The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.‎ Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, "It's a little damp(潮湿的)outside.”Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, "She isn't exactly friendly." Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humour.‎ Another key to understanding British humour is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life when someone accidentally falls over in the street. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedy series Mr. Bean is a good example of this kind of humour. Mr. Bean is the ‎ character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. ‎ Mr. Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movements and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr. Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr. Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humour. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humour.‎ ‎21. Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes?‎ A. The British often enlarge the fact.‎ B. British jokes are connected with many different cultures.‎ C. British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.‎ D. The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.‎ ‎22. Mr. Bean makes people laugh by__________.‎ ‎ A. telling funny stories B. using his body movements and facial expressions C. copying how others behave D. making jokes about others' accents ‎23. What can be the best title for the text?‎ ‎ A. British Humour in Comedy B. Humour in Different Cultures ‎ C.Understanding British Humour D. Developing Your Sense of Humour B Domestic animals have often been known to save their human companions from danger. From the quick thinking of Duke, the dog who warned his guardians of their baby’s need for medical attention, to the smart actions of service dog Yolanda, who rescued her highly near-sighted human from a house fire by dialing 911, there are many animals out there who have earned the lasting gratitude of their human friends. However, it is truly surprising to hear about undomesticated (未驯服的) animals who, without any obvious reason, stepped in and saved humans from the coming death.‎ In June 2005, a twelve-year-old girl was caught by four men in rural south-west Ethiopia as she made her way home from school. A week after the kidnapping, her captors were trying to move her, when three lions chased the men off. The lions remained with the terrified girl until police officers arrived to send her to safety. She told them that although she had been beaten by her kidnappers, who it is believed had been attempting to sell her into a forced marriage, the lions had not touched her.‎ Sergeant Wondmu Wedaj said, “They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest. Everyone thinks this is some kind ‎ of miracle, because normally the lions would attack people.” An Ethiopian wildlife expert claimed that the lions may have spared the girl because her cries had sounded like the mewing of a cub(幼兽).‎ This unbelievable story shows that, contrary to certain popular knowledge of wild animals as threats who must be removed to make way for human advancement, we have much more in common with non-human animals and are a lot more dependent on them than we realize. They, too, are capable of showing pity. They, too, have been known to step in and save those weaker than themselves at the most unexpected times, and in ways that humans often fail to predict. They, too, deserve to live out their lives on their own terms.‎ ‎24. Which of the following statements is true?‎ A. Wild animals are often regarded as threats.‎ B. Wild animals often save humans for they’re weaker.‎ C. The little girl was forced to marry the kidnapper.‎ D. The lion gave the girl to the police as a gift. ‎ ‎25. The twelve-year-old girl was saved mainly because ________.‎ A. the lions frightened the kidnappers away ‎ B. she frightened the kidnappers away with her cries C. the police caught the kidnappers D. the kidnappers freed her halfway ‎26. We can conclude from the last paragraph that ________.‎ ‎ A.it is wise for wild animals to be friendly to humans ‎ B. humans sometimes gain reward from wild animals ‎ C. humans know wild animals can sometimes save them in need ‎ ‎ D. wild animals deserve a place on the earth C In the past year I lost two of the people I loved most. One was my little sister, the other a best friend of 30 years. I miss them. They are still in my heart, and there they’ll remain.‎ Sadly, when I moved to another city 8 years ago, I didn’t get to see them as much as I wanted to. Something always seemed to get in my way --- work, my dogs and, yes, the money to fly up for regular visits.‎ I was too late to whisper in their ears what they meant to me and to thank them for ‎ the joy they had given me. And this is something I regret. But instead of blindly blaming myself, I’d rather learn from this hardest of lessons.‎ I’ve resolved to put those I love before everything from now on --- to make keeping in touch a priority (优先) and to enjoy time with them while they are here.‎ In fact, I have decided I am going to take something positive from their loss and enjoy everything more. To not put anything off I can do straight away. To enjoy everything I own. Why? It’s as John Lennon said, “life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”‎ After the funerals (葬礼) of my darlings, I watched as their families dealt with what to do with their possessions. It reminded me of sorting out my mother’s things after her death and the sadness that brought me.‎ I’ve given up trying to “get ahead” in life; now my priority is myself and the people and things that make me happy.‎ And so, this week I will go to Italy to watch my favorite show --- a joyous event that I won’t be able to enjoy “some day in the future”. And all those pretty dresses I don’t wear because they cost too much to clean will be worn.‎ And I am going to remind those I love that this is the case, not just in writing but face to face and as often as I can. Because leaving anything for later is taking the risk that later may never arrive.‎ ‎27. How did the author feel when those she loved passed away?‎ ‎ A. Fearful B.Regretful C. Puzzled D. Hopeless ‎28. What lesson did the author learn from the death of her loved ones?‎ ‎ A. Life is too short. B. It is painful to lose those we love.‎ ‎ C. We should value the moment with loved ones.‎ ‎ D. We should be prepared for something bad in life.‎ ‎29. What does the underlined word “resolved” probably mean?‎ ‎ A. planned B. decided C. expected D. agreed ‎ ‎30. What can we learn about the author from the article?‎ ‎ A. She finds it difficult to make a living. B. She doesn’t have many good friends.‎ C. She can deal with bad things positively.‎ D. She always cares about her family and friends.‎ 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)‎ 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。‎ It's important to learn how we can protect the environment.
