by the Stockholm. Linda Morgan was fourteen. She lived in Spain with her mother and her little sister. She was going to visit her father in New York. She was excited about seeing her father. Linda had loved the trip. She wanted to have dinner with the captain on the last night at sea. The captain did not sit at his table that night, though. He was busy guiding the ship through the fog. Linda did not get to talk to him. When Linda went to bed, everything seemed fine. Her mother turned off the lights. Linda talked to her little sister. She thought about seeing her father the next morning. What happened next was a terrible surprise. Linda woke up not knowing where she was. She was not in her bed. When she called to her family, no one answered. Both her knees were broken. Linda had been saved by an amazing accident. When the Stockholm made a hole in the side of the Andrea Doria, it lifted Linda out of her bed. She landed on the deck (甲板) of the Stockholm instead of falling into the ocean. A sailor heard her cries and found her. Right now, the girl is in the hospital. She is expected to get better. Her father is at her side, glad that his little girl was saved. The Andrea Doria lies under the waves at the bottom of the sea. 5. Why didn’t Captain Piero Calamai reduce the speed? A. He didn’t want to be late. B. He went crazy because of the bad weather. C. Most of the time, he was distant. At meals, he would preach (说教) something to us, his unwilling audience. And he thought he was always right. Usually I would argue with him fiercely, yet still he managed to defeat me every time, leaving me frustrated and angry. Sometimes I just hated him and seldom talked with him. After moving away from home at age 18, I realized that I could change myself by letting go of my need to be right. I wrote dad a letter asking if he was interested in becoming friends. Dad was excited at the idea. Yet after a brief, enjoyable period of about two months, I found those same old patterns again. However, I still held to my decision. Gradually, I learned to hold my tongue. When discussion turned to debate, I would do my very best not to prove him wrong. By the end of six months, I had done it! I could sit through a conversation where dad was telling me how I was wrong and didn’t argue with him. As I got better at this, I could accept and even love my dad. One day when he was again preaching some rules, I simply nodded my head occasionally. Then I heard, “Well, Fred, what do you think?” From that point on, dad and I began having meaningful conversations. I was amazed that once I made the big changes, dad changed, too! From that point on, our relationship gradually grew warmer and deeper. 9. Why did the author use to be angry with his father? A. His father talked too much about something unimportant. B. The decision to argue again with my father. D. The decision to stop talking with my father. 12. We can infer from the text that . A. accepting and loving others can help improve people’s relationship B. insisting on one’s own ideas is important to people of all ages C. giving up something is a wise decision all the time D. respecting parents is unnecessary for young people D Movie makers at one time worried that they might be put out of business by television. Recently, however, more and more people have been going to the movies. This may be partly because the economic situation in America has worsened. When at the movies, people forget their troubles, as they get involved in the story on the screen. Also, directors have recently been producing pictures that large numbers of people want to see. Americans in the millions are returning to their love affair with the movies. Motion picture industry experts see two main factors responsible for this: an increased need by Americans to escape from economic worries and a large number of new movies with broad audience appeal. Movie makers admit that their rising popularity is partly the result of poor economic conditions, which traditionally bring an increase in theater attendance. “When people are fearful about the future, they look for escape,” comments Jack Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America. “In a shaded theater, with a 65-foot screen, you lose yourself for two and a half hours and people find this beneficial.” 13 What did movie makers worry about before? A. That no one would go to the cinema. B. That movies couldn’t be a business any more. C. That their movies might be played on television. D. That people preferred watching TV to seeing films. 14. Why are so many people going to see movies now? A. Because people now have much more money. B. Because people have troubles. C. Because people wanted to escape from real life. D. Because watching movies is now much cheaper than watching TV. 15. What’s the passage mainly about? A. That more American people are watching movies than before. B. That television will take the place of movies. C. America’s economic depression. D. That Americans prefer to watch movies rather than watch TV. 二. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 The cure for sleeping problems can often be found in your daily routine.
