Scientific studies from all over the world show that a diet high in animal foods such as pork, beef, including sugar, white flour, white noodles and even white rice, undermines one’s health.Deposits of animal fat cling to the walls of arteries(动脉), blocking the blood supply to various organs. This causes diseases in almost every organ, but in particular it damages two of the most vital ones, the heart and brain. Compare these problems with the excellent health one may enjoy if one consumes good Chinese food. The cook goes out every day, procures greattasting, fresh vegetables, then cooks them for just a few minutes so that their nutritional value is preserved and afterwards serves them in a most artistic and elegant fashion. Please cling to your traditional ways of eating. They are far superior to those of the West. Certainly the fast food chains make lots of money, but who wants to fill the pockets of a foreign food chain that proceeds to ruin the health of the Chinese people? Another reason Western fast food restaurants make money is that the food they serve, which comes from assembly lines, will not attract bugs or spoil easily. How the Chinese could patronize these fast food places when Chinese cook such delectable food, not just in this country but over the entire world, is beyond my comprehension. Western restaurants are clean and tastefully decorated. Moreover, these restaurants also do indeed have“good service and an inviting dining atmosphere”.However, Chinese food chains could do likewise if they would organize themselves as the Western chains do. These lessons in management and decoration are the only ones worth learning from the invasion of this country by the Western fast food chains. In other words only imitate the style of the restaurants, not the content of the food or the menus in any way, shape or form. Do not let the desire for money destroy the wonderful tradition that China has established in producing absolutely fantastically tasty as well as healthful food. 1. The following are fast food chains from the West except . A. McDonald’s B. Kentucky Fried Chicken C. Pizza Hut D. Chinese food 2. A diet high in animal foods and refined foods will cause diseases, particularly damage . A. the heart and brain B. the walls of arteries C. all organs D. the blood 3. The underlined word“undermines”in the second paragraph may have the similar meaning with“ ” . A. improves B. damages - 15 - C. affects D. strengthen 4. What will be worth learning from the Western fast food chains? A. The content of the food. B. The menus. C. The lessons in management and decoration. D. Shape or form of the food. 5. In the passage, the author thinks . A. Chinese should learn everything from Western fast food restaurants B. Chinese should say no to Western fast food C. Western fast food restaurants offer healthy diets D. Chinese food don’t contain enough nutrition Ⅵ. Dear Editor, One day I went to the market and found many 1. beautiful birds on cages for sale. It says if they must drink, they should not do so in the first three months and should limit to one or two ounces once or twice a week afterwards. It replaces previous guidance of saying small daily amounts were fine. NICE decided to tighten its guidance partly because of the concern that people are now drinking more than in the past. Previous draft guidance suggested women should drink an ounce of alcohol a day once they were past the first three months of pregnancy. The Department of Health in - 15 - England changed its guidance last year, calling for no drinking while pregnant or while trying to get pregnant. Drinking heavily in pregnancy can cause fetal alcohol syndrome (胎儿酒精综合症), which can leave children with features like small heads, widely spaced eyes and behaviour or learning problems. The experts said there was no evidence that several ounces once or twice a week would do any harm to the baby but could not categorically rule out (排除) any risk. National Childbirth Trust agreed women should limit their drinking during pregnancy. “Pregnant women who have had a few drinks often worry a great deal about whether they have harmed their baby. In general, it is believed that if a light infrequent drinker, in good health, drinks to the point of drunkenness on one occasion, the risk to her baby is small.” NICE also made a number of other recommendations for the care of women in the UK who were pregnant or planning to get pregnant. It said vitamin D and folic acid (叶酸) supplements should be offered by health staff to help avoid conditions such as rickets (软骨病) and spina bifida (脊椎裂). Officials also called for local health officials to ensure equal support plans where mothers encourage new parents to breastfeed are set up. NICE also called for improvements in the care of pregnant women with diabetes. About 20,000 pregnancies each year are affected by diabetes and, therefore, carry higher risk of miscarriage (流产) and still birth. The guidance said women should get access to advice and support, in particular to achieve good blood sugar control before they get pregnant. 