Then, some people learned to grow crops and raise animals for food. They were the first farmers. From the sixteenth century on, the word “farm” has meant agricultural land. But a much older meaning of the word “farm” is linked to economics. The word “farm” comes from the Latin word “firma”, which means an unchanging payment. Experts say the earliest meaning of the English word “farm” was a yearly payment made as a tax or rent. Farmers in early England did not own their land. They paid every year to use agricultural lands. In England, farmers used hawthorn trees along the edges of houses. They called this row of hawthorns a hedge. Hedging fields was how careful farmers marked and protected them. Soon, people began to use the word “hedging” to describe steps that could be taken to protect against financial loss. Hedging is common among gamblers who make large bets. A gambler bets a lot of money on one team. But, to be on the safe side, he also places a smaller bet on the other team, to reduce a possible loss. You might say that someone is hedging his bet when he invests in several different kinds of business. One business may fail, but likely not all. Farmers know that it is necessary to make hay while the sun shines. Hay has to be cut and gathered when it is dry. So a wise farmer never postpones gathering his hay when the sun is shining. Rain may soon appear. A wise person copies the farmer. He works when conditions are right. 21.We can know from the 3rd paragraph that farmers in early England _________. A.had land of their own B.paid to use hawthorn trees every year C.used hedging fields D.often suffered from financial loss 22.Which of the following is wise? A.A mother tries to sleep as soon as her baby is quiet B.Hay has to be cut and gathered before it is dry C.Put off gathering hay when the sun is shining D.Gather hay as it is rainy 23.If a boy is carefully listening to his teacher in class, he learns to _________. A.become a wise farmer B.hedge his bet C.gather his hay D.make hay while the sun shines B Around this time a few years ago, it was common to see videos of friends on social media having a bucket of icy water thrown on them. Known as the “ice bucket challenge”, it was created as a way to raise money for the medical condition ALS. But now, there’s a new challenge and this time, no water is involved. What is it? Well, think of a fruit that you’d never normally sink your teeth into. Perhaps you’ve got it: a lemon. While we enjoy using lemons to add flavor to dishes, very few of us would actually eat one as we’d eat an apple or an orange. But the horrible taste is the precise reason why the “lemon face challenge” is taking off. Participants bite into a lemon, taking a selfie as they do it before posting the photo online. The fun is all about expression people make as all that citric acid (柠檬酸) hits their taste buds (味蕾). Every expression seems to say, “This is worse than freezing water.” The serious side to this trend is the good cause it’s all in aid of. The challenge aims to raise awareness of a rare brain cancer that affects young children. It was started by Aubregh Nicholas, an 11-year-old US kid. She was diagnosed with this rare brain cancer herself in September 2017, but has since raised almost $50000 to cover her medical expenses thanks to the challenge. If a challenge is going to raise publicity and contributions from people, it has to be something interesting and original. That way the ice bucket challenge took off in 2014 and it explains why so many people are now sharing their lemon faces. There are a lot of stories about the downside of social media these days. The charity challenges, however, show how online culture can unite the world and bring help to the people who most need it. 24.Why is the icy bucket challenge mentioned in the article? A.To show how charity gained its popularity online. B.To introduce a similar challenge that raises money for charity. C.To attract people’s attention to a rare disease. D.To prove its popularity around the world. 25.Compared with the pre-Internet charity, what is the advantage of online charity? A.It raises more money than ever before. B.It is started by the people who suffer rare diseases. C.It brings people together easily and quickly. D.It causes little doubt among people. 26.What does the underlined phrase “take off’ in the last paragraph mean? A.Go away suddenly. B.Become successful and popular. C.Remove your clothes. D.Take a break. 27.What is the author’s attitude towards online charity? A.Positive. B.Indifferent. C.Negative. D.Ambiguous. C I suffered from mental illness and depression when I was younger, and it totally affected my teenage years. But after a long struggle, I found a hobby that changed my life. My depression really kicked in after my parents moved to the UK when I was about 11 years old. Having to get used to life in a foreign country was very difficult. The friends I knew were gone, and the changes in my environment led to my depression. I had problems in many parts of my life, which made it feel impossible for me to carry on. At that time, I didn’t understand that depression was an illness. I remember a particular day when I couldn’t find enough strength to get myself home from playing in the park—it felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders. Other times, I even thought about killing myself —I just felt so trapped. I never really reached out for help either, as I felt that there wasn’t anyone who could have helped with my situation. What turned my life around, however, was discovering street dancing. I was introduced to it by a friend, and I started taking classes at a studio in London. After a few weeks, I began to go out and meet a lot of other dancers to practice and train with them on a regular basis. It gave me a purpose, and eventually the happiness I gained from it helped me manage my depression. The dancing helped me get my life back, focus on my studies, and get through university. My advice to anyone who might be going through something like I was is to reach out for help. The thing about life is that it changes, and you never know what might come your way. If someone had said to me during those dark moments that I would have gone on to achieve the things I have, I wouldn’t have ever believed it. Just take each day as it comes, and remember that there’s always someone, or something, out there to help you. 28.How did the author deal with his depression at first? A.He turned to his old friends for help. B.He talked about it with his parents. C.He put up with it by himself. D.He read many articles about it. 29.How did street dancing benefit the author? A.It helped him find a good job. B.It taught him how to control his emotions perfectly. C.It let him find many true friends. D.It cheered him up and made him feel positive. 30.What does the author suggest people do when they feel down? A.Always be confident in themselves. B.Find someone or something to rescue them. C.Wait for help to come patiently. D.Accept everything that life sends their way, 31.How might the author feel about his future? A.Hopeful. B.Fearful. C.Satisfied. D.Uncertain. In my opinion, you should apologize to your mother, as she has done nothing wrong to prevent you from Internet addiction. Although the Internet plays an important role in modern life, we can’t ignore its harm to us. Many students spend most of their time playing computer games or chatting aimlessly with others, which may not only result in poor health and decline in study but also loss of communication in the real world. As students, we should devote our energy to study. When available, you may as well walk outside with your friends or take some exercise to keep fit instead of playing online games. Only in this way can you live and study happily and healthily. Yours, LiHua查看更多
