In the end, we compromise(妥协) on McDonald’s, where Alisha will get active. It’s a three-hour drive to Yosemite, but we’re taking a little longer, as we are busy visiting Highway 80’s public restrooms. As the saying goes, “Not one bladder(膀胱)empties but another fills.” Many of these restrooms belong to gas stations. I prefer them to the high-tech ones on planes. We get back on the road. Ed is driving now. When all the tabloids(小报)have been read, the travel has grown tedious and anyone under age 12 always keeps asking“Are we there yet?” . Just outside Manteca, California, we stop for coffee. At a Starbucks checkout, Ed buys a CD of Joni Mitchell’s favorite musical picks. The hope is that it will have a calming effect. As we pull back onto the highway, it starts to pour(下雨). Then something amazing happens. As we climb the mountain, the rain turns to snow. The pines(松树) are spotted with white. We’re struck dumb(说不出话)by the scene outside. For a solid 15 minutes, everyone forgets about their bladder, their blood sugar and the temperature. Alisha has never seen snow, so we pull over to make snowmen and catch snowflakes(雪花) on our tongues. Then Ed realizes we need tire chains, and we have to turn back and drive 30miles to Oakhurst. “Good,” says Doris. “There was a very nice restroom there.” 24. Where does the family have lunch? A. The public transportation system offers more than just a trip, however. It also has one of the most extensive public art collections in the world, with many of them under city streets. Some people call it New York’s “underground art museum”. It includes more than 250 works of art. They are meant to brighten everyone’s ride around the city. There is a huge painting of the night sky on the ceiling(天花板) of Grand Central Terminal. New Yorkers have been looking up at that artwork for 111 years. In the nearby Grand Central Market, you can find a large crystal light painting, which was completed by sculptor Donald Lipski in 1988. Other artists include new ones and the long-famous ones such as Roy Lichtenstein and Sol Lewitt. Sandra Bloodworth has directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s arts program since it began in 1985.But actually, it really began much earlier, and some of it even dates back to the time when the subway first opened in 1904. For the past 30 years, artists have been asked to make works that relate to city life or to the neighborhood around a train station. There are coastal scenes at stations near the Atlantic Ocean. Native plants and flowers can be found in a garden scene in Brooklyn. Alejandra Acosta, a visitor from Colombia, said, “I think it’s nice to see these kinds of things when you’re walking in spaces like the subway stations that seem a little bit dull. They don’t have a lot of decorations.” Those art works in New York’s “underground art museum” bring life into the dark passages. 28. The art works are decorated in subway stations to . People who keep a regular sleep routine have a lower body fat than those who keep irregular(无规律的) sleep hours, says a new study. Led by Bruce Bailey, professor of exercise science, researchers followed 300 female(女性) college students aged 19 to 26, who were given activity trackers(跟踪器) to watch their movements and activities, including waking and sleeping times . Researchers also measured their body composition (成分)before and after the one-week study period. What the researchers found: Body fat varied with(随、、、而变) sleep quantity(数量). Women who slept between 8 and 8.5 hours a night had the lowest body fat. While those who slept less than 7 hours or over 9 hours had higher body fat. High quality(质量) sleep was associated with(与、、、有关) lower body fat while poor sleep was connected with higher body fat. Waking and going to sleep at the same time every day was most strongly linked with lower body fat. The difference in body weight was greater with more variation(变化) in sleep pattern. Women whose sleep patterns varied by 90 minutes a night had higher body fat than those whose sleep patterns varied by 60 minutes or less on average. The study followed up on a body of research conducted over the last few years that connects quality and quantity of sleep with weight loss and better weight control. While researchers don’t know exactly how sleep schedules affect(影响) body weight and fat, other studies have shown that sleep has an effect(影响)on physical activity, appetite(胃口), and the hormones(荷尔蒙)that control metabolism(新陈代谢), and the signals that tell us we’re full. 32. Which of the following about the study led by Bruce Bailey is true? A. The participants(参与者) included both females and males. B. The participants’ body composition were measured only after the study. Nevertheless, should middle school students be allowed to ride them to school? In terms of this topic, opinions vary from person to person. Some people think that middle students are old enough to ride electric bicycles. Besides, there is no law that bans middle school students from riding them. Last but not least, it is really convenient for students to ride them to school, considering that there is much homework and little time left to students. Others are against the opinion. For one thing, students often ride electric bikes so fast as to cause quite a few traffic accidents. For another, they can choose other traffic tools such as ordinary bikes or buses etc. In my opinion, each coin has two sides. If possible, we can ride ordinary bikes or take a bus for the sake of safety. If necessary, we can ride electric bicycles but much attention should pay to safety.查看更多