1. What is the advice made by the Department of Health on drinking alcohol during pregnancy? A. Little in the first three months and a gradual increase afterwards. B. An ounce a day after the first three months. C. No drinking for pregnant women. D. Those who drink regularly need not worry about the harm to their babies. 2. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “categorically” in the third paragraph? A. Honestly.B. Absolutely. C. Physically.D. Doubtfully. 3. According to the passage, miscarriage is caused most probably by . A. the lack of vitamin D and folic acid B. rickets and spina bifida C. the lack of doctors’ advice and support D. diabetes by pregnant women 4. National Childbirth Trust found that . A. a pregnant woman drinking alcohol infrequently has little risk to her baby B. pregnant women who drink a little occasionally are always afraid of the effects C. there is no evidence that a pregnant woman drinking alcohol might harm her baby D. getting drunk once won’t harm the baby 5. In this passage, the author mainly intends to . A. show NICE’s new guidance on pregnant women’s alcohol drinking and its advice for the care of pregnant women B. warn pregnant women against any alcohol during pregnancy C. show the present situation of pregnant women’s drinking limit D. call for more care for pregnant women in society - 15 - Ⅵ. It was three o’clock in the morning, while suddenly 1. the phone rang. The neighbour dragged him from his bed and 8. sleepily answered the phone.“Listen, you,” shouted 9. Mr Petric,“And I don’t even own a dog!” 10. - 15 - 5. 解析:选D。a variety of 各种各样的; species前面不能加a;group表示“组;群”;amount表示“量”。 Ⅳ. 解析:选A。由“...he waited for Miss White to enter the classroom”可知,Steve等着老师进教室,最后老师走进来了。pass by 从旁边经过; look out小心; move out搬出去,均不符合语境。 2. 3. 解析:选C。联系空后的“and was the first to hand in his paper”我们知道,Steve迅速把试卷做完。 look through浏览;检查; glance through 扫一眼; go through经历。 4. 6. 解析:选A。联系前文的God, she was beautiful! 7. 解析:选B。联系下文“She glanced up at Steve, then down, then up”可知,她不住地打量Steve,因此对这个平时学习不好的学生现在的变化她感到非常吃惊。 8. 11. 解析:选A。 12. 解析:选A。联系后文“He discovered that he could understand and get 13, and that he could - 15 - translate the things he learned into his own life”可知,此时他知道自己能学习了。 13. 解析:选C。联系空后的“the things he learned”及全文语境可知,应为knowledge。 14. 解析:选B。this course这个进程,指Steve began to excel(优秀)。 15. 解析:选D。由后文的“During his Naval career, he 17 many young people, who without him, might not have believed in themselves”可知,他有一个成功的军旅生涯。 16. 解析:选B。联系空前的“he met the love of his life”我们知道,他结了婚,有了自己的家庭并且需要养活。 17. 解析:选A。联系下文“he continues to inspire others”可知,他继续激励着他人。 18. 解析:选C。联系前文的“and he had a(n) 15 military career”及下文的“...,as an adjunct professor...College”可知,他现在开始了第二个职业生涯。 19. 20. 解析:选A。联系空后的“all because of one teacher, who cared”可知,改变一个人的生活是很简单的,仅仅是一个微笑。 Ⅴ. 题干考查the Department of Health关于孕妇喝酒的建议,由文中第二段“The Department of Health in England changed its guidance last year, calling for no drinking while pregnant or while trying to get pregnant”可以看出,该机构现在呼吁孕妇在怀孕期间不要喝酒,因此C项正确。 2. “The experts said there was no evidence that several ounces once or twice a week would do any harm to the baby but could not categorically rule out any risk”的句意为:专家认为没有证据表明一周内喝一次或两次几盎司的酒就会对胎儿造成伤害,但是不能绝对(categorically)排除任何危险。 根据文章第五段的“About 20,000 pregnancies each year are affected by diabetes and, therefore, carry higher risk of miscarriage and still birth”可以看出,患有糖尿病的孕妇有着很高的流产风险,所以应该选D。 4. 文中的第四段是National Childbirth Trust的发现,根据“... agreed women should limit their drinking during pregnancy. ‘Pregnant women who have had a few drinks often worry a great deal about whether they have harmed their baby’”可以看出,即使喝酒不多的孕妇也会很担心喝酒会对胎儿不利,所以B项正确。A项是不完整的,文中说“In general, it is believed that if a light infrequent drinker, in good health, drinks to the point of drunkenness on one occasion, the risk to her baby is small”,可知对胎儿造成比较微小的危险的孕妇有以下特征:light, infrequent drinker, in good health, on one occasion,而此选项只是断章取义,所以错误,同样,D项也由此判断为错误选项。 5. 解析:选A。 Ⅵ. 短文改错 1. while→ when 2. of 后加his/the 3. answered后加it - 15 - 4. such→ so 5. Unless→ If 或去掉don’t 6. a → the 7. called后加his 8. him → himself 9. √ 10. 去掉And - 15 - - 15 - w.w.w.k.s.5.u.c.o.m www.ks5u.com - 15 -查看更多
